One would be hard pressed to find a more underrated boxing champion than Ezzard Charles. One of the slickest boxers ever, his reign as Heavyweight Champion 1949-51 was one of the most active, exciting and yet remains in the purgatory of boxing history between the championship years of Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. There's no shortage of footage of Charles online, but much of it is poor quality, or film of his loosing efforts against Marciano and Walcott. Neither of those fights represents Charles at his best.

Vs Rex Layne I
Charles had three fights with heavy hitting contender Rex Layne between 1951 and 1953. Charles lost a decision to Layne in their second fight, and came back to outpoint Layne in their third match, but here in their rarely seen first fight, we get a look at Charles in his relative prime. Both Charles and Layne had lost their previous fights, Charles to Walcott for the title, and Layne to up and coming Marciano, so their careers were on the line. Charles fights here with poise and brilliant technique against the strong and relentless Layne. Charles nearly finishes Layne in the 10th, and the 11th round knockout is classic Charles. Cool and unhurried, the finish is the work of a deadly craftsman.
The Film
The fight, which took place at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, was photographed well on film. Films like this one were customarily made by the venue, news media or the promoter. In many cases, they are the only surviving footage we have of the non-title fights of the period. The print of this night time fight is clear and the angle provides a good view of the action.

Sad to see Ezzard. He’s fighting on memory. He was the best LW ever but was never given a title shot. Great great fighter at his peak

Layne was actually quite good to have deserved to be in there with Charles for three fights. He was rugged, determined, and adept at hard straight punching. Many big strong men never learn how to shoot straight, hard punches and resort to swinging to generate power.

MorayEel ...yes I agree...Joe Louis was the master of strait hard punching...I don't think I ever saw him swing...Jack Blackburn saw to that...

Charles was a bit past his best by this point but every once in a while he would cut loose and looked pretty impressive. That last left hook/right hand that he put Layne away with in the 11th was about as good as it gets.

Charles was a burned out fighter by the time he fought Marciano. He'd had over 90 fights, and they were against some of the roughest fighters of any era..3 against Archie Moore, 4 against Joe Walcott, 3 against Lloyd Marshall, and 2 fights against the great Charly Burley..and all of these guys were IN THEIR PRIME when Charles beat them, not washed up has-beens like Marciano beat.

@@ZION82able to say "washed up has beens" is very disingenuous. Ezzard Charles earned his title shot, Walcott legitimately held the title, and Archie Moore was the unquestioned number 1 contender and had a dominant ATG win streak at light heavy and heavy, undefeated at heavyweight when he fought Rocky. Rex Layne, Roland LaStarza were two guys seen as the heir apparent, not Rocky, when they fought Rex Layne especially, Marciano knocked his teeth out and ruined bridge of his mouth and he was never same fighter. Carmine Vingo was undefeated and also well regarded as a prospect and Marciano ended his career and nearly killed him. For a guy that turned pro at 25, only had a 7 year career and was small as a heavyweight his career was extremely impressive. Sonny list on was about 40, Wlad Klitschko and Luis Ortiz were about 40 but Rocky gets no credit for beating ATGs like Archie Moore at 38, when they belonged in title fights at that time and totally earned them.

@@JeffPenaify I never wrote that Charles and Moore hadn't :earned their title shots. I wrote that they were past their primes when they fought Rocky..and they were. Charles had NINETY-SIX FIGHTS and was 2-2 in his last 4 fights going into his first fight with Rocky..he was CLEARLY on the decline. His best years were in the '40's as a lightheavyweight when he was being ducked by "champions" like gus lesnevich and freddie mills. And MOORE was FORTY (not 38) when he fought Rocky, and he had 176 fights going in that match. He'd been fighting for TWENTY YEARS and was a SHELL of the fighter that he'd been in the '1940's when he was an uncrowned middleweight champion getting ducked by tony zale, rocky graziano, and marcel cerdan. By the time Moore fought rocky in '55 he was a flabby ghost of what he used to be, yet he still dropped rocky and hurt him several times. These are the FACTS.

very unlucky not to get his shot at the title - layne........charles did him a dis-service not fighting him in the fight before this where walcott beat him for the title....in walcotts last fight before that, rex layne beat him...but it was walcott who got the shot at charles.

Not luck. Norris and the IBC controlled both Charles and Walcott. It's too bad Charles and Walcott didn't fight Marciano when they were in their respective primes.
