In this video, I share 10 lessons I have learned from living with a minimalist wardrobe for the last five years and an extreme minimalist wardrobe for the last couple of years. Most of them were actually unexpected, and I have to say that I can recommend trying out a minimalist wardrobe for almost everyone. Let me know what your biggest wardrobe lesson was so far in the comments!

When I wasn't a minimalist and I had a lot more clothes, there were days when I regretted my outfit choice, felt uncomfortable in it etc. Now that I only have a limited amount of clothes that never happens. It mostly happened because I used to wear pieces of clothes just because I hadn't worn them in a long time. So a minimalist wardrobe really made decisions easier.

I can totally relate! I used to wear the things I didn't like at home because I felt like I still had to wear them but I always felt uncomfortable... I am so happy that I now just have clothes I really like and wear them all the time☺

I was scared that now I have "nothing to wear" so when I reduce the amount I will have even more "norhing to wear", sit and cry and stay in pyjamas. But maybe you are right - I will do a move - choose the favs, pack the others and remove from sight for few months, imagine they are gone forever and see how it works. Thanks! 😻

Over 40 years ago, when I worked in an office, I made a chart of all the combinations I could make with what I had. I had 3 trousers, 1 pair jeans, 5 shirts, 3 cardigans. That was the biggest wardrobe I ever had. I like earrings and bracelets. I have never owned a white t-shirt. I live near Chicago. Tina

Makes sense for me - I mean I would be scared for myself! Because I have a huge washing machine and sometimes I need to wait for more clothes of a kind to load it (economically and ecologically) and then 2 or 3 days of drying (in autumn - winter time) and I assume it could happen I must wear a dirty piece because I have no clean and dry one! So the point is: I must make my "capsule" wardrobe less capsuled - more items for every season. (I stayed 10 days on a trip with a minimal clothes amount packed, like "I'll wash every day what I weared and I can wear it 2 days later." The weather was hot, rainy and humid. My clothes washed in hand got stinky - they didn't want to dry! I had nothing to wear because my clothes were dirty or stinky! Maybe the critical comments come from people who had similar experience.... :( ). I love your channel and I've just subscribed - and no worries, normally I don't write such painfully long comments. :)

I guess people think that cause it takes a lot of effort to clean them frequently and it might give people the impression that she wears stuff for longer than other people would before washing.

When people feel offended or explain themselves according to how “you’re living” that’s probably because they feel discontented about themselves... and that has *nothing to do with you*. I return here to learn from you, it reminds me to question the items I own, to questions the habits I have and the energy I attract. That’s it and I’m grateful.

Hey Lia. I hope you’re ok. My version of a minimalist wardrobe is that I only own dresses. It’s just my preference and I find them most comfortable. Some people have commented that they think I have a lot of clothes but all my dresses fit in one small wardrobe. I guess it’s a bit of an illusion because all my dresses are different so it doesn’t look repetitive. It’s really easy to get dressed in a morning too because I don’t have to think about what matches with what, they’re all one piece 😀 I just put leggings, tights or nothing on my legs depending on the weather! Sorry super long comment :)

I have switched from pants to skirts. I wear the Macabi skirts because they have huge pockets and I can tie them up for rough hiking. I like pants, but, being tall, it was just so stressful to try to find pants that were long enough and that fit me well. Skirts make it so much easier!

Another thought people are offended when I cut my hair. I had a huge afro and they literally walked up to me and said *Why, when you had such beautiful hair?!* They couldn’t fathom it, example a woman struggling with hair loss or not able to grow long hair. And so I just nod (working on not explaining myself) and realize that their hurt isn’t about me ... 🤷🏾‍♀️

Hi Treasure, I've had similar reactions to cutting my long hair short and letting the grey grow out. I'm not "letting myself go" but embracing who I am as a woman, not a girl anymore but a woman who's lived a bit of life and confident in her years not trying to deny them. Anyway, good for you wearing your hair how you want. My college roomate went from an afro to very short and looked beautiful.

