If you are new here, hey! I am Natalie - follower of Jesus, wife to my childhood best friend, and homeschool mama to three.
I’m also the ORIGINAL creator of “MESSY TO MINIMAL”- a widely-popular extreme decluttering and home organization series that I started in 2020. In the course of about a year, my husband and I worked to simplify our home and lifestyle. With our first pass through our home we got rid of over 80% of our possessions. Nowadays, we’re not keeping track of the number, because decluttering is more of a maintenance task to invest into the health and simplicity of our home and family life moving forward!
I continue to share this series as a way to completely DEMOLISH the idea that decluttering is a one and done activity (especially in a home with young children!) I am here to give you non-judgmental encouragement and some gentle motivation for your own decluttering and simple-living journey!

Sometimes I wish we lived on a planet where we all just wore zip up jumpsuits in different colours like in sci-fi movies so clothing isn't such a headache issue 😄😁

You’ve inspired me to refresh my small closet. I set aside off season clothing (mostly bulky coats during the summer) in two thin storage bags at the top of our reach-in closet. My husband and I each have about 4’ of width to store ALL our clothes and coats and shoes, no dressers/underbed bins/storage closets for more. We have 4 seasons and wide temperature swings are not uncommon (up to 80° last week and down to 15° this week) so keeping things minimal and at the ready works best for us. Part of my intentional living journey has led me to looking into what companies we support in a world that seems increasingly in opposition to our faith.

My solution to the seasonal bin, always keep out just two items (example - two short sleeve shirts for myself and each of my kids) from the last season. Then, whenever I need them in that transitional period - I have them handy. They just hang out at the back of the closet or bottom of the drawer but it work for us!

When we moved last year our closet size was cut in half. The best thing we did was to invest in a closet system that we installed ourselves which made it very affordable. Two rows of hanging each (3 1/2 feet long) plus we each have 4-5 drawers with shelves above for sweaters (2 feet wide) and 2 one foot wide sections for long hanging, double hanging or shelves for shoes. Top shelves are luggage and extra blankets. We fit so much into our closet and a few extra things that are not used often go in the long dresser that is in the bedroom. Of course the best thing we have done over the years is to go down to a minimal wardrobe. We wash a load on Monday and a load on Friday (no sorting and we could go longer if needed).

Love that you were decluttering as a team and that you both recognise old favourites that are no longer needed in your clothing inventory. Side note Blundstone boots (or Blun-ies as we call them in Australia) will only get more comfortable the more you wear them. They mold to your unique foot shape and are so durable and easy to slip on. Great boots.

I haven’t done a seasonal bin before. I will usually just put my in season clothes to the part of the closet or drawer that’s easiest to reach. It’s always worked really well for me! Love these videos and all the gentle motivation!🍁🧡

Natalie, when you switched from the bin to the drawers I, literally, cheered! 😂🎉 A couple of years ago, the LORD led me to do the same thing (the Holy Spirit is the most BRILLIANT decluttering Coach!! 🙌🙌), and it has been an absolute DREAM! For me, it is the perfect combination of having the unseasonal pieces not cluttering the visual of my closet whole still keeping them accessible...which is important, because I live in Kentucky where we can often go through all 4 seasons in one day. 😂 It's also great because I don't have to deal without the the physical hassle of a giant tub (SO much easier and enjoyable to just transfer from hangar to drawer) and also because the drawer becomes my container so that if it starts to feel crammed I know it's time to declutter. And, for all that, it still is this fun discovery every time I pull out the new season that feels like I'm "shopping my closet". So WIN, WIN, WIN!!! So excited for you to try it out, too! 😃🙌🙌🙌🙌💖

I just put away the really bulky winter coats and gloves, scarfs etc. in summer to keep the hallway simple. And I change seasons for my kids because I don’t want to argue with a 3yo why they cannot wear shorts in the middle of german winter or their wool sweater for going to the beach in summer.

Natalie, I love how intentional you are with your videos…including the background music. I found myself in tears while I was decluttering my closet because I’m having a difficult time knowing that my oldest child will be graduating from high school this year. I’m putting away clothes that he has outgrown (size men’s Medium) to save for my younger son. It’s just surreal. I know I have much more to declutter, so I’m grateful for your videos to guide and encourage me. Thank you, Natalie!!❤️

I live in the north so it gets real cold and I keep all seasons in my closet year around. I’ve found when I did use a season bin I forgot what I had and ended up spending money on doubles. I still do a capsule wardrobe and just put the “off season” things to one side of the closet. But whatever works for your brain is really what’s best. Some times you just have to adjust a bit.

