I've now watched many of your videos. My overall impression is that your "Guided by Experience" logo is well justified. You covey your views and skills in a concise, honest and educational manner which reach not only the more experienced but also those that aspire to same. Good, well thought out Self videoing with Petra on the move must be difficult enough. Filming in the conditions you face must be much harder and adds another excellent skill to your bow. You and Petra offer a refreshing relief at these times and offer a glimpse to better days ahead for us all. Much appreciated. Thanks to you both.

Hiya Interlinga. Yes I see the Anjan3 weighs in at only 1.9kg (I was looking at 1.7kg Niak but vestibule reportedly heavily compromised). I have a folding Brompton bike. Would it fit comfortably in the vestibule do you think without preventing easy access/cooking? It’s 55x25cm and stands 60cm tall. Cheers!

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 - I think all of the Hillebergs are made to a standard to sustain pretty much anything - that's what sets them apart I guess. Just some SLIGHTLY less than others. They are a level up, those tents. In a category of their own, in truth. The relationship between man and dog is truly special. Many think we humans wouldn't be where we are without them and I tend to agree.

Shamus, Finally had the chance to give the Anjan 2 a proper trial. It’s mid November and I just spent 4 nights in Death Valley National Park at a 5000 ft (1500m) altitude. ~65 F (18 C) during day, 40 F (4.5 C) during night. One day of fairly high winds. The Anjan 2 was a comfortable nest to snuggle into after sunset! Proud to have such a fine tent.

Really enjoyed this video, my daughters and I (10 and 13) were discussing the wind and how much we would have rather been in your tent than ours as we have just got back from a couple nights camping and pitched our Vango Midas 600 Thursday and spent the night listening to the roaring of those 50mph winds as they battered our tent (along with 3 hours of lightening and rain), I lay with my legs out my bag ready to drag the girls out if it took off or collapsed but apart from all the guy ropes coming out (which I replaced at 0330) it stayed put! No sleep and a good experience for them though 😂 Enjoyed your stories too, gorgeous dogs. 😊

Loved this! Learned a lot and super enjoyed. Big hug to Petra, please. Watching you put up that tent in that wind reminded me of the ten summers I spent in South Dakota. Winds aplenty. I had a Eureka Expedition tent that was phenomenal. I saw many tents destroyed out there, in the wind and storms (which often included hail). That tent of mine was unscathed. The only I had to eventually replace was the sun damaged rain fly. No biggie at all.

Wandering Jay - sound advice :) That’s really one of the key signatures of a 4 season tent, being able to live in it. The Unna has some great space, but with a dog the vestibule is a must for me. As you know, peeling back the inner on an Unna is a great way to make the best of the space you have.

Great video of really windy conditions. Hilleberg suggest it's best to pitch with the higher end (doorway) into the wind rather than tail into the wind. This avoids the outer and inner being blown into contact with each other which is not great in rainy conditions. It is though amazing how well a two pole tent laughs in the face of such high winds.

We could call them reviews, but truly they are thoughts from my perspective and what suits me. I’ve always had quality tents, their cost has gone through the roof lately and a careful judgement had to be weighed before making a purchase. If you get it right, then you have a tent for a decade or possibly two. Next clear chance I get, I’ll do this 👌 Thanks for commenting 😊

Hi Shamus, I am really curious about this ventilation design. I imagine it works wonders with a breeze going on, but have some reservations about using it in the woods where there's generally not a lot of wind. I feel like the lack of a topvent could turn this into a bit of a condensation nightmare. Any thoughts? Loved the husky story :)
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, sorry for the late reply. This tent breathes well, it has a catenary cut to the bottom of the fly, the top zip of the door can be unzipped in dry weather as well. But you're quite right, without air movement condensation can be a problem with any tent. My Hilleberg Soulo has a top vent, but I've never found top vents that helpful to be honest.

I appreciate the quality of the Hilleberg line, it's given that they use top quality materials and construction. However I've never been convinced by the tunnel design- especially in winds like you experienced. A geodesic/ crossed over pole system seems to give far better support to me. I'm a big Quasar fan which I've used in horrendous conditions for many years. I'd be interested in how you find this tent copes over time.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, Derek. You can't beat the stability of a geodesic, I wouldn't subject this tent to these condition normally, in fact you wouldn't be able to sleep with that about of noise. I've had both the Quasar and the Ultra Quasar - The difficulty is the gain in not only weight, but pack size for one person to carry, although I did enjoy having an opening at both ends 👍
@Super.Quasar
@Super.Quasar 3 жыл бұрын
Agree entirely. I’m on my 3rd Super Quasar, one to my son, one for a Nammatj 3GT and later a Keron 4. In the end I’m back with a Super Quasar. The noise of the tunnel tents is near unbearable. Often, I’ve wondered what’s causing the din and the cracking sound. Always near silent in a Super Quasar and the space is much more useable.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
@@Super.Quasar - That was only mind last night - the 'crack' is odd... I slept in the Anjan 2 last night in 20 - 30mph winds and heavy snow at times, once the snow had settled on and around the tent it naturally muted all noise. I find the sound quite comforting, but I can understand why it would irritate other people 😊
@fisheea
@fisheea 3 жыл бұрын
The wind noise is far less prominent in their red/black label lines, which do not have the mentioned cut, though I do tend to bring a pair of earplugs in my Kaitum 2 in case conditions get really hairy. (Also really depends on how proficient you are at pitching the things. I've woken up from the sound from the MSR next to me trying to take off while I hadn't set up all the guy lines on the Kaitum yet). So far I've avoided dome designs and the like as they seem to struggle to create a design in which the fly is taut all the way down to the ground, and are almost always heavier than their tunnel counterparts. Should I reconsider?

