The North American F-100 Super Sabre manufactured by North American Aviation is an American supersonic jet fighter aircraft developed from North American F-86 Sabre and later developed into the North American F-107. The F-100 Super Sabre was the USAF's first operational aircraft capable of flying faster than 760 mph in level flight and the first USAF aircraft to engage in aerial jet combat during the Vietnam War while escorting F-105 Thunderchiefs. The maiden flight of the F-100 Super Sabre took place on the 25th of May 1953 and it went into service on the 27th of September 1954. Primary users were the United States Air Force, Turkish Air Force, Republic of China Air Force and the French Air Force. There were approx. 2,294 F-100 Super Sabre produced between 1953 and 1959. The F-100 Super Sabre retired from service in 1979 to the United States Air National Guard and in 1988 to the Republic of China Air Force. Cost per unit is approx. 664,000 USD.
