This is awesome. I was the channel V director at the time but we didn't have anyone to direct this (there was lots other stuff going on) so the camps just shot it wild. They dragged me into the edit suite to cut it live because it was chaos. Nearly did my head in but now I see it it back it's totally fantastic... It's doing my head in again watching it. Thanks for posting.... I'm mental now. Hahahaha!

And as someone who comes from a film and television background, I can only imagine how difficult it was to piece this together in a seamless way. This performance is gold. And this is my very favorite performance by my very favorite band. We wouldn't have this without you.

I was there. Mudvanye had just finished a set on the second stage in that tent and the crowd just moved over to where we were and brought that bogan energy across. Later That night though at the main stage a girl was crushed and died when limpbizkit was performing. That ATDI called it was prescient for the tragedy to follow where security and crowd measures were just not effective on a hot day.

The whole attitude of this set screams "band of the moment", hottest thing right now. The arrogance, the music-snobbery, insulting the audience and the people taking photos, (those ignorant paparazzi press vultures!!). I'm not knocking them, it's all very punk rock (or straight-edge punk) but that vibe is so clearly captured on this video. At least that's how it comes across to me. I wasn't there but I remember hearing about it... it's kinda funny what a big thing this set actually was for a little while!

As far as the band's stand against crowd surfing goes - I mean, yeah, it's kind of difficult to control that kind of crowd energy when you're bringing insane amounts of purely awesome energy to the stage. But to their credit, they were used to playing smaller, more intimate, more "underground" shows in which the crowds were more receptive to looking out for each other. In most punk and underground scenes, there's this mutual understanding that everyone in the crowd wants to have fun and express themselves, but not to the detriment of others. (And in a smaller, local show, most of those people know each other to some degree.) I'm pretty sure that I saw in an interview that they take that stance against crowd surfing and moshing for everyone, but particularly because it tends to discourage their female fans from enjoying the show, and standing up front. - Not only because of the injury factor, but also because douchey dudes take advantage of the chaos of a pit and grope women.
@Newwordsforsimone7

I'm still looking for that interview, but here's one where they address the subject of discouraging moshing and crowd surfing, vs their own antics on stage. :kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zp1kga52npPJnXU.htmlm12s

Essentially, ATDI's stance against moshing/slamming and crowdsurfing was the same as Fugazi (a band which they emulated to a certain extent). And you know what? Fair play - it may have been slightly aggrandized at the end, but Cedric was bang on - also seeing as someone had recently died while in a moshpit, it was on him, he felt, to tell the crowd not to ape what everyone else does at shows. Yes, express yourself, but do it in a way that doesn't encroach on other's personal space. And if you're actively out there in the pit to beat people up and cause harm, you're an asshole.

@@NailBombed What personal space? Have you even been to a big show before? Bunch of sweaty hairy guys rocking. This show was a conduit overvolted (I'm not an electrician, forgive the shaky metaphor). Cedric being wired out of his mind, the crowd just being overbearingly jammed, ATDI playing the music that they do. Cedric was very aware that they weren't being marketed with the right ideas in mind. I've been to shows with idiots slam dancing and crowdsurfing without a care for whom they may hurt, and then shows where people dance, express themselves, and pick you up if you get knocked down. There was simply no room for safety, and it's difficult to place blame on a festival crowd in a remote area of the world when the wait for their favorite bands is over. It's difficult to place blame on ATDI for cutting the show short. I'm glad the end result was a legendary performance and a lesson taught.

Well lo and behold they broke up before that free show, and that was that. I moved to SF for college and continued getting deeper into extreme metal (death, black, tech prog) . I have no problem recognizing good music in any genre, and I always kept At The Drive In in my back pocket, so to speak, but I can't help wondering how I would have been different had I been to that show!

I just saw them at Coachella, I didn't know anything about them until then - a great performance! I was surprised though that there wasn't any moshing, then I read up on the Big Day Out story in 2001 and how a girl died in a mosh pit and they didn't like moshing when they were performing. With the type of music they play it is tough to expect the crowd to not mosh - circle pit moshing is fine, I just don't like hardcore dancing.

I've never understood why so many people have a problem with the "no moshing" policies of certain bands. It's just bands trying to look out, man, and if the songs amp you up to the point that you just HAVE to be aggressive, punch yourself in the face repeatedly. You can do this without effecting anyone else (and it will absolutely release the aggression).

especially since a girl was killed in a mosh pit later that day. which means the moshing must have been super violent, so Cedric taking a stand against what he was seeing is admirable. I know they'd been against moshing before and after this, but them just leaving makes sense.

Most people have an issue with it because if you're an aggressive band, expect people to behave aggressively and mosh. If he cant stand moshing in the type of aggressive energetic music he plays. Maybe he needs to consider playing anything other than hard rock or punk, metal, etc.

Same here dude. I stand by it as well. Though in someway, his hindsight was 20/20 because of what happened to that girl when limp bizkit came on later that evening and became infamous and synonymous with crowd crush and concert fuckups. Second to Astroworld
