A US Navy F-35C Lightning II Jet has crashed in the South China Sea.
The Joint Strike Fighter jet impacted the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson during landing, according to a US Navy spokesperson.
This led to the Lightning II, which costs around $100 million per plane, falling into the water.
Seven sailors on board the USS Carl Vinson, which is a Nimitz Class supercarrier, were injured. That includes the pilot, who was able to safely eject before impact, and was recovered from the sea.

Accident rates: (Class A rates) F15: 2.36 per 100,000 hours F-22: 5.49 per 100,000 hours F18: 2.84 per 100,000 hours F16: 3.45 per 100,000 hours Harrier: 11.4 per 100,000 hours F35: 1.4 per 100,000 hours With this loss, we now at 1.7 per 100,000 hours. There is nothing that suggests this crash was the result of a single engine. However, there is a LOT of F35’s now flying In fact the F35 is the best-selling fighter in 40 years. And more amazing? Well, they lost none during the testing phase. And the F35 also has escaped the so called “bad” early years in which we often see high crash rates. So, for example the bad “early” year for the F16? They had a whopping 17 F-16 crashes in ONE year! (1982). And even more amazing there are more F35’s flying now than when that bad early year occurred for the F16. And even the fan favorite and loved F15 Eagle? They saw eight (8) in one early year - 1978. The F35 not really had that "worst early year", and given that over 750 F35's been made - that's more than any newer 4th gen jet right now. To put it mild? The F35 clearly by HUGE margins has been shown to be one of the most reliable new fighters ever built, and most safe.

@Andy Gadd You are right. They keep trying to float that bullshit of only $100 Million per copy. Before they even had one aircraft in the fleet or operational, they had spent $400 BILLION! And yes that is B as in BILLION. This is the most expensive weapon program in history. And it was a dog a long time ago. The whole program is preposterous and it shows just how fucked up the people are that are now running the DOD and the Military Industrial Complex. The actual cost of this dog is going to be higher than $400 million each, that is because they will never reach the projected economies of scale they bloviated about when puffing this pig. Orders have been significantly trimmed back and cancelled and the countries suckered into this program are going to be stuck with it for too, too long.

It takes extraordinary effort to keep the fleet operating even close to the required levels and the needed 'availability' rates are not sustainable long-term. By the end of the week of September 27, 2021, 52 F-35s sat idle because they didn’t have functioning engines. The problem is particularly horrid in the Air Force, since nearly all aircraft requiring an engine are F-35A variants. Service officials based plans on the promised performance rather than on the demonstrated performance and so underestimated the maintenance depot capacity they were going to need to repair broken engines. The unanticipated volume of work has overwhelmed the maintenance crews, and the backlog has grounded much of the fleet, including many aircraft being used in operational units. It takes more than twice as long as the program’s contract specifications to complete needed repairs. Constant issues, overly expensive, and unreliable.

I was there. Well not on the flight deck, but in the berthing when it happened. Heard a boom thinkimg it was just a normal landing. Then a man overboard went over the one MC, after that a fire was reported. So yeah shit got real quick.

Let me write clearly. When Turkey was unfairly excluded from the partnership in the F-35s, they started to decline as they could not produce the same parts produced by the USA and produced by the Turks before and could not achieve the same quality. The Turks have now surpassed the Germans in producing very high quality goods.

Check out CW Lemoine or The ready room. Mover and Gonky go through an article on their podcast about how over budget it’s been and a lot of the problems this aircraft is giving. It’s not the superstar the media is portraying it to be. It’s hated a lot by a lot of the people dealing with them.
