Starting my Toyota Carina II from 1992 after standing in -28°C (-18°F) for 24+ hours without block heater.
Lots of dark smoke + low oil pressure for a few seconds...
I then take it for a little drive where I show you guys how the landscape looks when it's this cold.

I wish I could say the same... I have three 80s Toyotas: a 1987 Celica 2.0L GT Targa/Convertible, a 1988 Camry 2.0L GLI and a 1991 (80s by heart) Carina2 1.6 GLI (in white just like this one here, without the spoiler). The last one is probably the nicest car I'll ever own. Absolutely prestine condition! But I'm afraid to drive it, because of my history of overheating the other two... I'm a cautious driver and enjoy cruising WAY more than spirited driving (wich is the only way to realy enjoy such old Toyotas if we're honest), but still... I know they're old and have had many owners before me, but it's hard to believe that they would run absolutely great in one moment and boil in the other. It has to be me! So my newest entry of classic Toyotas might be kind of wasted on me... :( I'm still in love with it, though! ;)

Man's that's coool that your old toyota tells you when your washer fluid is low. My 2001 Corolla doesn't tell me. But old Toyotas are always well built!!

The reason that you see all that smoke at the beginning of starting a car in the cold like that which is actually Steam is just a combination of moisture in the air and unburned fuel trust me if it was smoke it would definitely linger a lot more than it does in that video I've had old crappy cars that in the cold when you start them up they actually smoke like doesn't come out and go a few feet away from the car and then dissipated actually like makes a giant Cloud that is hard to see through and even if you are running a very light weight oil in the engine it would probably still be a good idea to reduce engine wear and tear and make the engine last longer in really cool temperatures like that to go ahead and plug it in and use the block heater if only for three or four hours before starting the car to get the oil pre warmed up so it can float easier and again when first starting car that wasn't smoke it was steam as the car set there and idled lessened because the engine got warm and the engine was having a fuller combustion as well as when the car was cold the engine was high idling at 2000 RPM versus its around 7 maybe 800 RPM idle when it warms up.

Carina is most reliable of those. I have frend who has 680 000 km 1.6 gas engine Carina. Original engine. And other dude i know has 560 000 km Carina. I had 1991 Camry 8 years and it was most reliable car i have ever had. It's shame that it got too rusty. Odometer stopped to 480k, but engine, electronics (power mirrors, windows...)and everything else still works fine.

@@trumpjongun8831 hi mate the reliable and fast ,when it comes to reliability you can't beat the Japanese cars. Dad's mate hade a Toyota hiace 1993 with 860,000 with same engine and gearbox ,I remember he was driving it on 3 cylinders ,he noticed it when he had to tupup the fluids that the spark lead was off the spark plug. That's reliability at its best.

@@beastman.330 Yeah, Hiace and Land cruiser are the most reliable Toyotas (especially diesels ofc). We had a Hiace taxi in our town which had over million km. Original engine, but they changed gearbox once. It didn't even break, but they sold it to Africa :)

I live in a region that normally sees -40F/-40C during winter. I've been driving for over 20 years. I've never once used a block heater. battery warmer, or anything in a car. The two key things you need to do is (1) Use a 0 weight synthetic motor oil and synthetic transmission fluid (if manual gearbox) and (2) Use a good battery (high end gel type is nice). If you do that, typically you'll never have a problem starting your car in winter, and the oils will be far less sensitive to cold temperatures so the engine and gearbox will feel a lot closer to normal. The smoke is nothing, perfectly normal for any car in the cold. There's a lot of water vapor coming out.

those toyotas are damn dependable that's for sure! if I didn't have the Fiat (which by the way used to start no problem in temps down to -36 when i was a lil child ;P) after my uncle I would be looking for an older Toyota or Nissan that's for sure. enjoyable video there. sad that a honest, good video like this doesn't even get 200 views while some dude who stole others' cold start footages without even asking, slapped them together and posted with a misleading title and thumbnail got 4 million views in less than a month. youtube's shit ;P

Greeting from Quebec, chief. Check my video of my 2010 Vibe starting in -22c. Greyish smoke is perfectly normal on a cold start like that, car using a rich mixture because of the cold. What you shouldn't do is open the fan until the engine temp guage starts to move, you are removing heat from the engine prolonging the warmup.

change to transmission oil to synthetic, that will improve shifting when it is cold.. remember that also a transmission needs to warm up before it is properly lubricated and can take full load
