The tip is about an inch long, of the grease gun is adjustable, hold the flex line with one hand and turn the tip to the left, insert the tip on to the zerk fitting, tighten the tip to the right a couple of turns, then tug to make sure it stays on, pump away, when removing, turn the tip left enough and it pop off the zerk fitting, on to the next wheel.

you are not alone, after 15 years being out of travel trailer we are back, it's never to late to start again. A lot of things has changed, so many more your tube people with a well of information. And very few in conflict. However, do not watch these video 's and think its all this easy. for if you have not done it yourself, it hardly ever goes as easy as the video. you have to try and learn by trial and era. But , keep on going, it will come together,

Great video! I never thought about checking the torque on the U bolts holding the axle. That's the next thing I'm going to check. I just purchased one of those ramps that you drive one tire up on and the other hangs. Best $50 I ever spent. No more having to get bottle jacks, pieces of 2 x 4's and having to pump the jack. Just drive one tire up and the other hangs. Easy to do the greasing of the bearings, plus changing a tire.

Hi Guys, enjoyed your video and I am impressed. I do however cringe when I see a jack under the axle to jack the RV up. In my Dexter owners manual it says never place a jack anywhere under the axle for lifting. Suggestion is to place the bottle jack under the RV frame to safely raise it up and not the axle. Save travels

I have EZ-Lube axles on my trailer, but if you look around on RV forums you will find they are somewhat controversial, not always working as advertised. Really, one does need to go all the way and pul not only the wheel but the wheel drum as well....maybe not every time, but YMMV. That allows an inspection of the brake linings, removal of brake dust (wear a mask for that), and a check of the electromagnet that makes them work. You will also get a chance to inspect the bearings and cups (inner and outer), espcially if you pull the grease seal on the back side of the axle bore. When you find worn parts, gettng replacements is easy, and the work to complete the job(s) is not overly difficult if you pay attention. The Dexter Manual for your axle has all the details, and it is online for download.

Love your entertaining videos! I'm no expert, but I've read you can pump too much grease in the wheel bearings so it damages the inner seal and then grease enters into the brake drum. At that point, the brake shoes won't work properly. Keep the videos coming and happy trails.

Using the EZ Lube system is so easy; even a caveman can do it. Well, obviously, I'm not as smart as a caveman : ) I Just finished completing the job on both my axles. First off, you're not kidding about the mess. I purchased a box of 300 shop towels and think I went through 100 or more. My grease gun wouldn't prime, so I had the bright idea to unscrew the main hose (bad idea, as that was the moment it decided to let loose). Once that fiasco was cleaned up (and I ran to buy more tubes), the rest of the job went fairly well. Would I do it again? Most certainly. When I initially turned the wheel before applying new grease, the bearings sounded like a ticked-off banshee. Now they're as smooth as velvet. I appreciate your video as you're honest with the process showing both the good and bad. Looking forward to more maintenance tips.

At some point you will have to remove the brake drums to inspect the bearings there is a large nut washer and cotter pin to inspect alsounder that cap. until then you should grab the tire @ the top and bottom and check for slack in the bearings. and use high temp wheel bearing grease! check your grease and make sure it is a high enough temp so it does not turn to liquid and leak through the seal. and the "zerk" you can call it a grease fitting too!

Dexter Axle recommends jacking up a trailer on the trailer frame, not on the axle or suspension system. To avoid damaging the trailer, do not place the jack on the axle. Instead, place the jack under the frame of the trailer or at a specified jack point on the side that has the flat tire. For added stability, add a flat piece of wood under the jack.

Noticed you didn't lube the shaclel bushings, i'm guessing their plain plastic or the infamous Lipert never fsil which is a misnomer if their ever was one IMHO. The industry stsndard shackle hangers are 1/4" plate painted mild steel which will rust and wollow out from side loading when manuevering at low speed and friction from shock loading on our deferred maintenance highway system. Suggest you look into a set of Morryde (no affiliation) HD wet bolt shacles which use 1/2' galvanized steel plates for hangers with drilled bolts with zerc fittings and bronze bushings which you lube when doing your wheel bearings. Have used these on all 5 of my camping trlrs with no failures in 30 yrs of use.