When I shaved my hair off a few years ago my best friend asked me if I was having a breakdown 😂 Actually I'd never felt better! I also got the comments "You'll never get a boyfriend now" and "You're pretty enough to get away with it ". Fascinating and freeing experience. I grew it back though because I didn't want the maintenance of keeping it short plus my head was cold. No one has said anything about me growing out my grey hair, I guess they know who I am now and that there's no point!

Hi Lia. I live alone so the size of my wardrobe is determined by washing one load of laundry once a week, including towels and all. I buy colors I can wash together, nothing has to be separate. When I had less I used to hand wash everything because I never had enough for a washer load. Hand washing and hang drying some clothes every day was problematic if I skipped just one day. But it did work and I could do that. However, I choose not to.
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 3 жыл бұрын
I can totally understand that! I think I would also own more if I lived alone because I am not sure I would be willing to wash everything by hand. And I totally do that too with the colors. I don't want to have to do multiple loads because of different colors ☺

Regular people with large wardrobes tend to wear the same clothes on repeat anyway. The whole point of minimalist wardrobe is to identify those clothes you wear regularly and only have those. Effectively you will end up wearing the exact same variety it is just that the actual wardrobe is vastly reduced without the daunting unworn clothes to confuse the decision making. Those remaining clothes will be cleaner since they are washed regularly and no longer stored with the musty unworn clothes.

Jeans are the hardest thing for me to buy. I'm really picky, so I try on at least a dozen pairs before I find the one I want to own. When I find the perfect pair and stock up, then my weight changes. Or if only buy one pair, I wear it out, so I kick myself for not stocking up.

Oh, I can imagine! I find jeans also really hard and I am not super happy with the one lair I currently have. I hope you will maybe find a good brand that produces the same model for a long time so you can always just get the right size of the same jeans again every time you need one... ☺ but I know that is a rare case because brands usually only have the same item for up to a few months...

I know exactly what you mean about the haters. I used to work in a restaurant and we were required to wear all black and after work sometimes I'd go into a store and I would have everyone staring at me, it was quite unnerving. There was even a woman one time who made a noise of disgust looking right at me. I'll never understand why people feel the need to judge sensible clothing... My friends and family also don't understand (extreme) minimalism and make fun of me for it. I have 4 tops and 3 pairs of leggings that I wear all year round and I definitely get some strange looks wearing leggings in the hot summers of Virginia but this has been working for me since 2016 and I couldn't see my life without (extreme) minimalism. Love your channel by the way.

How does this work in reality,no judgement do what you like.. But work clothes alone is a full wardrobe by requirement. Wearing jeans or sweat pants and a hoody in your house is one thing.. Going to a funeral or wedding or any other occasions or even doing hobbies and activities only wearing sweat pants or jeans as the option is definitely a personal choice.

People feel offended because they're probably frustrated and have prejudice about owning very few things as they were taught that owning a lot of stuff means being wealthy and giving others the impression that they're rich. Something I've always laughed at. I own more clothes than you but still not too many and I wear the same stuff over and over, I've had sweaters and jumpers for over 15 years and will wear them till they fall apart. Never had problems with other people, at least that I'm aware of, but some people told me that owning very little of everything isn't normal and it's typical of poor or homeless people. I always reply that to me going out for shopping every day isn't normal, consummerism isn't normal either and I prefer owning few high quality things that last me a lifetime rather that hundreds of rags in the closet that cost a few Euros and are produced by slaves in developing countries.

I have started decluttering with Marie Kondo's method two years ago and have reduced my posessions a lot since then, with tons of different approaches. I have watched so many videos on minimalism and spent so much time applying what I learned. But I still feel like I am at the beginning of my road to minimalism. I am still so overwhelmed by everything and still can not find things when I am searching for them. The more I let go, the more I realise just how bad it was. I never would have admitted to being a hoarder before, simply because many people in my family are even worse! But I really was a hoarder, now I have a "normal" amount of stuff and I know that it is not enough. I need none of this. All of this time has helped me find out what my values are, and now I just need to get it done. Why is that so hard though? I want to have less inventory, I want to make my home more manageable and calmer and focus on the important things in my life, but I am having so much trouble stepping over that invisible line. What makes it even harder is that ever since I don't have everything ever in my room, other people that do not live with me have started noticing stuff "missing" from my inventory that they own. They keep telling me "You *need* ____". No, I don't. The last thing was someone told me I need more t-shirts. I have like 20 or something. How can I keep making progress if everybody around me seems to care so much in the opposite direction?

