On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. F-14A even let alone the F-14 B/D was superior to the F-4 in every way. It could out climb, out accelerate and out turn the Phantom. This was to the point where Navy test shows F-14 could go from fully defensive to fully offensive in just 15 seconds

What’s very interesting is how F-4 crews often beat F-14 crews in mock dogfights. Granted it was early on, but the F-14 crews were still very well trained. The F-4 is no slouch when it’s in good hands.

It's interesting, you always think of the F-4 as the one with monster power, but it actually had considerably less thrust than the F-14. However, it was also nearly 10 Tonnes lighter, which makes a massive difference.

From my understanding, the TF30 on the Tomcat was not very efficient or particularly powerful at low speeds. Get up past Mach 1, and the Tomcat's engines get a lot better, but the Phantom is going to have more grunt than the tomcat at low speeds. Their actual Thrust/weight ratios are apparently very similar, prior to the engine upgrades the Tomcat got for the B model. My understanding, however, could be flawed.

@@Skyfighter64 at least from my understanding the static sea-level thrust of the Tomcat was still a good chunk higher than the Phantom's. But it is also true that the TF-30's only really kicked in properly at higher speeds as you said. And so perhaps the F-4 has more subsonic grunt, at least when you factor in the weight difference. But then the Tomcat comes in at higher speeds. Either way I do believe you're correct in saying that the TWR is relatively similar in this sort of scenario.

@@__-fm5qv The Tomcat's biggest advantage over the F-4 is the advancements made in aerodynamic design, specifically, the high mounted wings, and the flat aft fuselage creates a much larger lifting area, lowering the wing loading, but also the high mounted wings flush with the top of the fuselage meant a vastly reduced drag profile.

The Iranian Air Force flies both the F-4 and F-14, so they've conducted this exercise of these two jets versus each other many times I'm sure. I wonder how their F-4 pilots fared in those training exercises, probably not so good.

Iranian pilots said F-4 was no match for the Tomcat. The F-4 could not turn at all. Basically, you could get behind it in 15 seconds in a Tomcat

RAF F-4s carried the SUU-23 20mm gun pod. They provided the USN F-14s adversary training in the run up to Desert Storm and gave a very good account of themselves.

My father was an f4 pilot in Vietnam, he flew without & with the gun. I remember him saying when they got the pod they were all excited, saying finally etc, only to end up getting pissed off with it because it was jamming way too often due to the mount made for it, that got fixed, hopes went up only to be crashed again, due to this new mount leading the gun to become misaligned during flight, so for a few months they were fighting with a misaligned gun which would fire one way, only to end up firing a different way on the same flight. It drove them freaking insane. Eventually it all got squared away of course. He ended up finishing his career off flying the f15, which all the pilots were really hesitant about due to all the new fancy tech, but that hesitancy ran away after their first few flights 😂

Tbf the pilot he was fighting wasn’t managing speed well and lost control of the Tomcat multiple times. If GS fought someone of equivalent or close to his skill level they wouldn’t wiped the floor with the F4b

It was actually extremely dangerous in the super-close formations the Blues fly. The reason they switched to A-4s after such a short time is because they crashed so many F-4s (and killed so many pilots) that the Navy couldn't afford to keep using them for demonstrations, not while they were still fighting in Vietnam.

Two F4 drops in a row, the old heart is in arrhythmia heaven; heard our fave stick mention the gun pod, be interesting to see one in action. Also, learned today the West Germans called the F4 the "Luftverteidigungsdiesel ("Air Defense Diesel"). I laughed out loud at the image of the beast in burner, ripping across the German countryside, smoking like a barn on fire.

I've read many stories about the trial dog fights between the Tomcat and the Phantom during the Tomcat's development. The Phantom pilots were very confident they would have the upper hand due to the Tomcat being bigger and heavier. They ended up being shocked as to how easily the Tomcat outperformed and outmaneuvered the Phantom. The Tomcat would outturn or go nose up on the Phantom and there was nothing the Phantom pilots could do to counter it.

