I feel like a lot of the lower tiers probably aren’t (or shouldn’t be) totally legal. Asking people to show up alone in random places already sounds like a bad idea. And a lot of the straight up torture ones are definitely pretty sketchy.

I feel like the waivers can protect to a point, but when I start hearing things about sex toys being shoved down throats and stuff I feel like if someone was triggered enough by that and went to the police a "waiver" wouldn't really hold up. I understand the shock behind the "extreme" scares but sexual stuff goes a bit too far. Beat the shit out of me all you want, but don't violate me in any way. That's not scary it's just uncomfortable and wrong.

I think it's important to remember that all the lower tier stuff is made for literal masochists, people who get turned on by the idea of being tortured. They've got a very specific clientele for a reason.

There was only one haunted house I ever went to. Actors could touch you, you were in pitch black, and it was pretty nuts. I do not remember the name. I'm a horror freak but i have schizophrenia and Im generally OK but this was too much. There was a point where I was stuck in a pitch black maze, and there were body bags everywhere. You were being chased by a doctor in a gas mask. You could barely breathe. It was so intense. I remember having a manic episode and realizing this wasn't going to work. I sank down to the floor and just sat there for a good minute, hoping he wouldnt see me. I heard him get closer, and then he finally saw me. He sank down to the floor with me and moved to grab me, and I shuffled away, and he put his hands up and said the haunt was over for me and he wasn't trying to scare me. He took his mask off and said i was shaking so hard that the body bags shook and thats how he found me. I made it halfway through. I explained I was having a manic episode and I am not usually like this, and he told me I did amazing considering that, and he helped me up, and led me to an employee room where there was a shortcut to the exit. All the actors were still in character, but incredibly polite and helped me get back to my car. They were so nice to me and it was the best haunted house Id been in. The actors were amazing and I wasn't expecting the walls to start moving and closing in. 11/10 would go back again just to say hi to the clown that walked me out

I worked for Blackout - enough time has passed and I think it's never coming back so I can say that it was never a torture experience and so much of what you see online about it was never true. It was definitely intense but it was designed to make you fear what could happen based on its reputation. Trust me when I say we spent two full weeks being trained on safety. Our directors were insane about safety and asserted that if any of us ever did anything to hurt someone intentionally or unintentionally, we'd be fired immediately. Yes we do a lot of manhandling of people but it was done in a way that would always be safe for both the audience and the actor. There was never any real vomit or bodily fluids - it would always be simulated... how do else would we be able to do those things for 100 audience members per night, lol? Ultimately we wanted everyone to make it through the house. In my scene I was playing a weirdly sympathetic person and I'd always give the audience a chance to breathe and collect themselves before going forward if I could tell they were about to yell the safe word. And yes, there was a safe word. You'd yell "safety" and every single actor was on a walkie earpiece at all times, so we'd immediately yell into the walkie and you'd be escorted out within seconds. The experience was designed to be fun, NOTHING like McKamey. McKamey is literal torture and should not exist, it's not even a haunted house. If you don't believe me, just think for a second: Blackout was located in NYC. You can't just get away with literally torturing people in 2019 in a public space where you charge for tickets in New York. McKamey gets away with it because he's independently doing that crap, but Blackout was literally an LLC business. It's all an illusion. Hope I didn't ruin anyones fun but I just love talking about Blackout as it's one of my fondest memories and my favorite job I ever had.

Reminds me of the time when I was about 10 years old, and I went on this circle ride at a carnival. I forget the name of it, but it’s the one that is literally just a circle that has rollercoaster style seating that goes forwards and backwards until it loops around so you’re upside down a couple times. I was tall enough to go on the ride, but I guess I was too skinny, and my friends mom had to hold me in place so I wouldn’t slip through the chest bars and fall out of the seat during the upside down parts.

I recall hearing about a marine going through McKamey Manor to get the reward money, but was thrown out about halfway through because he wasn't breaking. Not too sure about it's validity, but hey if it's true then it's another mark against the owner for being a scumbag.
@Forged4War206
@Forged4War206 2 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, he had to be removed because he was having symptoms of onset hypothermia due to all the cold water torture. Regardless, it was still scummy. If they start to realize someone isn't breaking, they'll just torture you to a point where you have to be removed to prevent an actual medical emergency. Nothing about it seems fair at all, which is why I don't understand why people go through it hoping to make it to the end. It seems to be designed to either make you want to quit or to force you to quit.