I always hesitated to throw clothes out which are still intact (and no, selling was not an option, the clothes are intact, but far away from new). And so I am happy to get rid of old clothes, get new clothes and all of this without buying new clothes.

Such a nice girl and I enjoyed this monologue a lot :) I am at the starting stage at the moment and in process of discarding "rubbish" in general, including the cloths I have had for number of years and almost never wear. It is quite unbelievable how much we can accumulate. Although, I can't see myself having a small wardrobe like yours, I must admit out of the 15+ jeans and trousers I probably wear 3 only regularly. So let's see how it will progress, I am very excited :) Thanks for sharing your view.

I like the comment about having a closet full of clothes and “nothing to wear”. Sometimes I wish I could just wear the same thing everyday! I find myself feeling forced to find a way to wear the clothes I kinda like. But now I’m thinking I’ll just give them a new home!

I want to strike a balance in my wardrobe between having enough to suit my lifestyle and still be creative with it, but not have too many pieces. I have already downsized a lot and I think it will continue to fluctuate over time and that's ok. I think it's really interesting observing these little pieces of other people's lives and seeing what aspects are important to everyone - I used to be really info clothing and makeup, but I can tell as time goes on I am more interested in collecting things to garden with and change the appearance outside my home rather than to my person. But both and many other things are OK. My situation changed - clothing and makeup allowed me to be expressive in college when I didn't have a place of my own and now that I do have that, my wants and needs have changed. Everyone's journey is fascinating!

I think a lot of the reason we gravitate to the same items In our wardrobe so often is that is massively reduces decision fatigue. Lots of people ( Steve Jobs etc. ) realise this and use it in a definite way. Most other people just have a wardrobe with 80-90% of the clothes mostly unworn.

I learned that clothes last for a lot longer than I expected them to. I purchase items hoping to wear them once a week for 3 years, but most of them are perfectly fine to continue wearing after that. I haven't owned jeans or high heals in years. My wardrobe is dresses and skirts. I've been contemplating getting a pair of pants. It's hard to choose which pair since it needs to serve me well for many situations and years. 🌺 Heidi

I think im naturally a minimalist when it comes to what i wear bc i feel more comfortable wearing a few pieces over and over. Like you there was a time when tshirt and jeans was my everyday workday attire bc thats comfortable for me and I dont care about how people view my attire...just me. Now i need to change out some old pieces and throw away what i dont wear. I just feel bad to throw away old clothes... but i know decluttering will make me feel better

I found what I thought was the best ever black tee, and bought five. Probably unsurprisingly, I only ever manage to wear three at the absolute max before it's time to do laundry again (my laundry is mostly dictated by running out of socks and underwear). Lesson learned - time to declutter two of those shirts. Someone who needs them can benefit from them.

I can imagine that that must be hard! Maybe put them in a box and get used to the thought that they are decluttered. And if you don't miss them after six months or so you can safely declutter them... Because of course, it would be sad if you decluttered things you actually want to have ☺

Hi lia!!! I think the people know that we use the same outfit again and again, but they are polite and don’t want to ofend . But children... some told me why I was wearing the same bag for months ( she knew it) and another told me why I only had three dresses ( she counted them😂) both cases the mom felt embarrassed and told me she was sorry for the rude comment of her daughter, I felt worse when she apologized. The girl didn’t say it to offend me, she was just saying something she thought interesting and want me to explain why I did it. The mom made me feel bad. That happened two years ago, now I have less clothes😅

Tip # 17 for saving your money, if your mortgage interest is too high shop around for a better rate or if you can't get a better rate extend the payment period to a longer time and pay monthly and that will lower your monthly payment.

