Extinction Rebellion’s co-founder Clare Farrell and conservation scientist Dr Charlie Gardner team up once more to discuss issues and stories they feel are not getting enough airtime. They want to make sure that the latest news in science and important reports that are relevant to the climate and ecological crisis are flagged and explained in ways that are easy to understand.
EPISODE 7: COP28: What happened!?
This time, Clare and Charlie break down what happened at this year's COP28 in Dubai and where it leaves us now.

Your conclusion ''might not be the words people want to hear...'' but that is the situation we are in and at least people like yourselves are drawing attention to these issues and demanding that States and corporations (and obviously individuals also) make changes. Keep up the great work.

I think that most individuals who would make changes have already done so.

Convincing people is a bit of a mum's game. Maybe it's worth your time, maybe not, but what you should focus on instead is telling the truth. Tell people's moral duties in this time of crisis and you will see a few brave people standing up for what's right. Tell the truth, the rest will follow.

In summary it was a con trick. It gave the impression something constructive happened when it was just pretence. A call to transition away from fossil fuels is not consistent with plans to quadruple oil usage as the UAE let slip, or the huge number of UK oil and gas permits. Having said that a lot of marvellous people had to fight hard to get the words fossil fuels included and to rubbish the whole thing is a betrayal of their efforts. As long as the ff companies control the process there is no prospect of a solution. They want their income stream to continue and if many have to die as a result that’s fine with them. Somehow lobbyists have to be excluded from COP for there to be any chance of progress. Thanks Charlie and Clare for a good summary and interesting though depressing discussion.

£700,000,000 yep, pitiful. Thanks for this. So interesting and informative from Charlie and great insight and analysis from Clare. A bit more presenter interruption from Clare please, to provide breaks, without distracting from Charles's information input. I have had criticism from saying that the cop text, transition to fossil fuels, provides a very thin gap for future leverage. Interesting to know what pushed them to add FF with such heavy resistance to acknowledge the causes of GW. The USA? COP would seem to be the only arena for this debate or global policy, as such it does focus attention for 2 weeks a year and you never know, some day, soon hopefully, the majority will wake up to the danger. Sometimes change comes quickly. In that case, at least there is a forum.

It feels that all of these conferences sole purpose to politicians has been to muffle the voices of the honest researches and find some that are willing to spread muffled versions of facts. Somehow though the need to put rich countries to pay is bit too simple and needs closer look too. There are poor people in all countries and somehow it's never the rich that pay their messes but always the poorest in every country. So how to make the real culprits to pay? In most rich countries there's a massive wave going on of taking benefits from poorest people, weakening the education system and healthcare. I wonder, if these are connected. Rich get richer but still countries seem to go to a saving mode and more and more restrictive ones at the same time climate crises is worsening. Countries don't decrease subsidies to fossil fuels and animal agriculture but from wealth fear state. Ignorant and financially threatened people struggling in their everyday lives don't care about environment and to feel some empowerment many turn to seek it from fascism.

25:37 As with everything else, the language and the intention is there in the text, but it does not translate into accountable obligations. Maybe that is enough for courts to enforce it some day. Meanwhile we'll have to press our governments harder to do what is right. Keep the good work!

20:15 that's basically it. we've been appealing to the morality of corporations and governments that evidently have none. they have no conscience nor incentive to even formulate one, due to the profit motive.

You may be tempted to dismiss the whole affair as hypocrisy because you're currently run by the tories. With a leftist coalition in power in Spain competing for the interest of their voters, I see more reasons for optimism. E.g. the Spanish environment minister and chief negotiator on behalf of the EU at COP28 Ms. Ribera has recently opened the debate about degrowth here.

"the negotiations are COP aren't climate action, they're agreements to take actions". that's it right there, the ethos of it all. arguing over semantics that aren't going to be implemented anyways.