@@Forged4War206 This is exactly why people should draw the line if ego/hubris gets out of control. A lot of people think that having a big ego is defined as just being a jerk, when in reality it can also be a very naiive and unrealistic state of mind to be stuck in if you don't keep yourself grounded. A lot of the time, people slip into this state of mind without even realizing it because they're having too good of a time. Some may not even notice until it's past the point of no return. As a die-hard haunt fan, I don't consider "touch haunts" actual haunts and more "extreme experiences". To me, a haunt is an attraction or event with the soul purpose to scare guests WITHOUT any form of harm. The Japanese haunt in tier 3 has groups of 4 for a reason...in Japanese, you can refer to the number 4 as "yon", or "shi", the latter of which sounds like the word for "death". It's a spooky number for a lot of people out there, but it'd be similar to an English haunt requiring groups of 6 or 13 people.

I really wish Russ McKamey would stop getting the notoriety he thinks he deserves. He didn't make a haunted attraction, he made a jackass escape room that no one can win, and he gives highly immersive/"extreme" haunts a bad name.
@koomori
@koomori 2 жыл бұрын
I personally think someone needs to just straight up sue Russ. Possibly multiple people. I don't think there's much of a payday there, so it's more the domain of a lawyer who feels the need to do some good arranging a class-action suit. @Christopher Neff: I think there is a distinction between extreme haunts and McKamey Manor. And I think if you're going to say that all extreme haunts are sick and disgusting then you have to look at haunts *in general* and figure out a sort of "scale of sick/disgustingness." Certainly not all haunts could be considered on that spectrum, but, hell, even the Disneyland Haunted Mansion involves a fake hanged body, which one could rightly say is "sick and disgusting." To some extent *horror in general* is founded in the sick and disgusting. I definitely don't think that makes anyone who patronizes even extreme haunts "depraved." I'm not personally familiar with extreme haunts and I'm not... representative of the normal person when it comes to "normal" haunts. I don't go to haunts to be scared, I go because I like monsters and macabre stuff (the modern trend of ableist tropes and zombie cliches is honestly depressing), and I find it interesting to see what they've put together with frequently very small budgets. There's a haunt that operates near me that actually has four different "experiences," and one is an Alice in Wonderland themed one, which is incredibly interesting for its use of UV lights and paint and diffraction glasses to create a sort of ...real world 3d movie effect? Add to that the horror-ification of Wonderland visuals as well as a huge Jabberwocky puppet, and it was a great experience even as someone who "isn't scared by horror" (flirting with the red queen when I got to her scene was not a bad part either). Some of these extreme haunts I would be very interested in for that same reason, to see what they've created, and experience macabre/creepy scenes/aesthetics. But then others... I mean if I want to get punched, I'll go spar someone, but that's just me. But my point is... people go to haunts for a lot of reasons. In general, I think people go to be scared, because catharsis *is* a thing, and it's basically the same reason people ride rollercoasters. I think a lot of people go to extreme haunts for that same reason, as well as out of morbid curiosity and a desire to see if they handle it. That said, I think Russ McKamey is... I think it might be fair to say he is a "sick man." I think he very much enjoys doing to people what he does, and in a very different, much more real way than people who do other extreme haunts. And he's found that an extreme haunt not only lets him do these things under a veneer of legality, but also brings his ...we'll say subjects to him. I guess what I'm saying is that... to some extent, I think that without MM, Russ McKamey would be doing the same exact thing, but in a way that is definitely not legal, or at least be extremely tempted to. The actual legality of MM is questionable, but it *is* questionable, rather than "definitely illegal." I'm not sure one could find a way in which he is breaking the law, save, perhaps, through some very devoted adherence to the legal concept of consent that our justice system does not seem interested in (ie, the idea that while you may initially give consent, you can revoke it at any time). I think he could definitely be shut down by a judge, and if he continued to operate, *then* he would be actively, definitively breaking the law, but as it is, a lot of people just do not understand waivers (they are in no way as legally binding as the kind of person who makes you fill one out tells you they are) and so... well, like I said, I think in order for Russ to be shut down, a lawyer would have to go out of their way to pursue that, to great personal cost.

