this video may be kind of disappointing as you might've expected a bright flash, or an explosion, some sort of crater, but i dont think ksp has asteroids crash intentionally, i think this is just a rare event, i mean what are the chances out of the randomly spawned asteroids, this specific one is in perfect orbit and has perfect timing to be on a direct encounter with kerbin, on trajectory to smash into it, crazy!

aw cool mate, i didn’t know it was that rare like cause i’ve definitely seen it happen before in a save, but i’ve had the game since 1.0.1

No flash needed, big splash wanted though

would it be possible to fly to the impact area to watch the entry from a plane or would the physics engine nuke the asteroid as soon as it touches the atmosphere?

I reckon it would unload from the simulation

If you could somehow meet it in space and go down with it, then I think it would work

It the video the asteroid got deleted by the game but if you manage to intercept the asteroid before it enters atmosphere and stay in the 2km radius of it or use a grabbing unit to attach yourself to the asteroid the game would simulate the physics and you will be able to see it burning in the atmosphere and colliding with the ground.

yeah i think you just have to be in like a 200 meter radius for the physics to apply of it actually going down and touching the ocean, i've seen videos of people deorbiting some asteroids so i know it'd be possible

the way the atmosphere changes from recognizably our sky to outer space is really fascinating

not to be a buzzkill but it's actually not very rare. Track enough asteroids in the tracking station and half of them will eventually hit something or glitch into an orbit.
