Restoration of a VERY rare VARTA iron from 1900s. It was buried in the ground for a long time.I wanted to iron my shirts with a historical iron.So I decided to start this restoration project.

It is called mica, it looks a bit like glass it was used in the doors of wood stoves at the turn of the century, it resists high temp that would break glass.

It was probably found buried in the ground somewhere or in a dump. Back in the late 19th or very early 20th century, people used to bury their old broken junk, ie, pots, pans, rugs, utensils, in the ground. I have found such things where I used to live as it used to be farmland before it was developed into city neighborhoods.

@@AntiqueVintageRestoratioNs good point but to be honest even that guy would had to have said it was trash. You did the impossible and I love it. Pieces like that was made to last a lifetime. Now the new stuff is just junk. No one takes pride in what they make unless it is the small business owners that make it by hand. Those are the ones I seek out, sometimes quality is worth the extra price because it will be around a long time instead of a few months.

@@Julmaa87 Really? Pray tell, how do you get rust to form like that "artificially"?
@TheImpossiBelle
@TheImpossiBelle 18 күн бұрын
@@Khrystyna853I’m not going to judge the authenticity of the channel, but the rusting is the easy part, plenty of guides on how to do it online. What you can’t easily fake is *pitting*, where the rust has eaten away at the metal. Now obviously there is some pitting on the iron, but it’s fairly superficial compared to the amount of crap that was caked on it. There are plenty of restoration videos where the item isn’t half as rusty as this but has some severe pitting that either requires filler or adding more material via welding.
@Khrystyna853
@Khrystyna853 18 күн бұрын
@@TheImpossiBelle And then, there are plenty of instances in real life, where I, for example, have actually personally found old items in barns with this amount of rust on them, where the rust had initially formed so quickly that it sealed the item inside it, thereby preventing a lot of the pitting. Believe me, there are enough compromised items out there that deserve restoration, that people do not have to fake it. They'd still have to do the same amount of work to restore the piece, anyway - which is really the point. The energy and care of the restorer tells the true tale of their respect for old things, and how satisfying the process is when the restoration is successful. Most restorers would not take the chance of ruining an antique by deliberately compromising it. But, some people are cynical and miserable, and just want to hurt others with a crass comment, like the one above. Being an artist and restorer, I take it a bit personally. It's just too bad that some people aren't happy unless they've spoiled things for others...

I am curious about the layer of mica (looked like glass) that was within the iron. It doesn't seem like you addressed replacing it. It seems it's used because it conducts heat but insulates against electricity. Seems important considering all the metal in the iron. Did you consider replacing it but couldn't find a source?

I've been collecting and restoring very early electrical gadgets from toasters, waffle irons, irons, curling rods etc. as a hobby for a while now from the 1910's to the 1920s. I didn't see any heating elements in the iron so how can it work? If you try plugging it in, you're going to get one hell of a nasty shock or trip the circuit breakers. 😳😁

I didn't know what it was before reading the title! It looks like a statue of a mounted horse 😂. What a find and it still works ❤. Think of the hours and hours of the woman who held it. All her thoughts and feelings are in it. Her soul.

Not asbestos, that's mica. And it's not a heating element, it's a mineral used for electric and heat solation. Actually, but removing it, you're risking an electric shock if touching the metal. And it really looks like that with thin frail layers. It's a beautiful mineral actually. Look it up 😉

The operative word here is "almost" impossible. I didn't even know that such a thing could be done. It actually works. You know your stuff. I bet it just comes from tinkering around with stuff. You have a natural ability to fix things. Some basic knowledge of mechanics is all you need. You worked with materials that were not safe for people to be around and mess with. But essential. I can't believe it works!

This nice comment made me very happy. Thank you very much for watching and liking the video. I love to tamper with things and bring them back to life. Of course, I learn as I do. I still have many shortcomings. I hope I will complete my materials as soon as possible. I will take your warning into account, thank you very much, my friend.💜💜💜💜💜