@@christopherneff6104 Oh boy. Where to begin... There are absolutely haunted houses that involve consensual, informed touch (yes, involving waivers - and NOT sexual in nature, just stuff like a stern shoulder grab to better immerse someone in a scene) in a highly effective, albeit safe way to enhance a scare. Nearly every other "extreme" haunt is just immersive theater. It's camp, it's fun. This isn't. This is just straight up hurting people, and even the oh-so "scary, evil, and mentally ill people" who work at/run "extreme" haunts don't condone anything other than elaborate make-believe. If you take it this seriously, they're not for you. They're not for everyone! It's a more intense experience than your standard pop-out-and-go-boo fare... although there is absolutely nothing wrong with "normal" haunted houses either. To say that all extreme haunts are evil or sadistic is goofy and sanctimonious. We're just actors, mate. There's no secret ~Satanic~ motive, we're just entertaining people in a way that requires more audience participation than walking in a conga line. Russ McKamey is a total piece of shit and I can guarantee the people he hires are too, but his torture porn escape room isn't a reliable representation of "extreme" haunts either... or this generation? I'm assuming you mean Millennials/Gen Z? Whom McKamey is decidedly not a member of? Like I said, he gives us a bad name. The rest of us don't get any more extreme than simulated gore and intense play-acting.

I’ve done the 17th door twice. The shocks only hurt for a second but nothing that will leave marks. Everything that happens to you is over very quickly and you can say “mercy” whenever you want. Every room is carefully engineered and it’s a very professionally run haunt. I will say that they love using claustrophobic situations, especially with their new grand-finale that they added for 2021. It cleverly incorporated people’s fears of tight spaces and drowning at the same time. But when I did it, it was over well before I was expecting it too. It’s a very bearable and surprisingly fun “extreme” haunt and I highly recommend it!

As an LV local, I can’t in good faith recommend Gates of Hell in Las Vegas, or anything by the company. The real torture happens behind the scenes where they mistreat the hell out of staff. I’ve known folks who worked there who were injured on the job due to sheer negligence (think like leaving a tripping hazard in the actor’s only portion, or even ignoring fire hazards). I also can’t confirm or deny this, but there’s a rumor going around that last season someone pissed in the fog machine. It seems unbelievable but I’ve heard it from a few different people, and on google reviews there’s a few people complaining that the whole place smells like peepee. I went to Gates of Hell with my best friend and her family 2 or 3 years ago. What you've mentioned in the video of the attraction is exactly how it went for me. And two of her family members had to use the "safe word" after a couple minutes in. I'll list down the extremes of what I've went through because why not: • We were forced to be put into a tight 'closet' alone separated from our group which would very much make anyone with claustrophobia regret their life decisions. • We're put into a bloody room with a live actress laying on the table with her organs out and a man with a shotgun threatening us with it which he will then use to shoot himself later. • We had to walk through hanging chains that literally SHOCKED us with electricity. • We're yelled at to go against a wall for the firing squad to get ready to "execute" us. And my god, I was expecting something to shoot out from those guns. • Lastely, we're lined up next to an ill bride who walks around caressing us (and I mean literally touching us from our arms to face) with her fingers using electrical shock. I remember going "OW" when she shocked my neck then her yelling "You, shut the f*ck up!" to me afterwards. Yep, _quite_ an experience.

I am really intrigued by the “Alone” haunt. The ones where it’s clear the actors see their jobs as art, and want to provide a once in a lifetime experience, are the haunts that pull me in and make me want to plan a trip. Even if the experience is terrifying or painful, if it takes you out of your own head and shakes up the way you see the world, then it’s worth it. The “17th Door” looks like the most fun to go to with another person thus far - rides the line between extreme and just intense, which would be a good into to extreme haunts. I’m still unsure if I would want to go to a haunt that is just me being physically abused for an hour - I don’t think I could even make the decision without trying something a little tamer first, then you can evaluate whether the painful experience has a positive impact on you or not.

