I drove an aircraft carrier for close to three years. There's no situation in which you could be angled into the Island. The goal was to always have 30+ knots directly over the bow of the ship. Even if winds were variable, you would be angled to the port side of the ship away from the island. There's a pad below the LSO platform in which the paddles (LSO's) can jump down into if a planes crashes, comes in too low, or catches fire on deck. I've even driven the carrier during Case III recoveries during "Bluewater Ops" with aircraft around the boat who were assigned to ditch if they couldn't tank on their next attempt with the S-3 or F-18 Rhino at, or below, "joker fuel" levels . We would drive the ship around tropical storms. I have even been on watch when were recovering aircraft with water spouts (tornadoes over the ocean) sailing in between the squalls. There were two instances in which all our airborne aircraft from 3 recoveries were diverted to Prince Sultan Airbase and King Fahd Airbase after conducting bombing in Iraq after massive dust storms in the Persian Gulf. The had to split aircraft between both bases because two other aircraft carriers were diverting theur aircraft as well. The most dangerous weather conditions to recover aircraft occur in the North Atlantic or the Bering Sea during storm forces gales. It was so dangerous, that nowadays the US Navy rarely, if ever, performs "Blue Nose" operations north of the Arctic Circle. It was necessary to counter the Soviet threat during the Cold War.

I was today years old when I learned that the F/A-18C Lot 20 has a VSTOL capability.

This is all quite comical because in such insane winds a carrier would need to be pointed straight into the wind as that much air hitting it broadside would cause it to capsize with all that sail area on the sides!!!

The guy side slipping at 55:00 didn't even attempt to kick the rudder back to straighten the nose. Had he grabbed that wire it probably would have wrecked him. Solid attempt at crabbing though, made it look easy.

I have a stupid idea for a race. First one to do 10 laps of the racing oval in Vegas wins, but mass start on some airfield somewhere else in Nevada. Fly to the race track, land on it, then do 10 laps. I'm sure there is no potential for horrible accidents :P

Shows you how good real navy pilots are. These guys are playing a game and holding their breath. Imagine doing this in windy conditions at night and failing only means your death and maybe others onboard the ship.

I remember playing FSX carrier practice years ago. Y'all make it look easy ! I was on the USS Abraham Lincoln in Desert Storm. I know for a fact It ain't easy to land on a carrier. Even in a flight sim ! Target wire is the 3 wire If I remember is correct. Loved the vid ! Thanks for bringing it to us.

See I noticed Mungo is a good pilot , obviously a none Navy type . His got both hands on the controls , unlike the Navy guys . Navy guys one hand scratching the crabs the other holding their drink and steering the plane with their knees !!! And no doubt at some point putting on their lipstick in the rear view mirror !!! . And this carrier hasn't even crossed the equator yet lol .

Im making notes , it all helps . Now not only do I have to HIV and drunk but a cross dresser re-enacting Marilyn Monroe !!!! . In the Navy !!! you can feel the wind around your pants , in the Navy in the Navy :-) . The RAF advert " you dont need to be a pilot in the RAF to fly " I like to add to that " but it helps " .

Crazy idea but DCS needs a campaign on the scale of Ace Combat, only with its trademark hyperrealistic simulation.

The US Navy can land one aircraft on their carrier decks every 37 seconds during daylight and can land one a minute at night, but as shown in this video, the Navy could step up their game cuz like 5 jets were landing on the carrier deck every second and landing 100 in 1 minute, just imaging the horror the enemy Navy must be going through once they see that happening lol. You see this guy should be in charge of who’s landing and who’s taking off on a carrier
