How to use a Kong Dog Toy so your dog will stay HAPPY and BUSY! Dogs need the right size Kong and they need the right skill level for their ability. Puppies and dogs who are new to using a Kong need the food to come out easily so they can learn that the Kong is about food. More experienced dogs will benefit from making it harder for the food to come out so they stay busy longer. We will show you how to keep new & experienced dogs happily engaged with their Kong!
This video will help you make sure you have a good size for your dog and will give you stuffing ideas that increase in difficulty from super easy to super hard.
Kongs help satisfy your dog's need to hunt and provide enrichment.
Safety Note about Peanut Butter: Some peanut butter containing artificial sweeteners such as XYLITOL can be deadly for dogs. Please review the ingredients of any peanut butter you give your dog to insure that it does NOT contain XYLITOL.

Thanks for your video. I've seen others put meat in a Kong and then freeze it, but my dog just isn't interested in that. Now I get it, starting with something that hard might make him lose interest and confidence right away. I've decided to go buy a jar of peanut butter today!

Think of Kongs as a puzzle. Start easy with lots of quick success for your dog. GRADUALLY, make it more challenging. Be sure he/she likes peanutbutter. (Not all dogs do!) Also, you can use cream cheese, wet dog food, anything that will stick inside. Let me know how it goes.

Had him 6 days and he can already sit, paw, leave it is hit or miss, started him crate training yesterday and leash training today, he doesn’t like the leash much yet but loves the crate to play in with some positive reinforcement! Ima try a Long to keep him busy as he’s hyper and a biter!

If you don't mind buying more than one, you could start with a medium size Kong that your pup migh learn to enjoy easier than a super chewer one. Remember, make it easy for your puppy to get the food out etc to create a positive association with the toy. Good luck.

@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog 8 ай бұрын
The color of the kong determines how soft or hard it is. Puppy Kongs tend to be small (obviously) and light blue or pink and soft. You can certainly start with these, but as the puppy grows be sure to adjust the size of the kong.

You said not to get the puppy blue/pink Kong if you have a lab puppy... Well I have a Golden Mountain puppy which I guess might be similar to a lab pup? and Im wondering what size I should get??? Shes 3 months, 26 lbs! I went and bought the largest puppy kong they had because I got scared the bigger "classic" ones would be too hard on my puppy teeth.

@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog Жыл бұрын
Laura, there is no set time, it really depends on your dog's ability to work for food. If he's easily frustrated introduce the peanutbutter (ore cream cheese) gradually. Once he's a champ, freeze them and/or put in other boxes. Have fun with it.

My puppy has been having a hard time eating his hard food once he came but at breeders house he ate it fine, do you think using a kong will help him to eat more? If i add peanut butter or something? I want him on a schedule also but he never eats when I put the food out. So i have been letting him approach his food whenever (which is not good)
@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog Жыл бұрын
Shanttal, depending on the age of your puppy, you'll have to be careful what you "stuff" it with. You don't want to upset the pup's tummy. Wet dog food works, whipped cream cheese used lightly. A kong adds a level of challenge because we are asking the dog/puppy to use his brain to solve the puzzle. I would leave the food availabel to the puppy for 15-20 mintes at the longest, then pick it up until the next feeding. Dogs will not starve themselves.
@ambitiousbeauty1013

My dog is the same way. I let his hard food soak in water to get soft. I let it soak in a big mixing bowl. Then I drain it and smash it up with a potato smasher. Hard food makes my dog throw up. He's been doing fine with his food being soaked in water and made soft. I keep it in a big container or Ziploc bag in the fridge.

How do you handle Kong feeding if you have 2 dogs? Do they need to be separated or do you find if they each have their own that they focus on theirs?
@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog Жыл бұрын
This will depend on your individual dog's personality. I always separate our dogs just so each dog can enoy their Kong without worry of competition and then I know how much each dog has eaten. Good for you for feeding out of a kong.

What about the cleaning of the Kong? How often, best ways??

Great video, I always thought a dog should never be left in a crate, other than when in transit or being transported. Doesn't a crate cause anxiety, being trapped in a crate, if there's a break in, fire or just someone knocking on your door and your dog feels trapped in a small cage ? I can understand sometimes if you're home with the dog and you have guests, who maybe scared of dogs, or allergic to dog hairs, but if you live alone & something happens ie..accident or long delay, they can't even get to help themselves to water or food, it may all seem a bit pessimistic, but going out leaving a dog behind, helplessly in a small cage/crate, is awful in my opinion and I just wouldn't do it. People may say yeah but my dog chews the house up, then even an outdoor kennel or shed to go in for shelter if it rains is better in an enclosed secure gated or fenced back garden. Just saying, no offence meant, maybe you can tell me different, but that's always been my take on these things. Thankyou for the video.

Glad you liked the video. Crate use is a personal decision and clearly you have a negative association with leaving a dog crated in the house. Id prefer my dog be inside and crated than outside...personal choice. Some dogs have anxiety about being left alone and others can be claustrophobic. Personal choice. No right or wrong.

I totally agree, dog proof your house instead, imagine going several hours for work and then leaving your dog locked in a tiny, prison create without nothing to do for several hours, just torture and animal abuse (I think it's even illegal where I live). Of course good to train your dog to have a special area, like a crate as example but that's different from locking them up all alone for several hours.

Is it still fine if my 8 week old puppy has regular small kong instead of a puppy kong?
@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog 2 жыл бұрын
Aiden, Absolutely. Two safety issues. 1. Be sure the Kong won't be a choking hazard. Sometimes dog owners buy a small puppy kong, but never throw it out and replace with a larger kong even when their dog is full grown. 2. A larger kong will allow you to stuff it with more yummy food!

Good ideas and we use these techniques with our dogs (Retrievers) - but DO NOT use meatballs or any seasoned meats that you'd serve to humans. Also - ensure that peanut butter with artificial sweeteners is NOT used. Xylitol is especially harmful for dogs. The best is organic unsweetened peanut butter. We stuff the kong with kibble and use a canned dog food pate' style or baked chicken with NO seasoning. You can also buy the refrigerated tubes of dog food as well and mix in the dry kibble. Don't give your dogs processed and seasoned crap from the frozen food section. Seasoned meats intended for human consumption should not be use.
@EverythingDog
@EverythingDog Жыл бұрын
P. Roth, agree partially. Xylitol is dangerous for dogs and pet parents need to read labels. However, refrigerated tubes of dog food is one of the worst things for your dog. The shelf life is SO LONG....makes you wonder ya' know about what's in it? Kibble for that matter is so far away from its natural source I could argue that it's horrible too.... In reality, the best food for humans and dogs is any food that actually looks like food and has little to no processing. So stuff your dog's toys with fresh fruits, veggies, and meats with a little peanut butter or cream cheese (yes also processed) to hold it all together. Thanks for the comment.

Daniel, I get that. How about cream cheese? Of freeze the Kong and don't put so much in that is comes out before the dog can eat it. I use a think layer of PNButter, then add kibble or other dry treats and have it stick in the Peanut butter. Good luck.