@@christopherneff6104 Why are you so bothered? Also do you really think that living a life full of positivity and a life where nothing bad happens will really shape your views for the better? No, you're just going to be used to living a life of comfort. Say you had a traumatising near death experience, is that really going to make you think negatively for your entire life? No, I think you'd probably be more appreciative and grateful for things in your life, obviously it won't be as easy as that but you get the point. If you truly believe that there is nothing in life that is worth experiencing terror and pain for then I'm sorry but you must live a bland life, constantly living in comfort rather than actually experiencing life. Your definition of art is so limited, art is not just painting, music and "doing good things for people", art is an expression in an infinite number of forms. Who's to say that haunted houses are not art? It is a form of creative expression and it provokes a response from consenting participants, why is that any different to a painting or a song? Who are you to say that people who enjoy and people who work at haunted houses are sociopaths and psychopaths, it's not any different from sitting down and watching a horror movie. @@christopherneff6104 I'm sure that none of these will cause PTSD to someone or real trauma and if someone is susceptible to that, I doubt that they would even consider going to one of these. I agree with most of what you are saying, I too am not an adrenaline junkie, though I do enjoy a good scare sometimes because sometimes life does get boring sometimes. However just because other people enjoy it does not make them sick and depraved, and what makes you say God wouldn't approve of any of this, has he told you this himself? No one knows why or what life is but what we know for sure is that life is not perfect, you cannot have a 100% good life that is just absurd. You seem to have such concrete opinions and knowledge about what life is supposed to be. You have a right to be secular and not chase an adrenaline rush, just as much as people who do want to go on rollercoasters and experience that. Just because people want to experience thrill and excitement does not make them animals. The concept of open minded and close minded is not to push any sort of agenda upon anyone, in fact you are doing this yourself. Your moral compass does not allow you to see that in this case, people who go to these haunted houses are consenting participants, this is their interest, and the people working at the houses are just helping them achieve what they seek. You are actively arguing against people's interests because you are "morally pure" and everyone else is a sinner. You don't seem to be open to the idea that people enjoy this and it does not harm anyone else, it does not make the workers or participants any less than you, they have a right to do what they please without effecting anyone else, as do you.

I've gone to a few shows at Zombie Joe's--they're an acting troupe, not a haunt per se, and put on crazy black box theater-style shows composed of micro-skits that are usually strung together with a seasonal theme and music. The whole thing has a very stripped down and punk vibe, so nudity, blood, and edginess are fully a part of it, and if you're lucky you can get on-stage seats to see everything up close and personal. That said, I have been to a "haunt" they put on one halloween where they converted the theater to a makeshift ride haunted mansion style--except you're literally being pushed around in a little cart by an actor from scene to scene. At one point they drag you out and push you through the rest of the haunt, where any amount of groping and prodding is expected until they shove you into the writhing pile of bodies that is the final scene. I went through it twice, the second time being the more "extreme" version where I had to strip down to my underwear, was jabbed with dildos, and then thrown out half-naked into the streets of LA. All in all a great time, highly recommend 👍

Real sad west Michigan's "The Haunt" wasn't included in this! They have 5 themed sections over more than 140 rooms, with nearly 100 actors and 62 animatronics. Actors are amazing with awesome makeup, SO much detail and unique scares. Truly full of passionate people. My favorite section is the clown circus section. Neon and blacklight paint literally pop because they give you these cool glasses to wear. I went there when I was 14 and a horror baby, nearly pissed myself. Went this year at 21, I've watched the scariest horror movies for years by now and they still got me a few times! Great at giving an unnerving atmosphere, well placed jumpscares, and actors that really know how to make some insane sounds. 10/10, everyone should go. Hope someone with a decent channel size makes a video on it so others can appreciate all this work. Like, it must take over a month just to set everything up in the building!

You can add Busch Gardens' Howl-O-Scream to the list. I went last year thinking it was going to be so-so compared to Horror Nights, but it actually surprised me at how decorated, intense, and fairly long the houses were. It was also a lot more intimate, as Universal was forced to install a bunch of plastic screens for the scare-actors as a result of Covid restrictions, but BG somehow got away with being pretty in-your-face with their actors. HHN is still the king with their 10 houses and two live shows along with the various scare zones, but H-O-S is definitely worth considering.

The happy music in the background makes this a bit funny but easy to watch I hate the ones with some creepy ass song in the background than jump scares here and there I literally love this channel

Pretty cool video. Not sure how well Miasma would work on me since Ive been through most that shit as a kid, but honestly it seems the most interesting.

i went to a hunted attraction in my town that was behind a church in the woods and i thought it wasn’t going to be that bad because i saw a lot of families with their young children there but the stuff they had was pretty intense and some of actors were up in my face screaming at me 😭😭honestly scared me but it was fun

The tower of terror is also at Hollywood studios in Florida and I could ride it for an entire day and never get sick of it. It’s such a fun and immersive ride

I think they probably meant the California one, which kept the same mechanisms and building but changed the theme to Guardians of The Galaxy and went from Haunted to an action themed ride

I love the sound of Rotten Apple 907's underwater-themed haunt! Would love to see more creative and unexplored settings like that.
