In this rare, extended interview with one of our most gifted actors, Al Pacino sat down with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz to discuss his methods and his training at the Actors Studio, and talked about how the New York-based actors community not only shaped his craft but also revolutionized the profession, on both stage and screen. Thanks to the Actors Studio West in Los Angeles.

This might sound kinda depressing, but I can't imagine myself in a world without Al Pacino. I mean he isn't just my favorite actor in the world, he has been a constant presence (in the movies of course) throughout my entire life. Thanks for everything Mr. Pacino, sir. You truly are the greatest of all time.

No, it doesn’t sound depressing. Al Pacino has been a Master of delving into the heart of what moves human beings at their primal core. Thru him, we can feel our own true selves more deeply, and recognize that in others.

My dad worked for Paramount Pictures and he told me a story of when he met Al Pacino. Al Pacino looked out for my dad. Not only that, my dad was invited by him for a Serpico anniversary and Al Pacino treated my dad like a good friend just in the first day of meeting him. A few years later Al bumped into my dad again in the studio and gave him a hug and invited him to lunch, with the condition that my dad would eat vegetables which is an inside joke between them. So not only did Al Pacino remembered my dad he gave him a hug. So whenever people ask me or my dad who the nicest guy in Hollywood is we always say Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino.

Major kudos to Ben Mankiewicz for asking the right questions.....and for having a conversation. There is no interview with Pacino like this one, and I'm REALLY grateful it exists. (Colbert did a similarly great - albeit shorter - one with Duvall in the recent past). I'd love to see the full version of the Ellen Burstyn interview as well. What a shame we'll never get such similar interviews with Jack Nicholson or Gene Hackman. Great job to everyone who worked on this piece, especially Ben Mankiewicz. That was a free flowing conversation.

Pacino discusses the power of Brando's scene during the card game and how deeply the viewer feels his character's emotion. That kind of moment, for me, was in Godfather II when Michael Corleone shuts the door in Kay's face. It still gives me shivers - they way he looks her up and down - BRRRR!

This was riveting - I could watch him have these conversations every week - this is what we're here for - an ideal interview should in some way unlock the subject - someone like Pacino has devoted his whole life to this subject, and he's one of the top experts, and it's why we watch him, so why not just give him space, like this, to expound on his passion? Why do interviewers so often spend their time interrupting and "herding" someone like this into their own imposed narrative, instead of just giving him free rein to talk? Do the journalists really think we'd rather hear some tabloid gossip instead? This video is what it looks like when the interviewer does his job properly - sadly rare, but so refreshing

I love Al. He’s one of the greatest screen actors ever. But, classic actor, he really can’t explain/intellectualize acting or his process. He’s not objective or literate enough for that. That’s part of why he’s so great. His form of expression is being IN it not taking about it. Have seen many interviews with him and they’re largely like this.
@phoneking1
@phoneking1 Жыл бұрын
Yours is a very astute, accurate comment, which nobody else picked up on. You can see Ben Mankiewicz - who is an EXCELLENT interviewer - trying to repeatedly wring out of Pacino specifically what his method is, or what he learned from the school, yet, Al can't articulate it. And your observation is correct. He is indeed so immersed in it that he has a tough time explaining the nuances of his craft. I also know that many actors HATE talking about their processes, because the average Joe doesn't give a hoot, and probably won't understand what they're saying anyway. So they tend to over-generalize when speaking about craft. A brilliant actor usually does not a teacher make. And vice versa. However... There are exceptions. The fabulous Michael Caine did a video for actors called "Acting in Film", which should be considered the bible for film actors. In it, he breaks the entire process down to an incredibly intricate degree, from timing, hitting one's marks correctly, the value of being still, etc. There was a documentary made years ago with Marlon Brando, who served as an acting coach, along with Leonardo DiCaprio and a few other big names. They literally picked random people up off the street - including a homeless person - and held a master acting class for several days. The premise of the project was to prove that almost anyone can be an actor. And I believe this is true. We are ALL born as actors, and we grow up pretending all of the time: playing house, cowboys & indians, bank robbers, etc. This is our fertile imagination, which is a gift. But we lose it over time as we're taught to fit into society and conform. We're also told we have to "grow up" at a certain point. A true actor/artist never loses the childlike sense of play. Sadly, this documentary - which was called "Lying for a Living" -never saw the light of day, as too many egos we're involved and a bunch of legal crap transpired. I believe the footage sits in a vault somewhere to this day. Another great read on the acting process is "True & False" by David Mamet, which is a book that ALL actors should read many times over.

PS: I could have listened to him talk about "American Buffalo" all day long. What a shame there is no film record of either him or Robert Duvall playing Teach in that play. (Ditto "Hurlyburly" a few years later with William Hurt, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Sigourney Weaver, Jerry Stiller, Cynthia Nixon and Judith Ivey. How's that for a cast?) I know when Duvall did it, Kenneth McMillan played Donnie (great casting choice) and John Savage played Bobby (also great casting choice). Don't know who did those parts when Pacino did the play.
