A cowboy buys a horse from the town pastor. The pastor explains, “To make the horse go, you gotta yell, ‘Thank God!’ And to make it stop, yell, ‘Hallelujah.’” The cowboy rides away. He rides all day and starts to nod off in the saddle when he notices he is about to ride straight over a cliff. Searching his memory, he yells to the horse, “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” The horse grinds to a stop just at the edge of the cliff. The cowboy wipes the sweat off his forehead. “Phew!” the cowboy sighs. “Thank God!”

As a veterinarian considering all the saddle sores, girth galls and sore backs from poor fitting, narrow, pinching, heavy, moving, rubbing, broken tree saddles I've seen and the fact that our native forefathers, including the Egyptians, Native Americans, Romans, Greeks, Ancient Chinese warriors, Mongolians, Arabians, and most of the first horseman in history who rode their horses either bare back or with rudimentary blankets, straps and leather hides on their backs ( for the riders comfort not the horses). I cannot possibly deduce how a human derrier whose rider weight in at max 130 lbs with hardly any contact with the back at all ( watch the images carefully) and moving in perfect harmony with the horses natural motion not behind or in front of the motion or with a downward driving dressage seat, or a backward seat as in the old hunter jumper seat or the western roping seat or the barrel racing rider body positions can possibly be harmful to a 1000 lb horse moving with natural unconstrained ease and balance. So much less harmful than the circus performers and acrobats who actually stand and do tricks inclduing jumping and landing on the horses lumbar spinal area/loins and rump ( sacroiliac joint) which is undeniably the worse area to place weight to bare on the horses spinal column for mechanical strength and support. The withers and rib cage and the thoracic spinal column are the most supported and structurally sound section of the horses spine and this lithe supple well balanced girl moving in total rythmand harmony with her horse and mostly in contact with her legs and thighs on the barrel of his ribs (rib cage) without spurs, as we see in so many sports poorly applies due to poor leg position and unstable seats, cannot possible be damaging his back or muscles. Dissect a horse and see the bony support, muscle structures and ligaments in the riders seat area. Then look at the spines of old deceased or retired racing and dressage and jumping, sport horses either in post- mortem specimens or radiographic studies and then make comments on her riding style with educated opinions and some degree of anatomical knowledge and experience. Rather choose to direct your attention and criticize the extreme training aids applied through the forces and abnormal head and neck position of the popular German Rolkur artificially applied tack aids and how it negatively effects the movement, development, strength and comfort and creates muscle stiffness and pain and short and long term effects on efficiency of movement on the neck and back of the horse!!!!! Downright cruel and disgusting way to skip years of classic training to condition for suppling, strength and balance in order to rush horses through dressage test levels for a quick buck and a few blue ribbons and titles.If more people rode and trained like this we wouldn't have had to invent a need for equine chiropractors!!

M. Ashton To DVM Ashton, thank you for your sharing your expertise and the clarification of proper riding technique. Certainly bareback is more comfortable for the rider and horse. Those doubting should be willing it practice, practice, practice, as Ms. Burton has so patiently demonstrated. Frankly, I long for the day when 'stunt' or 'trick' riding is eliminated, and don't even mention 'rodeo' within my hearing! Ms. Burton and her horses have confidence and trust one another, in her methods of teaching (not to be mistaken for training) she lavishes praise and respect and love for the horses, and I observed how quickly the horse responded... like, 'ya wanna do that again, 'licia?' It's impossible for one to criticize her patience and abilities. Elizabeth Conboy

***** Being a leader is important in relationships with all horses. In a herd setting, it is an absolute neccesity for a horse to know who the leader is, for survival, and it will make your horse more comfortable with you if they know that you are the leader. Have your horse walk behind you. If you observe a herd, you will notice that when the herd moves, all the other horses will be at least behind the shoulder of the lead animal, if not farther back. That lead animal will always ensure that its herd is behind it.

For anybody that says she's jumping "too high" and its "bad to ride bareback" you're completely wrong. Go do some research I've had horses for over 10 years I have 5 now all of them and sound and I ride bareback on 4 of them! Think about it: Would you like to have a heavy, sweaty, sometimes uncomfortable saddle on you're back and then go riding? Or: Go riding as freely as you want without a saddle. And by the way, your riding is superb! Well done :)
@xAliceWings
@xAliceWings 8 жыл бұрын
+Kellie Colborne it actually really is bad to only (!) ride bareback... The saddle is suppsed to fit and distribute (sorry if that's not the right word for it, I'm not a native speaker) the weight of the rider properly on the horse's back. To never ride with a saddle will make the horse's back muscles build up wrong making it unable of actually carrying a rider and eventually causing it pain. Not saying that riding bareback is always bad, but for the daily work one should really put a saddle on for the best of the horse.
@melaniesavile8116
@melaniesavile8116 6 жыл бұрын
Surely the horse would muscle up to allow for the work that it is doing, in this case jumping naturally and unimpeded by the rider sitting lightly and in perfect balance. Why would even the best fitting saddle be better than the horse’s own body? If the rider was a) heavy b) riding behind the movement or c) bumping up and down on the horse’s back because her position wasn’t secure then I would agree that a saddle may be preferable but this is clearly not the case. Does a horse not move better loose in the field rather than in tack, in a school with rider confined to the saddle?
@RoanAndRoaming
@RoanAndRoaming 5 жыл бұрын
Saddles were made for long rides. They keep pressure off the spine. A horses back has VERY little muscle between the spine and skin. You can poke the spine with your finger. Riding bareback for an hour or longer can do sores and damage to the horse.

your work and your story is amazing! I used to do free riding with an old paint horse... just gives an amazing feeling.. But never jumped that high and never had your balance, thats incredible! :-) 2 months ago I bought my own horse which came directly from the race track. still a lot to learn of course, but one aim would be free riding of course. All the best to you and your horses - gold rush has amazing color and painting by the way :-)
