For only $30, I buy some high voltage Chinese circuity that produces a deadly gas from thin air. I do my best to put it together and see if it actually works.

- Make sure that your holding-tongs don't touch the metal parts. They may look isolated because of the red rubber, but you don't know how much voltage the coating can withstand or if it is broken. If they get contact they electrify your whole setup and maybe even your table if it is metal. - Also don't expect your rubber gloves to safe you from kilovolts. - Wear shoes with thick rubber soles. - Better google high-voltage safety and don't read what anyone writes in the comments. xD

Thanks for the thoughts! The rubber gloves are there to protect me from the iodine... I didn't expect them to protect me from the high voltage (be nice if they did but that's living in a fantasy yeah). Good thought about the stand. I'll try to construct a better holder out of it from the wood block it was on. The table is also wood too, but still, i'll keep the metal stand away for sure

As the transformer is not grounded and not polarized, in theory it should be non-referenced to earth and fully isolated, so touching only one wire shouldn't make any difference. Although I personally wouldn't trust that transformer, because a small internal isolation fault would make it unsafe, while still working fine.

If you let an Arc burn in a pickle jar and put air through and bubble that stuff through some water you can generate some nitric acid! Just need to use a flyback and a ZVS driver, power it with a solar panel and charge a battery for night: get nitric for virtually free! Not verry efficient but its possible. But if you have a Nitrogen and Oxygen Cylinder and put that stuff in the jar it is actually not that bad! Just need to recycle the gasses.

2:40 You could add an earth wire yourself if some of the outside of the generator is made of metal. Just take a plug with an earth wire and connect it to every metal part you can, probably one connection to the main body of the apparatus and one connection to the tube would be required. Then use a voltmeter to check that you get close to zero resistance between any of the metal parts you've grounded and the earth prong of your plug.

Yeah, while some devices work off harsh UV, this one works on corona discharge. Its just very high voltage applied across a non-conduction medium, so it could even be an opaque floor tile and it would probably work ok. Using a cable with a ground wire could make this device safer. The ground wire should be connected to the metal cylinder. The secondary winding (the high voltage output) of the transformer *should* be electrically isolated from both the live and neutral (brown and blue). If the insulation in the transformer fails then there is the possibility of the metal enclosure becoming 240v with respect to the ground you are standing on. The ground wire is designed to shunt any stray voltage/current on the enclosure of the device to ground under a fault condition. Its also probably worth checking if your house has a RCD breaker that can cut off the power to the circurt very fast in the event of a ground fault. You will still need to be very careful with the non grounded high voltage wire. Love your channel by the way. Good luck and be safe!

Putting a ground connection on the cylinder might be a bad idea. Depending on how the "transformer" works it could lead to high frequency leakage on to the ground network with potentially bad consequences to electronics plugged into the same net. And an RCD would not protect against that. A better idea in my opinion would be to install the whole setup (transformer and generator tube) into a metal box with all parts insulated from the box. And then ground the box.

Obviously if they were parallel then it would just make more ozone, but if you linked them up in series, so the output of one feeds into the input of the other, do you think the result would be any different?
@graealex
@graealex 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming he stops blowing into the tube and uses pure oxygen from a tank, there is enough free oxygen available for each stage to add to the total ozone output. And assuming the spec of 3g/h ozone output (1 liter of oxygen is about 1.5g, and a suitable flow rate might be 10 L/m) on the device is true, there is a lot of potential O2 left. Remember that plain air will allow NOx to form.

Actually, polarity does matter for this kind of shitty construction. The way it is meant to be setup is that the outside casing is connected to the neutral wire (which is supposed to be connected to earth at some point of an house's electical wiring). Appliances used to be designed this way a long time ago, but it isn't the case anymore for the obviouse reason that the chassis has a 50% chance of being connected to the live wire.

@John_2143
@John_2143 Жыл бұрын
i'm not an electrical engineer but polarity can matter in AC design. AC current is usually delivered using two wires: one neutral, at 0v, and one live, going from -V to +V. AC circuits therefore often have more protection around on side than the other. Things like extra grounding, physical disconnects, or fuses might only protect the live side. This is why many larger appliances have required polarity where as smaller, fully enclosed devices, do not. For example: vacuums, computers and heaters have required polarity. phone chargers and small dc power supplies do not.
@anon2479-rz3qp
@anon2479-rz3qp 9 ай бұрын
@@John_2143 neither vacuums nor heaters nor computers have required polarity. computers in theory is correct but you don't plug them in directly, they all run on DC generated from their Powersupply that is rectified long before it touches anything, same is true for approx. 99.999% of all devices you will ever have contact with. you literally picked out the exact devices that definitely never care about polarity, congrats. it may matter for things like audio equipment or semiconductors running directly on line AC - which is incredibly rare, borderline non-existent. maybe don't talk about stuff you don't know about.

