Extreme Weather Shelter and Scoop Stove

To me, extreme weather can be several things. Wind in the form of socking the cold right thru you or snapping off branches and them falling on you. rain can beat down your tarp or tent and even wash the ground out from under you in extreme circumstances. This is the shelter I use in those conditions to get a good nights sleep. It got kinda dark when I tried to show the scoop stove at the end. I may have to show more of it in another video.

Im still getting comments regarding why didn't you do this, why did you do this or that, why carry rope, why not a hammock, why not a tent. Read the title, this is for extreme weather. The idea behind this and especially the rope barrier is an attempt to stop falling branches and debris when in a wooded area. Also very handy for if mild flooding hits your campsite overnight. If you don't like my methods of doing things then just don't do what I do. EDITED 2019 = I guess Ive gotten at least 300 comments on this being a bear burrito. Whats folks don't understand or even comprehend is you are no safer from bears in a hammock or a tent. Gee, will the fabric of a hammock magically protect you?

This is for those who think something like this is easy. Here is a link to a group of people who tried to survive one night with what was in a pilots survival kit. I was amazed at how unprepared most of them were. They are up in BC and it is cold and there is snow on the ground, so practice with you have and then practice some more in all types of weather - there were people present who would take them out if they couldn't make it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8hkiKueudzPpaM.html

Some people absolutely refuse to listen! That's why they don't make it in any extreme situation; in the wild, or in the city. Just tell them to watch the video again, and if they're not sure of something, back up and replay a section. If they aren't willing to pay attention, they aren't worth your time. Thanks for your efforts!!!🌊💜🌊💜🌊💜🌊

This is similar to what they taught us in the US Army infantry, except the two support branches you lashed to the trees was simply made of rope. Nice design and video. We once had to dig a fast bomb shelter to protect ourselves from a hurricane with tornados. The holes included multiple upside down A-frame structures side by side similar to the trenches in WWI so we had a flat area to lay on, and an area underneath to collect the water. Numerous trees fell on our shelters, but we had minimal injuries (scratches). Keep thinking and inventing!

Good job James! I'm glad you explained the principals for beginners. Getting your shelter off the ground, creating a dead air space below your bed, dealing with condensation with the Moving Blanket(It also acts as insulation). Ending with a hot cup of coffee is brilliant! A hot meal or beverage is great for Moral, it gives a feeling of normalacy and even can feel like a real luxury in the wild. Thanks to you and your Dad!

I'm a New Yorker, and I don't know where this guy's from. But he's a natural engineering genius. @@Reallybigmonkey1 funny what one learns watching YT. I'm literally terrified of spiders and snakes. So regardless of the season I always have my boots in my sleeping bag or in a sealable bag outside of my sleeping bag. I know it's over kill but it beats me running from ANY spiders OR snakes! LOL

Back in pioneer days they made similar frames to put inside their cabins to sleep on. However, because of the poor quality of rope, you had to re-tie the ropes each day. (Literally making your bed each day.) And that's where the saying "sleep tight" came from. Because if a knot was to slip or the rope was to break, you'd end up on the floor. Thanks for the video. Sleep tight all y'all. xoxo from Arizona.

While they did have rope supported mattresses, that is not the origin of the phrase. "Tight", means "soundly, well"-and has since Shakespearean days. This is just like how people say "SOS" stands for "save our ship/save our souls", when it actually has no meaning at all, and was picked because its easy to remember

Excellent. The best part is its all made of some pretty basic stuff, and is adaptable to all kinds of conditions. Add a space blanket, and you've got extreme cold weather shelter, clothes line so clothing can be dried (freeze dried if necessary) etc. Adaptability and multi-functionality, just like the scoop stove. Very well done.

Great video with a lot of good ideas. Most negative comments on KZfaq should be ignored as very few offer any real instruction - there are a lot of viewers who are insecure and they love to boost their egos by criticizing what others do. That dead air space under your mattress is quite brilliant. Something else ppl forget, even in extreme conditions, we sweat a little in our sleep. Humidity & dew often covers everything. The blanket absorbs the damp keeping the body warmer. Nice job. I'd have to keep a triangle flap near the head end open & sew myself in. I couldn't enter otherwise, maybe crawling in headfirst might be interesting.

Very nice. I always set up my little mountian climber tent, and wrap my ten by twenty tarp around it, and stake it down. I will try this and see how I like it, if I ever go without my dog. When I wrap my tarp around my tiny tent though, the snow covers it and helps insulate it, and my dog gets in my double sleeping bag because she's spoiled, and helps keep me warm. Also, I haul my stuff in a good size Step Two kid's wagon in summer, and a five ft. sled in winter. I guess I'm spoiled too, I take alot of stuff this way for a week at a time, including fishing stuff. Excellent video, new subscriber.

You can drink all the coffee you want, just bring in a pee bottle like we do in cold Norther Canadian winter camping. last thing we want to do is crawl out of a warm tent or shelter for a pee so we use an empty water sport drink bottle then water a tree with it in the morning.

In today's society with social media everybody know a better way, everybody bitches about everything. I think you did a good job, you stayed busy, you were prepared, you did it your way and it works. Looks like a good time out for you and dad, can't get any better than that. Thankyou for the information, very cool. And showed every one some different products that work. Much respect my brother.

Awesome video!! You are certainly correct in saying many youngsters need to learn how to roughneck it when there's no comforts. It's about the unexpected events that you should learn to cope with. Many thanks for the video and your time.

Enjoyable video...I like the little stand stove, for quick heating simple stuff off the ground. Thats definitely a young fellas shelter tho. Maybe a step to get in and a pee hole, and I would use it lol..keep up the great ideas.

you could get a Transmission Fluid Funnel from the dollar store or auto parts store, use it through a little pee hole, and zap! there ya go. of course you would have to pack it in your back pack with sternum strap, or just have an available one stashed in Widowmaker Woods. RBM, you have a great channel, and your manifold skills place you in the multi-talented category. Safe camping!

All good ideas. When in the wilderness we don't usually carry handy metal clips. Clips can be easily made by taking a green branch and splitting it a bit. spread the cut and capture your tarp with those.

One other thought. This is really a pretty strong structure not given to much sag like a hammock. A foot off of the ground would be plenty high, easier to get in/out of, and not so affected by ground wind........height depending, of course on snow fall.
