Day in Chinatown Series continues! Every episode we feature a main course, dessert, and snacks to go because you can't leave NYC Chinatown empty handed :)! Today's main course we visit Taiwan Bear House, one of the most authentic restaurants serving Taiwanese snacks including crispy popcorn chicken, pork chop, and more! This is my favorite place to get a Taiwanese food bento to go!
Next we try Pink Lady Cheesetart for fluffy cheese tart with Asian flavors like ube, sesame, matcha and more! We also headed to one of the oldest bakery in Chinatown to grab traditional desserts like hopia and mooncakes :). Finally, we HAD to get dumplings to go, it's $15 for 50 frozen chive and pork dumplings - can't beat the price! So cheap for all that food!

Dumpling skirt recipe: Tsp cornstarch 1/2 tsp flour 1/2 cup of water Any vinegar - this helps make it extra crispy :) These dumplings I got were extraaaa thick and big so I added a bit more water and left the lid on longer so it will cook it thoroughly. Don't keep lifting the lid, once you put it on, leave it on there so it can properly cook! If you have a thinner, flatter dumplings, those will cook faster :)! Be sure to stir the flurry before pouring it onto the dumpling so there's no clumps of flour. My first dumping skirt was just one flat crispy pancake so don't worry if yours turned out that way too! The trick is to let the water evaporate and to properly mix in your cornstarch & flour. You can also just do cornstarch + water, the combination of everything above just helps make it extra crispy :) Dumpling sauce recipe: Mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar + water, minced garlic and scallions. Adjust accordingly! Make sure your sugar dissolves with the water! This sugar water is what will help balance the soy sauce and rice vinegar :) Most Chinatown dumpling restaurants will have frozen dumplings to go! This was definitely one of the best deals $15 for 50 😳!!

Also, moon cakes would make a great appetizer at a dinner because they are so dense. Cut them in small pieces and allow the guests to get just a taste of them.

I'm from metro Vancouver and we have a plethora of Asian restaurants and Asian grocery stores. Even though dine-in is closed right now take out is available . I make note of what you critique and find a place that seems close. My kids love our local cutlet house. We buy dumplings from one of our local Asian groceries and now I'm going to try your skirt recipe.

Hi everyone, check the spots you want to go to ahead time and check that they're open. I went today (Wednesday) and both PinkLady Tarts and Golden Fung were closed. It's the one day a week they close. But I just explored other spots, so many great eats.

My best friend is Chinese and Filipino and introduced me to hopia way back. Black bean hopia goes exceptionally well with coffee, the sweetness of the bean suits the bitter flavor of coffee.

Ummmm...that cheese tart looked delish! And i love that they saw a gap in the market and filled it during a pandemic! We had that happen in Amsterdam where bubble tea shops popped up all over the city. It was an unexpected and fantastic occurrence and now we drink far too much bubble tea 😂