I am the same way! I have to keep all seasons where I can see them because of weather extremes and I am lucky to have space in my closet to push my off-season clothing there but still have access to it. Otherwise I forget what I have and spend unnecessary money buying the same things!

I'm with you on the seasonal bin. I no longer do that either. The only separate clothing bin I have is for maternity clothes and then when I'm using it, I take things out of my closet that definitely will not work during pregnancy. I like being able to see everything I have and it makes taking things out of my collection very easy.

Same here! I used to have a seasonal bin, but I found the task of pulling it out and switching over so daunting. Also, the big bulky winter clothes didn't really fit in there. I, too, live somewhere with a wide range in temperature (15 °F - 100 °F) and my winter and summer wardrobe are completely different (except for bras and pantys, but I even use different socks). I moved several times during the last three years and didn't have furniture to store all my clothes. Now I have a dresser and a closet again. I keep the clothes in season in my dresser, the rest is neatly put away in drawers in my closet. Everything is easily accessible at all times. When seasons are changing, I gradually pull some pieces out. When they get washed, I already put them in my dresser. When the new season has completely arrived I switch over all the seasonal clothing. This task is easy because I use cardboard boxes as dividers in my dresser and my closet drawers - so I just switch out the boxes. No need to fold stuff or pull out bins from the top of my closet. It just takes a few minutes.

Northern Florida local now so I use most of my wardrobe around the year. But when I lived in Ohio most of my life, I did what I call the “prime real estate” method. The things that were off season would live in the back and bottom of my wall-in closets or the sides of my normal closets. Still able to get to but was not the things I saw when I would enter/open my closet to find an outfit. Out of immediate sight, but not out of reach. Also, when I had really small closets, I put fancy clothes on the edge of the front coat closet because those were my “need but only on a rare occasion” items+always needed a tall rack for them, so it worked out well. Now I actually wear my dresses more and do put all my coats/jackets in the coat closet because well….Florida: coats are my rare but on occasion items now lol. The cycles of life! Always love your stuff! Love seeing a Godly lady be genuine and real about things and just joyfully living. Your channel is always a calming outlet on a hectic day. Hope you are had a wonderful first week off and are enjoying the season!! (Send Florida some cool breezes, please!)

You won't believe it! I'm 41 years old and for 38 years I haven't felt cold! Only if it was a trip to some cold land. So during these 38 years I wore my summer clothes during autumn and winter, with the exception of some t-shirts, dresses... I always had 1, at most, 2 coats and nothing else. Go, I had a lot of scarves and hats just because I've always been a fan. Well... since I was 38 until now I've been cold... if you know the changes my body has had, I found myself needing more warm clothes. and I realized that of the 3 wardrobes we have, I only use one!! I've always only used one and now I need more space. So yes, I started packing out of season clothes, but everything still fits in one drawer.

I think I'll still keep the out of season clothes in totes but you encouraged me to declutter and be firm about decluttering. I think the two small shelves you put up for jewelry was a great idea. It looks nice and keeps "stuff" off the top of the dresser.

I have bins in my closet labeled for out of season tops, bottoms, and PJs, respectively and another one for “occasion wear” which has mostly fancy clothes and hiking clothes. My system is similar! My dresser is for personal clothes and pants. My closet is for work clothes, fancy clothes, and off season shoes. Sometimes I'm a little overwhelmed by seeing all of my clothes at once, but its just the season I'm in right now that I need separate business wear for work.

I have basically 2 seasons. I am now using a drawer to help switching things out and just one bin for all my heavier knitwear. I do however, hang on to dresses that I wore at places were important to me (college grad, wedding, Tanzania trip). I have the closet space. I use half of a double door walk-in closet for my normal wear clothes and if I’m feeling overwhelmed I put a sheet over the others to “hide” or create a calmer solid colored visual space.

I live in Northern Ontario with 4 distinct seasons, so I have 3 seasonal categories - warm, cold, and wet/transition. So I swap 2x year and keep out transitional season items. I shop my stash though and choose what colour/style I want for the coming season but I do have clothing that still fits me from over 25 years ago, so it keeps my wardrobe fresh and helping with not buying new items unless they are something I love and can see keeping for the next few years...or decades. Great job to you both!!!

We do the seasonal bin because we live in a small space (my husband and I each have one drawer and about 1 foot of closet space). As we have distinct and extreme seasons we swap out our clothes and store off season clothes under the bed. If I had the space to keep all my clothes out all year I would.

I am ling time not there with my closet but getting closer every year. I sing in choir so i have quite a few formal wear in different colors because we dress up for different occasions and then my everyday wear. Its so hart to have a few items. During the first year of cov!t i decludered 5 garbage bags because of you Natalie. that felt super good.