I (Dave) am an expert (35+ years) for calibration of torque wrenches. ALWAYS set clicker torque wrenches to the minimum setting when not in use. Those tools have an internal spring that develops a "memory" when kept compressed for an extended period of time. You did not calibrate the wrench, you set it to the desired torque value. Calibration requires some sort of device (torque cell) to measure the torque that the tool applies when it "clicks" at various settings. Hope that helps and safe travels!

@@TilFurtherNotice you are welcome. Also, when applying the torque: do it in a "star pattern", a few steps / passes at each nut, and apply torque slow and steady (no quick jerking movements). For example, assune a final torque of 100 FTLBS: first pass for ALL nuts at finger tight, second pass at about 25 to 50 FTLBS, next pass at up to 75 FTLBS, then final pass at 100 FTLBS. Recheck all after the final pass. Sounds like a lot of steps, but that is essentially the process used at the nuclear power plant where I work. Overkill for some maybe, but its your home and bad things can occur if lug nuts are either too loose or too tight.

So "repacking" the bearings once a year is not using the grease zirk or grease fitting. You need to take the innner and outer bearing out and by hand, pack the bearings with new grease. It's much more involved because you have to remove the brakes. What you did should be done, maybe once a quarter and a full repack should be done once a year. JMO!

You can loosen the jaws in the grease zerk female fitting. The end cover can be turned. Use two pairs of pliers. One on that end cover and set below it. Won't take much. Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 turn counterclockwise looking at the end of the fitting. This video shows how tighten it. You want to loosen it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iddpgLGGrd25do0.html

Are you sure you've used the right grease. The grease in your wheel-ends looks redish, which is the high-temp. grease (same as on my trailer wheel-ends. The grease you bought at Harbor Freight (and they are not the right experts to ask about that instead your axle spec. should specify this) is Moly-grease (used for different applications. Theoretically, though, moly does not belong in roller bearings where it will potentially cause the rollers to flat spot from not spinning. I use "Lucas Oil 10005 Red 'N' Tacky Grease - 14 oz.". This is a high temp. grease and it looks like your wheel end uses it too.

You really need to truly repack your bearings. This involves taking the wheels and then the hubs off and pulling the bearings and seals themselves out to inspect and repack. Using the method you used does not really 'repack' them. It just adds grease to the old grease.

As an rv mechanic for more than 25 years. Please don't lube your bearings like that again. Those dexter contraptions have a bad trait of shoving grease past the seal, and contaminating the brake shoes. When you repack wheel bearings you need to take everything apart in order to inspect the brakes and bearings. There is also a preload on the bearings that gets neglected with this method as well. Be sure to grab the wheel and push in and out the top and bottom of the wheel feeling for slop and freeplay. And the maintenance interval should never be a time limit with RVs they simply sit idle for too long. I usually say about 7, to 10 thousand miles between wheel bearing packs. It could take some RV owners a couple of years to reach that. Message me on KZfaq for questions

If you put an entire tube in one wheel you put entirely too much. This is a risky operation you are doing, yes it’s the easy way but it can also backfire on you. Putting that much grease in that way you can potentially blow out the seals in the back and then grease can get on your brakes. The hardest part of the job is jacking up the rv so in my opinion taking the bearing out and manually greasing them is best. You see your bearings and will no if they are still good and it’s almost impossible to over grease them. Using a grease gun should only be for adding a little grease until you can take the bearing completely out.

Scary! Definitely not the preferred method of wheel bearing maintenance. Especially with the amount of grease you pumped in each wheel it may very well have leaked past the rear seal and can compromise your brakes. Although they say you can give the zerks a pump occasionally, the preferred method by all the experts is to pull the wheel and the brake drum and inspect and repack the bearings. How do I know, because I and some of my fellow campers have done what you did and paid the price by ruining our brakes!