Europe may be different but how do you get 240v from two wires (single phase) is that what the electrical utility provides at the meter and standard in the home? We have 120v per phase one secondary service lead on each bus red and black supply and a white neutral as the alternate return then a ground wire to keep a guy from getting dead!
@voidedspace5510
@voidedspace5510 5 жыл бұрын
So the phases are 120v away from the neutral tap of the transformer. But since the phases are across from one another and the same potential apart from the neutral, the phases are 240v phases apart. Imagine monkey in the middle with neutral as the middle most person. The distance between the neutral and one of the players is 120 feet but from player to player is 240 feet apart.
@TheNini666
@TheNini666 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite. 120V or 230/240V is the RMS (root mean square) from 340V peak to peak (-170 to 170V) and 650V peak to peak (~ -320 to 320V) respectively. Peak to peak means "away from each other" or maximum difference and half of it is the neutral wire. So 320V is the maximum of the first half of the sine wave. Then it falls down, passing through 0V neutral (where we are looking from), until it reaches -320V (minimum of the sine wave). RMS: -320 to 320V sine wave AC puts out the equal amount of energy compared to 230V DC. You are welcome to ask for more information.

Polarity on AC😂
@MrGoatflakes
@MrGoatflakes 4 жыл бұрын
AC weirdly does have a polarity. A line which is connected to the power station and one that isn't. The one that is is called active, the other neutral. Because it isn't really a "circuit" exactly, that's just lies we tell children. Instead it's charged particles moving back and forth (a current) in response to a potential difference (a voltage). It's actually important to put any fuses on the active side so you are positively disconnected from the power source. While it is true that cutting either will stop the normal operation of the equipment, if you don't put it on the active side wires will still be at line voltage, and in a fault condition that might mean you could be connected to it to, and you might be able to sustain a lethal current between it, you, and earth or anything else at a different voltage...

You do know how toxic ozone is? not a good idea to suck. I wonder if you would be so keen to blow into the apparatus if it was generating hydrogen cyanide, strange really as ozone has an LD50 7 to 10 times lower than HCN. Don't think it's a good idea to use wet air, such as in breath, depending on the method of ozone generation. If it's silent discharge it is not a good idea to have water in the discharge tube. I use a cheap fish tank air pump with a one way valve fitted to stop the ozone attacking the pump diaphragm and a dreschel flask to stop reactant leaking back into the generator. Ozone is used to sterilise pond water, it is possible to buy blue coloured ozone resistant plastic pipe for such applications. I assume you are going to investigate the unstable ozonides. Some are reported to be highly unstable powerful explosives. (FYI, new anti terrorist legislation currently going through the UK parliament may make simply viewing youtube sites such as yours illegal in the UK.)
@AmorDeae
@AmorDeae 5 жыл бұрын
You seem to know what you're talking about. Oh wait, you don't measure lethality of gasses in LD, it's LC. LC lo as of Wikipedia data is not 7-10 times more, it's 2 times, and time required to killfor Ozone is 3h, and 1/2 the concentration of HCN needs 10min. Nice comparison there. "Some are reported to be highly unstable powerful explosives" If you have a problem with that, this is not the channel for you. This guy usually -knows- has an idea what he's doing and talking about. Edit: Not saying you're not right, I just really did like exeggerating numbers for unknown to man reasons.
@nigeljohnson9820
@nigeljohnson9820 5 жыл бұрын
@@AmorDeae the error is because I am more use to using ozone in solution where LD50 is the measure. Hydrogen cyanide and ozone kill in different ways, so a direct comparison is difficult, as in higher concentrations HCN is likely to kill more quickly. Finding data is further complicated by the fact that ozone has never been considered to be a weapon of war. HCN gas is used in the US for executions, so this was used for dramatic effect, a better choice might have been phosgene. The UK TLV ( threshold limit value) for ozone is 0.1 ppm, that for HCN is 10'ppm, which gives some indication to its long term toxicity. The LC50 for NTP HCN is 100 to 300 ppm that for ozone under the same conditions is 12.6 ppm tested on mice. It is difficult making such comparisons because they are species dependent and direct tests on humans are generally frowned upon. It is generally accepted that ozone is significantly more toxic than cyanide at its lowest concentrations.
