I have probably been watching Trevor Noah regularly since his book, born a crime, came out. He has been a source of joy and smiles during the pandemic, but before tonight I had never seen the segment on knickers the cow. My life is so much better now.

I don't know. If you don't like both candidates a direct tax on the citizens hardly sounds like an appropriate solution. The US is nowhere near perfect, but that system doesn't sound any less polarizing.

@@onurcradibleable If you Vote for something or someone else. All that really means is: "They have no chance of winning, but I want to keep the $20, so here goes." But it is Brilliant from a Governing standpoint to make your citizens pay for it directly. You choose not to take part, therefore you line the coffers of the Government whom you don't support, as proven by your not showing up. In that sense, the ones who don't vote contribute to Government the most, and that's somewhat hilarious. In essence- You don't care? That's alright by us, mate. Just give us $20 and we'll work it out ourselves.

The fine for not voting at Federal election is AUD$20 but for the New South Wales (NSW) state election it is AUD$55.

We used to have a draft. Every male American registered with selective service when they turned 18. If we could constitutionally draft people, we can also have compulsory voting. We already have compulsory schooling. I don't see the problem. A citizen has duties, voting is one of them. Why? To KEEP our freedoms, plural. Not everything is allowed to be one of those freedoms. That's why we have laws. The only purpose of law is to restrict our free expressions, those that infringe on other's freedoms.

For all the UK's faults getting tested for covid was crazy easy. Booked a PCR test 2hr before taking it at 5:30pm and had the results by 8:30am the next day via text.

funny thing is that cow isn't all that big. It is surrounded by a different type that is smaller by nature which makes it look bigger than it actually is. Compared to other ones of its same type, it was pretty average. Several places did a follow up story to that one a few weeks later.

Australian voters were so checked out that they often just checked off the first name on the list. Politicians started changing their names to come first alphabetically so they had to randomize the order each candidate appeares on each ballot!

I somewhat like the idea of mandatory voting. It seems to add legitimacy, but also remove it somewhat. If your "leaders" are pre-selected, and you *HAVE* to choose one of them.. Seems like it'd be more or less self perpetuating. What do you do if you don't like the candidates? Elect someone you don't like, or pay for it out of pocket? That hardly sounds like democracy, either.

Hey! I’m Australian and to clarify, no one can actually make us vote. The mandatory part is that you must present yourself to a voting location and get your name ticked off. What you do with your ballot from that point is up to you. Some people who don’t want to vote just scribble on it, some don’t put the ballot paper in the box, some don’t even take the paper. But the reason we have such high turn out is because now that you’ve made people get up, drive to a voting place, wait it line, tick their name off they’re like ‘well I may as well just vote while I’m here’. It gets a vote from the people who wouldn’t have voted out of laziness or apathy, but for people who feel really strongly about not voting they don’t actually have to.
