May 14th 2020. A very strong Severe Thunderstorm rolled into central Ohio around 5:45 pm. The skies got extremely dark and ominous. Recorded on an iPhone Xr

I love this so much. Seeing a dark sky with bright green trees in front, in a calm neighborhood, reminds me so much of my childhood. Playing outside with my friends until it started to rain, then running inside cuz our parents were yelling at us to get inside before we got struck by lightning. The weather patterns have changed so much where I live since that time, we’d get these kind of storms maybe once every couple weeks, with lots of little storms nearly every day, but now we’re lucky if we get any kind of thunderstorm.
@johnoconnor63562 жыл бұрын
Where do you live now? In New Jersey, where I live, when it comes to storms, all too often they are scattered, which means some will get missed, and those that do get them, they are in and out in like 2 to 5 minutes.

I can relate to thst. If I had the means, I would move someplace like Minneanapolis, or Chicsgo, where storms are a little less hit and miss, and more spectacular. All too often, if big storms out that way head towards me, when they cross the mountains in Pennsylvania, that causes them to fizzle out before they reach New Jersey.

@@johnoconnor6356 I can tell you a lot of people are complaining about the lack of thunderstorms... When I was a little kid, even just 15-20 years ago, the weather was very different. We used to get thunderstorms all the time. They are a wonderful way to relax and get cozy. I lived 45 minutes northwest of Chicago, still do, and we barely get them anymore. Look up geoengineering. It is altering weather patterns. It's very sad.

Yes, i have seen some really dark clouds in thunderstorms. I moved from Coronado CA to live with my father in Lubbock TX in the mid 70s. He was a meteorologist with the small forecasting office (nka NWS/NOAA) there. He would sometimes call me when he was working to tell me to get my blanket, pillow, one of my twin mattresses and get in the bathtub until he called to give me the all clear. Few times he forgot to call me. LOL Several years later he transferred to San Antonio (his hometown) and retired there as a lead forecaster & etc after 41+ years. He helped develop a bunch of things, was a meteorologist for the space shuttle flight that had Sally Ride as the 1st woman astronaut (I attended the luncheon with everyone involved with the mission & got to meet all the astronauts) I am so proud of him. Funny thing though, I was the one in high school in San Antonio that would not ask what the weather was going to be. So, my friends made fun of me when it would rain & i didn't have an umbrella or short sleeve tops when it was cold or long sleeve sweatshirt when it was warm. I didn't watch the weather or news channels. That was back when the TV weatherman got their "forecast" from the NWS, so I assumed that my father would tell me what was going to happen if he had been at work. But with the different shifts he worked, my high school years and my part time job, sometimes I wouldn't even see him for days. My mother still can't believe he was getting paid alot of money for being 20% right. 🤣

This was a cool storm to catch right before hitting us! A severe thunderstorm indeed. Though one thing I will say. It does not even compare to the storm that hit us in August 2007. That was a huge wall cloud that was almost black! Even though I was six, it scared the crap outta me and I remember it vividly. I still have a recording of the tornado warning that was issued due to that storm.

I have. It's frightening, almost as if day has turned to night. What is even more frightening is when the clouds come at night and you can see how dark they are when the lightning flashes and the wind starts to bend the trees over and you know it isn't going to be good.

I can remember a sky just like that growing up in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1985. Ended up with our house and about a dozen others within a mile of us being struck by lightning in what remains one of the best/worst storms I’ve ever seen in the UK.

Wow very intense severe thunderstorm approaching it really goes to show you how unstable and volatile the atmosphere can become I can probably bet there were sufficient ingredients for a powerful thunderstorm like that awesome video

It's impossible for a thunderstorm in our country. This is amazing and scary at the same time 🙂

I had a storm like that yesterday, but WAY less severe and was WAY smaller. But it looked similar, except clouds MUCH less darker.

Weather fascinatiates me so much, when they say seek shelter immediately I’m the crazy nut who’s out there taking notes because I so much want to be a weatherman

I remember seeing a storm like this roll through my home town. I recall the sky getting really dark in seconds, the clouds were like a dark gray/green. Brought tons of hail for about a good 70mins.

When the sky or clouds cast a green shade pls be aware of the weather and on the lookout for tornadoes! I know that intense storms come from the green skies! Glad you're okay :)

It's hard to think of many other things as scary as black clouds coming toward you

Actually, there are two that I can think of: a tornado coming right toward you and a fire coming right toward you! Oh, and a flood coming your way is just as scary.

This lighting will forever be my favorite dark skies with green trees and grass and homes all having a slight glowing hue of orange or yellow. It’s quite beautiful.

When I was a kid I survived an F5 tornado in a shopping center. A lot of people were killed, and for many years a sight like this would turn me to liquid. I can thank Doppler radar for changing things. Tornado warnings are much more precise these days, and I can’t remember the last time a tornado or severe thunderstorm took my town by surprise. So these days when I see this, as I do several times each spring, I usually know what the weather is and I can enjoy it. It’s beautiful, but in a very weird way.
