I actually just posted about this!! In the old days, folks used to avergagely own the max of 3 outfits each!! They wore and rewore, and I'm sure they wished for variety, but it was sustainable all the same. There's time for variety of course, and if you have the resources it's really nice, BUT buying a few staple pieces that are durable can ensure that with wear and rewear, they LAST you. It can save money and reduce waste in the longrun. I prefer to spend more for a pair of jeans, that are thick and durable rather than spending less for pieces that will decline in durability more quickly and will need replacements more often.

Heyyy! Totally understand where you’re coming from but it depends on the type of thrift content creator you’re watching. To bring in income I also resell, so the clothes you see in my thrift hauls don’t stay very long in my possession unless I keep it. I mentioned it in my video too but I didn’t get rid of too much honestly and I also donate back to the thrift and unhoused shelters what I don’t think will sell on depop. So ultimately it’s being recycled back into someone else’s closet. I also live in an LA loft with very little closet space so I have to regularly clean out and filter what I don’t wear cause otherwise it takes over my space and can’t let the bunnies get near it otherwise I’ll literally have holes everywhere. As far as the mega consumption, I don’t think I bring in too much clothes. I literally go thrifting once a week and each haul video I show off around 8-10 pieces. I think it’s important to know what the person is doing at the end of the day with the clothes✨

I can only imagine how hard it must be to be a content creator, having everything you do picked apart by strangers that don’t know you or the context that your work/ videos play in your life. I agree that the key to this cycle of input vs. output is reselling. Sometimes it can be confusing as a viewer to see thrift hauls and purges from all your favorite thrift youtubers. It’s a loop you see on repeat here on YT - thrift haul, closet clean out, thrift my pinterest board, closet clean out, and so on. After seeing that over and over again, you wonder if it’s a bit wasteful/ wonder why thrift youtubers get rid of so many things that they (fairly recently) bought and were excited about. Most thrifters that watch these videos are hobbyists, not professionals, so we come at it from a different perspective, not planning to resell the stuff we buy. But I totally agree with your perspective - I think it’s actually a positive to thrift and resell since it helps take things off the racks (that may be destined for a landfill) and places those items into new homes. I’d love to see more conversations about this reseller vs. hobbyist distinction (and how it relates to sustainable consumption) from the thrift community that we’re a part of :) thanks again for your thoughtful response.

I totally agree but she is thrifting which isn’t a big deal to me. It’s mostly her money being “wasted” not new materials being used and stuff. Like she’s not creating demand for new stores 😊😊

@@twinelle such constant buying gives thrift stores motivation to raise prices which, in turn, makes purchasing clothes impossible for a part of the population, the most vulnerable part. The fact that you donate back doesn't change the prices in the stores, unfortunately. With a lot of thrifting content you can see the prices raising up and most vulnerable people being left out, the ones for whom second hand stores were set up in the first place. And they for sure can't afford Depop or whatnot either.

Hahaha I can see that but either way women are always gonna get unwanted male attention. But, in my case I always get more attention when wearing body hugging silhouettes than just lingerie camisoles. The silk/lace are just details that have no play in the silhouette. I feel comfortable wearing those as casual wear but anything that is bodycon or tight uh uh would not wear if I have to ride the bus alone😬 Hope this clairifies✨