🫶 Hi there. Watched your video today, I'm based in Scotland so we have 4 seasons in 1 day! 😂 I want to thank you for your videos. They always encourage me to do things at my own pace and to not feel guilty about it. ❤

The only "seasonal bin" that I do with clothes is specifically holiday themed clothing. Christmas sweaters, Halloween shirts, etc; these all get stashed inside their respective holiday boxes. It's a pet peeve of mine to see themed things in my space when it's not that time of year, haha😅

🫶 I have used two bottom drawers for offseason clothing for years, and I love it! I like knowing what I have at all times and having access to different pieces depending on where I am or if I plan to travel somewhere where the weather is different. I agree that having everything accessible benefits me the most!

Great job! I have all my clothes and shoes, boots (except what I am currently wearing) for the whole year ie. for 4 seasons in my waredrobe all year around (even eg my ski wear, evening wear). I wear clothes using the onion layering system. So a lot of clothes I can wear in all 4 seasons which range from -15-20°C in Winter to +35°C in Summer). I love having it all in one place and visible...it is easier to manage and keep inventory low because I see it all. Especially using the vertical folding method.

I’m glad to hear a more minimal person talk ab not having a seasonal bin! I did the exact same thing and ended up coming to the same conclusion. It just doesn’t make sense for me and the space I have. I do have a small spot where I store out of season clothes but it literally only has swimsuits and hats and scarves. That works so much better in my opinion!

As an Oregonian, I do put SOME things away seasonally, but it’s usually only my heavy winter clothes, some long John’s, and a couple holiday themed pieces. I’ve got an ‘auntie claus’ t shirt and two pairs of Christmas leggings that don’t need to be out all year. But for pants/shorts/tshirts/sweaters etc all of that stays out year round 😂 we’ve had snow on the 4th of July, and some winters we miss out on the snow completely. Every day is a gamble on what the weather will be, so I always have to be prepared 😅🤣

I live in Chicago, and it is snowing today. I have all of my clothes in my closet all year long. We have a standard non-walk in closet that I share half of it with my husband. I have one of every type of clothing, like one wool coat, one rain coat, one windbreaker, etc. And most of my items like pants and coat and shoes are in nuetral colors, so it goes with everything.

I use to keep all my seasonal in my closet, but then i found I got discouraged and was more willing to donate them cause "I wasn't wearing it" when really I was asking in the wrong season. Now i keep my off season clothes in a separate closet still hung so it's easily accessible if i need something. It also makes decision making easy as i can see everything I WOULD wear for that specific season.

So many good tips in this video, but the vodka spray for smelly shirts is genius!!! I'll definitely use that hack this winter.

I have a seasonal bottom drawer too :) It makes it easier to choose what I’m going to wear, rather than have a mix in one drawer.

I do a seasonal bin. I keep a pair of shorts in my dresser for them when it starts to warm up and I haven't gotten the seasonal bin out yet. I also do the same with the summer with a sweatshirt ans cardigan for when it starts to get cool.

I live in the UK so we do have clear seasons. I do run quite warm so I can wear more summery clothes quite early in the year and late into autumn but I do keep my proper winter items separate and swap them out with high summer items. I think that time will be coming soon, might need to find my scarf and hat too!

Living in the same area- I always bring the seasonal bin at the end of Sept so I have time to identify any needs I may have going into the colder months. Most of my items stay year round except for things like snow pants, christmas sweaters and the such. I now keep that seasonal bin in my garage instead of in my home. In our area lots of things can be layered through the seasons depending on what you're up to for the day.

I’m due for a closet declutter and rearrange. I have such a small amount of clothing that I just switch the out of season clothes to one side and in season in a easy to reach area. I have a two door closet. No walk in here. If I did have a walk in I would definitely put my dresser in there.

I am in Oklahoma. We experience all 4 season in one day sometimes. Paitlring down and having 2 drawers for my seasonal items has been ideal! I can ask my kids to grab something for me if needed. Definitely makes more sense for all weather states to have it easily accessible. We also do under bed bins for thick socks and slippers.

Weston's "I look like a Stormtrooper" made me burst out laughing lol Also, Michigander here with what feels like 6 months of cold/winter lol Honestly? I don't swap out seasonal stuff or like pack it away or whatever. It stays in the drawers and closets and kinda just gets moved around with the seasons. Shorts and tank tops make their way to the front/tops of drawers during the summer, and summer dresses and things front of the closet, and then vice versa during the winter! Cuz some things (like Tshirts and some leggings or the occasional hoodie) do get worn year round :)

I'm where you are on seasonal bins...I basically move my fall winter clothes forward in my closet and put the summer spring clothes towards the back. Some of my pieces work for all seasons
i MASTERED decluttering once I learned this!
