Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin has covered Some of the most notorious figures in U.S. history. Now, in his book “Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of RIght-Wing Extremism,” Toobin takes on the man behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Toobin puts the incident into historical context by tracing the roots of McVeigh’s actions from the standoff at Ruby Ridge, to President Clinton’s ban on assault weapons, and all the way through the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. In this episode of Next Question, he tells Katie, “That's why I wrote Homegrown to show that [McVeigh] was not an aberration. And that his legacy lives on in both people and ideas that are persistent to this day.”

First of all thank you thank you both for this information. It's so important to understand how people are radicalized. We need more discussion around extremism. Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and right wing media have served as the gateway drug.
@nonyabizness.original

i don't know if i agree with your "gateway drug" analogy. that has the look and logic of radicalized rightwing extremists being made from unsuspecting, duped regular folk. if there was a gateway drug here, i see it being the generational, simmering racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, supremist mindset of a substantial portion of american white, mostly men, who have always been here, glowing with suppressed rage, hate and thwarted entitlement. i think the extreme rightwing media and pols have (again-- this is not new to america) taken advantage of trump's rise to fan and fuel the embers of what has always been burning. the difference right now is not that there are suddenly people with extremist views-- the difference is that they have been empowered, emboldened, set free to express and act on those views.

McVeigh drove all over the country on the Interstate system and other federal-aid highways. It's sad and ironic that he was responsible for the murder of several employees of the Federal Highway Administration of the US Department of the Transportation, the agency overseeing and funding those roads and highways.

yes, right-wingers are infinitely full of shit, they say they are anti-big-government but they LOOOVE government as long as its enforcing THEIR standards and practices on the rest of us. Which is what they complain about with dems and "Libs". I cant stand them. The feeling is mutual I'm sure. its just a sad situation in this country especially.

Hi Katie, Great interview. I well remember the days of Rush Limbo, early Laura Ingram, and other Right Wing talk radio. And they truly were the Tucker Carlsons, and present day Laura Ingram, and Sean Hannitty of today. So yes, it's no wonder so many people did crazy horrible things even back then. And yes again, newt Gingrich was a picture of hate for any Dem. That's why I have heard a lot of this crap before. It's disgusting.

My dad was an alt right, Barry Goldwater Republican. He was also extremely hateful, chronically angry and prejudiced. He died in 2001, but I remember that he was just so out of control angry, despite having a masters degree, a very stable career and a living wage. He resented paying taxes and he just was never happy, no matter what. He was extremely intelligent, alcoholic and violent. He was so weird, and I hear the same things coming out of alt right conservatives now that I heard him say. He hated the Clinton family with a passion. Alt right conservatives scare the hell out of me, they have nothing to contribute but fear and loathing.