It actually reminds me a lot of when the F4U-5 Corsair was developed, featuring metal-covered control surfaces as opposed to the canvas controls of previous variants and which were still common throughout WWII. Pilots initially doubted the plane and suspected the extra weight would be an issue, so Vought's test pilot volunteered to dogfight the Navy's F4U-4s, and consistently won.

Since I've been watching DCS, and learning more about airframes and how design/thrust/weight can factor in, I used to think the F4 was kind of ugly but now I realize how close it was to being a EuroFighter/F18. A few different design choices and they'd have really really had something special. Like the F16 just seems like a mosquito sized version of an F18, now they both fly totally different, but in appearance you can almost see a heritage I'm design. If the F4 was a Delta Wing and made with better materials it would be QUITE formidable even now.

That first dogfight was one of the most hard fought I've seen you do! Crazy. Shame on everyone involved in putting those Sparrows and early Sidewinders on our country's phantoms. That's life or death reliability required situation!

It's interesting to think about the context of some design decisions. Having a fighter without the ability to go guns back in the day was both a shortsighted choice and, apparently, several decades ahead of its time.

No, it was just shortsighted. The thinking at the time is all combat would be BVR and at supersonic speeds. Dogfights would never happen, according to the big brains in the Pentagon. So maneuverability, visibility, and guns were considered unnecessary. It might've worked except the fools in Washington immediately decreed you had to visually ID your targets before firing. My dad fought in Vietnam, and he recalls the immense frustration amongst pilots these decisions caused. Not to mention the deaths.

These two jets are my personal favorites. The old guard, and the new. I saw an old video about the "new" Tomcats, and the Phantom pilots were talking about it, abt they said they just couldn't keep up with the climb of the Cat. They were just gone. I would think the TWR might be very similar with them, but the Tomcat had much better nose authority. I am going to assume that when we get out hands on the Heatblur Phantom, it will buck and roll just like the Tomcat did. Rudder inputs and smooth stick movements will be the order of the day. I really can't wait. That first dogfight was epic!

The F-4's design-for-all idea is what you get when people forget the capabilities of a narrow-purpose fighter. Leaving off the gun was just the start. The dangerous handling near stall speed on a carrier approach and take off is another issue. Shoddy missiles in the early Sparrows was another issue altogether. The -14 was designed to intercept and to dogfight. It flew well and fought well. It had a limited purpose but was built around it. That it had enough leeway to allow it to morph a bit into the D model is a tribute to Grumman. A multi-role fighter is not a new thing, but when you start a base of design that is supposed to be used by all services you lose the individual characteristics that make a singular design fantastic.

I can’t wait to get what I need to play this. I’m building my new PC first then getting the good peripherals like a HOTAS and a VR headset. I’m getting the new Bigscreen Beyond VR headset. It’s lightweight, great for when you need your head on a swivel, and it’s using full RGB MicroOLED screens. So it’ll have the same picture quality performance as my main OLED TV. And as I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, my first Apple Product, I’ll be able to take advantage of their iOS face scanning app that allows a custom fit for the part that sits on your face for personalized comfort. This headset will probably be the most comfortable VR headset for both iPhone owners and normal folk because of its lightweight design.

I don't know if it's still there or not because it's been a while but there's a fantastic 2-man 360-degree flight simulator at the planetarium in St Louis. If WAS only $7 to go cruising around Vietnam in an F-4 and shoot down MiG-21s or was it 19s, I'm not sure. Anyway, if anyone is around the St. Louis area and wanted something to do, the planetarium was a great day.

Funny how people bring up the same "doesn't need a gun" argument when we have THE SAME issue now as we did in Vietnam. Weapons don't track well, and radar can't see until too close for missiles. If you're confused i understand. The key is Stealth. The raptor has weapons that for work for now, but what happens when china produces a air Stealthier J-20? Or Iran gets an Su-57 somehow? Weapons that have worked great against F-15s and Flankers might not against 6th gen fighters of any country and lasers are not practical for highly maneuverable aircraft yet

The Phantom really is my favorite fighter jet. But and is a big fat BUT, not putting a cannon on that plane from the start was the dumbest idea anyone could have.