Thanks for posting this. On the Hilleberg site they recommend pitching door end into the wind, primarily to prevent wind flattening the rear end fly being pushed against the inner and resulting in potential water penetration. Seems like a good idea... apart from when you would normally open the door of the porch to cook. Thoughts?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
John Bunyan - That’s really interesting, they’re experts at this. My thoughts are: 1. I’ve never pitched with a doorway into the wind with any other tent. 2. The rear may collapse a little - you can see from my video that it’s didn’t affect the inner space too much. It appears to be more aerodynamic with the lower end into the wind. I would have thought this would help with wind shedding. 3. In this country, wind often comes with heavy rain. If you vent or open a door facing the wind, then you have no ‘leeward’ shelter and your facing the precipitation. 4. With a catenary cut (lifted curve) fly sheet, a vestibule facing the wind is going to be very draughty - and with a mesh only inner door? Mmmm, they’re the experts... but it’s not for me. 😊

@johnb0101 3 жыл бұрын
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Yeah, I agree with all your points, with my experience I'd pitch it the way you did. Nearly as though Hilleberg are admitting fly/inner contact at the rear is an issue?... did it rain much in that wind?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
John Bunyan - sorry, yes I see your point. It rained quite heavily at one point, but not prolonged. The inner didn’t wet and I think separation was maintained between inner and outer. I’ve had a Nallo 2 and always pitched it this way without it wetting. I also have an Akto and would agree that the two skins ‘compress’ and meet at the windward end - that’s a 4 season tent... by opening the fly vent, air enters and creates a gap between the two layers. If Hilleberg have ‘a problem’ I would suggest that it’s one of transparency and honesty (and knowledge of their products) because I’m sure all other tunnel tents would potentially have the same issue, it’s just Hilleberg say it out loud 😊 I bought a crux tent about 12 years ago, pitched it and realised that the rear vent, as advertised, was missing. I telephoned the owner of the company who stated that the vent should be there, went and looked at some recent stock and then came back to the phone and admitted that the Chinese factory had removed one of the vents from the design and not bothered to tell him! I got a refund. Anyway, I’m digressing - now you’ve told me this, I’m going to have to go and pitch in some really heavy wind and rain and look, I suspect that if it were prolonged then there may be a damp issue - but there’s a ‘play off’ with how much wind you can reasonably tolerate at the vestibule opening. Hilleberg have a video of pitching a tent with a wind machine, but they don’t then open an entrance or attempt to cook in the vestibule... Or for that matter try and sleep with the wind battering at the head end. Very interesting, more ‘play time’ necessary I think 😂

John Bunyan - If it’s a worry then it would always ‘niggle’ you. You need to go with what you’re comfortable with. I’ve had plenty of geodesic tents Terra Nova and Hilleberg were all were solid, but the penalty was weight and pack size. This Anjan just squishes down to next to no size... The tunnel vs geodesic discussion is like apples and bananas, they’re both fruit, both nutritious, I like both, but I have to make a choice on which one I want in my packed lunch for the day 😂

Hi Shamus, I am looking for another tent, something that will cope with British winters. Problem is my budget is about 200$, can you recommend some tents you feel are good for winter around that price. I can go up a bit, cheers Jon.

Hi Jon. Thanks for asking, but I really don't do 'recommendations' My whole this is centred on "what I do, in the places that I go, with the stuff that I've got' 😊 As an aside though: Many people have found the Luxe Hex Peak v4a (from backbackinglight.co.uk) a very good 'hex tent' - it's around £194 and has a lot of living space, it has to be seam sealed - a pole is additional (£35). More guys / anchor points can be added for stability - it may be of interest 😊🐶👍

@thewestonfront 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shamus - which way around would you pitch this tent vs. the wind - tail into the wind, or door into the wind? I can see advantages of both but would probably come down on the side of tail to the wind so that you can get in and out without any rain (if there is any) being driven into the entrance and because the tail end is lower. What's the expert view?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 жыл бұрын
I guess the expert view is that of Hilleberg, they recommend head to wind. I understand their reasoning, because they say the fly can be pushed into contact with the inner at the rear. I’ve never personally found this and don’t really want to open a door into 50mph winds. Does that make sense?

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 hmm, now thinking the Niak probably not very practical as vestibule is tiny and can’t cook in it! Having watched your video again the Anjan’s space for weight is great. I don’t recall if I used an anemometer to measure wind speed that day, but I do have nearly 30 years experience as a meteorological observer, so the gusts would have been close to it. I don’t believe the Anjan is designed for that sort of punishment (and wouldn’t survive long term) to be honest, but it was fun.
