I hated our fake wood-toned Ikea Kallax so much and now I don't hate it anymore.
Watch the video to learn stuff. Like how to paint IKEA laminate furniture without sanding, and how to get the look of cane (rattan or whatever) at a fraction of the cost.

I have been stretching fabric for years. A small tip is to dampen the burlap with a spray bottle. Keep watch on your warp and weft and don't over stretch, just a slight amount of tension before you staple. This way, you have a taught drumlike finish to the burlap, when dry. A tiny amount of wood glue or even Elmers, on the inside edge is also a good idea. This is so great, and love the "feet", they really do lighten it. HD would also cut you a "Luan" backer board. 1/2" smaller than the actual dimension of the back so you have 1/4" shy, all the way around. 😍

Oh please, circular saws are cheap as heck and even a brand new table saw is only going to be like $600-1000. And that's *new*, you don't have to get it new. It's silly to act like owning a tool is some big sin. Go on your local resale pages and you'll see how easy it is to pick stuff up for cheap.

@@PoshPennieshi Vivien, I can give you one hint for the doors. If you get wallpaper glue and soak the burlap in it after drying it will be like hard panel. It will not be a flimsy fabric. We used to make chandeliers with rope ,beach ball ,and wallpaper glue. When it dries we deflate the ball and cut with scissors the shape of the chandelier the way we like it.

Instead of having the doors fold down and combined, you could have placed small hinges between the two doors in place of the brackets to create a folding door while still using the magnets but it would allow the doors to open to the side and improve efficiency and usability.

The bottom hinge was ingenious since you didn’t want to start over. For me, however, it would be a pain to deal with. Thanks for sharing. If I try this, I will take the lesson you learned and will hopefully be able to get the hinges installed on the side, not bottom. Came out great! 👏

Did you wet the burlap/hessian after you attached it to the doors? That will shrink and tighten the fabric. Wetting it with a very thin flour and water mix will make it stiffer too, and more like the cane you wanted. This is how my ancestors made the walls of the house I grew up in in the 1860s. (The house not me 😵‍💫). Hessian nailed to the timber frame, wet to shrink and tighten it, then newspapers pasted on with flour and water glue until the wall was stiff enough, then pasted over with ‘proper’ wallpaper. The ‘walls’, and possibly the wallpaper had been there for at least 50 years when I was there in the 1950s. The lower section, to chair height were timber, but the upper walls and ceiling were all wallpaper over hessian.

That's an EXCELLENT problem-solve for this item! Very elegant, too! I was holding off on doing this project because I feared someone accidentally dropping something onto the burlap, but the folding solution fixes that. Thank you so much! *And thanks to Vivien for such a great video!!! 🥰 I'll def use wood glue for the joins and screws, and sand/fill my assembled 1x2's before painting, so the finish is real clean. The pedestal feet are GENIUS, by the way. I'm sick to DEATH of our Kallax unit and am excited to do something cool with it. Thanks again!

It's a great makeover and creatively executed. But I think you will want to change the door situation at some point - doesn't seem very practical to open down because they are tall doors. You can't step up to it with the door open, you have to reach from the side.
