Being the owner of a 2021 Tesla Model Y myself, and also had the chance to get my hands on a Tesla Model X and Tesla Model 3. I show you all the issues you might run into when having one of these vehicles while living in a cold-weather climate. As well as some tips and tricks I learned along the way driving, charging, and utilizing a Tesla in cold weather.
😍 If you love this video about all the Tesla cold weather problems, tips, and tricks, let us know what you think in the comments below! #tesla #cars #winter
Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Canada are currently under an “Issue Assessment Investigation” by Transport Canada for a potential issue with the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC) during operation in cold weather climates.
The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 share 75% of the parts with each other. This explains why both vehicles are seeing similar issues.
My Tesla Model Y was having these cold-weather issues. My Compressor & Super manifold were Replaced. Their customer service was top notch and they also fixed the pleather issue I had on my back seats.
One of the worse side effects of the heater not working in my Tesla Model Y is the build-up on the windshield. Ice and dirt freeze on the windshield, impacting visibility.
While my Tesla Model Y was being worked on, Tesla gave me two different models to drive. So I figured it was a good chance to assess how other Tesla cars perform in extreme cold.
First was the Tesla Model 3, which was actually too small for my family. Next, I got a Tesla Model X, which had its own set of issues. Including the falcon doors not opening and closing properly in the cold. On my Model Y, I noticed the frunk also seems to have issues opening and closing in cold weather.
I conducted a test on all 3 vehicles the Tesla Model Y, Model X, and Model 3, to see how the battery and charging behave in different cold weather conditions. Tests were performed both while wall charging at home, as well as at a Tesla Super Charger station.
Couple of things to keep in mind when charging at home in cold weather conditions. If your charger is located outside, the cable may stiffen and some snow may get into the connector on the plug.
The range is definitely significantly reduced during cold weather operations. I'll tell you exactly how much range I'm losing in real-world driving situations.
Tesla models also seem to charge slower in cold weather. Turning on the heater in the vehicle will also significantly affect the charge times. I show exactly how much in the video. Turning off sentry mode, however, helps speed up the charging process.
Tesla models will let you know when you are in cold weather operating by displaying a blue snowflake on your screen. As well as displaying how much range they predict you'll be losing because of the cold temperatures.
One thing of note with the heating system. I personally found that my Tesla Model Y does a great job heating the top of my body, but a terrible job heating the lower half of my body. I personally think this is due to the battery under the vehicle retaining the cold.
Throughout this whole process, I received fantastic customer service from Tesla. Both through the app and directly chatting with a Tesla representative.

The Model X you were driving doesn’t have a Heat Pump, so it draws far more power. Plus you were using a 24A charger, the Model X, Y and 3 all support 48A charging, which would have compensated for the heater running at full tilt.

Did you do any charge testing after properly preconditioning the battery? it showed you were only taking 6kw of charge at the super charger right when you plugged in cold. If you precondition and heat it up youll get 150-250kw of charging, even if you didnt precondition, as youre charging it will heat up the battery to charge faster. Huge difference.

Good info, have a Model Y on order and live in Maine. To be fair, the trunk/frunk issue, the stuck windows, are problems we have with any car when ice builds up. The effect on the battery is expected. With a gas powered vehicle, a traditional car battery can lose charge in extreme cold and not start, and so can't warm up. It's a trade off, I guess, for not having to do fluid changes and refills and maintain mechanical parts like exhausts, starters, alternators, spark plugs, catalytic converters, etc. A common issue that I see with the cold weather reviews is that snow and ice gets into the frunk. I wonder if lining the edge with the weather proofing self-adhesive strips you would use on house doors would help that.

Get a reliable car instead of garbage like Chrysler and you won't have to do regulator maintenance on catalytic convertors, starters, alternators etc. Battery is a consume item on a Tesla as well. I don't know about Tesla but radiator and its fluid to maintain battery temperature is also a thing on EVs. You spend less on brakes and transmission while gas vs EV charging is a wash if you are charging at a public charger (reality for many EV buyers). In case of Tesla and many other EVs, we also have to remember that you are paying thousands of dollars more compared to a well equipped and reliable Toyota, Mazda or even Honda. You might be thinking that you are doing the environment a favor but it definitely isn't a cost proposition. I'm not even going to go into the whole carbon footprint that is needed to mine Lithium since we aren't at high levels of lithium battery recycling yet. An electric lawn mower might help you recover cost against a gas mower but not a Tesla.

@@JTR253 i disagree with your statement and this does not apply to most developed countries. currently driving a 2nd hand Tesla S2017 and this car costs a lot less than othere equally luxurious cars to maintain, it also costs me 1/3rd or less per km to drive (pure fuel wise) almost no moving parts = less maintenance, have you driven an electric car more than 6 months ? where do you get your stats from ?

I'm a MY owner too in NY, and the most surprising thing about this review is the "great customer service." It's definitely not the case for me... I do think we are still in the early adopter phase, and the next gen models will continue to improve. There's pros and cons to any vehicle, and all cars have some sort of reliability issue during their lifetime. The defrost feature has worked perfectly on my vehicle in the winter, and I love it. Range does drop and an extra 10-20% overall as expected. In the spring, I use 10% to get to work in the winter I use 12% on avg, plus a 2-3% to heat/defrost the car after work. But its worth every % 😂.

I really like the idea of EV's, but videos like this show me that owning one probably wouldn't be all that practical for me, at least not yet. I live in an apartment building, and an old one at that with no access to a garage, so my car is always parked outside, nothing I can really do about that unfortunately. I also live in a fairly rural area, and while there is one Tesla charging station I know of (which is about a 20-25 minute drive from where I live), winters over here can be harsh. So maybe later down the line when the technology improves a little bit more, and if I can ever afford it (big IF lol) I might consider it. But for now, my little old chevy cruze works just fine for me lol

The air-cooled VW Beetles had gasoline-fueled heaters to keep the cabin warm back in the 60's and 70's. Maybe you need one of those.

My folks owned a new 1968 Beetle and a used 1956 Beetle before that. I was mechanically familiar with both of these cars, rode in both of them a lot, and also drove the '68. There was no such gasoline fueled heater of which you write in either one of these cars. If somebody had such a heater on a Beetle it was not stock equipment. Stop making stuff up. The air cooled engine on the Beetle used a heat exchanger on the exhaust manifold to heat the cabin. There were 2 vents under the back seat at floor level and this is where most of the heat came thru because of proximity to the rear mounted engine. There were 2 vents at floor level in the front, and 2 vents at windshield level for defrost, and these front vents didn't make much heat at all. And so when the weather got real cold we had trouble defrosting the windshield, just like a Tesla. But unlike a Tesla, the 1968 Beetle was dirt cheap at $1800 new, and my dad got the 1956 Beetle for 50 bucks.

@@onemoremisfitthey existed because I bought a used bug I think it was a 62. It had the little motor in t front for heat and it drew gas out of the main tank. It would smoke like crazy when I first started it and it didn’t work very good. I was 18 yo and just drove it for fun as a second car.
@onemoremisfit
@onemoremisfit 6 ай бұрын
@@alleyoop5185 Probably aftermarket and dangerous. Our bugs made a ton of heat and would roast you, the only problem was about 90% of it was coming from the rear, so you had to be driving for a while to get enough heat all the way to the windshield in bitter cold.