Fine. I will start purging. :) As for what people think... It helps that you are young and beautiful. Seriously. People are more forgiving in their judgements when that's the case. If you were middle aged and not so lovely ... the judgement would be more harsh. I guarantee it. My path: I have to segment my wardrobe into roles. I have my civilian role, my farm role, and my professional (real estate broker) role. And of course, a role for things like non-farm outdoor activities which I do a lot of. But there is overlap in all these things. I can get rid of probably 75% of my clothing right now without much thought. You have inspired me to do so. Thanks!

It really depends on how much you sweat and how often do you want to run your washing machine or if you prefere to go to laundrymat once a month and run only one 20kg load or if you are happy jist handwash your t-shirt when you take shower etc. Every one is different but we usually base our judgements on our own experiences. For example I sweat a lot so I need at least two t-shirts or three for 1 day. I would feel uncomfortable wearing the same t-shirt after I took shower etc. But my father can wear the same t-shirt for one week and he just doesn't smell when even if he gets sweaty. We are the same family but we are so different in sence of body odour. He is a guy and he should smell more than me as female but it's quite the opposite. My mum never smells so it's not from her side either. I would contribute it to my hormonal and autoimmune disorders and also I eat lot of Indian curries containing onion and garlic so I can sometimes smell onion or garlic from my underpits. So diet is another factor of smell. One of many like genetic disorders like fish smell syndrom, hormones, gender, climate we live in like humidity factor, our general health or phisic and diet. Surely there are many more. So it's really unfair to estimate another person on the KZfaq has everything the sameway. So what works for you might not work for me but that's my life and that is yours. No judgement.

I really agree with everything single point and, and I m glad you highlight the journey and the changes our wardrobe goes through as we change. My journey has started 5 years ago, and at first, I didn’t really trust that I could do it, because I just love clothes, fashion and sewing. But I had to do it for practical reasons, and I experienced every thing you said. I have a clearer sense of what my style is and how it evolves. I ve been wearing the same beautiful leather boots for 6 years now in winter, and every year, I get compliments on them and people ask if they re new. Even my friends who know I have a minimal wardrobe hardly notice I wear the same pieces often. Because I barely spend money on clothes, I m able to splurge on beautiful pieces that I could only dream of before minimalism, and keeping a good shirt, or a pair of shoes for 5, 6 years gives a feeling of comfort confidence. After becoming a mother, though, I went through a crisis because of stains and juggling with different roles and situations, but I solved the issue by adding a few easily washable lounge-and-park pieces to my wardrobe. It feels like pure luxury to change my clothes when I get home. Also, because I sew a lot less for myself, I sew for others. I ve extended my skills while sewing for children, husband, family. I can finally sew all sorts of clothes I wouldn’t wear myself. I don t think I d go back to having more, and I think I can still downsize but I have a hard time parting with things I ve made.

Having a small number of clothes is great but I don’t understand it when people say ‘laundry is easier with less clothes’ as the exact same number of clothes get dirty as before.... I mean sure you can’t let laundry pile but there is still the same amount of laundry to do 🤷🏽‍♀️
@cindyunicornz
@cindyunicornz 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is because when you have more clothes you let laundry pile up (guilty) since you have more options available still. So when you do laundry you have more loads to do in a day. But when you only have a couple weeks worth of clothes in your wardrobe, you have to do laundry once a week or you have no clothes. And you only have to do one load

Never say never. I've been there. There are a lot of things that can happen to make you own more stuff. For a lot of people it's simply holding on because of monetary issues. Or because of their kids. For me it was education and a constant up and down in body weight. At some point I just gave up on the one pair of jeans, because it meant buying new jeans (etc.) every six months. And I don't want to wear a pair that doesn't fit... 🤷🏼‍♀️

I occasionally switch it up with a white t-shirt or basic blouse and only get compliments. If you plan, no one notices! 😆 A colleague of mine is brilliant with accessories (jewellery and watches) and inspired me to simplify. I'm still learning but it is truly freeing.
