F-4 Phantom II Mishap (VF-151, USS Coral Sea)

Mishap on CAT-3, an F-4B of VF-151 is pulled down the deck by its mangled nose gear after a miscue. Look closely at the nose gear and you can see it collapse and then get tangled in the bridal/shuttle pulling the Phantom into the sea. Another Coral Sea PLAT video from Gary Schreffler. I was also on deck that day when the skipper and LCdr Keating had to eject. I was standing right across from the waist cat when the accident occurred. I have always maintained that the hold-back "apple" prematurely broke and the F-4 in full burner lurched forward just before the cat fired. The cables fell off and the plane rolled down the deck ways and the shuttle blew the nose gear up into the radome. The plane continued down the deck on it's nose and ejection occurred just before it went off the angle deck. Canopies and ejection seats were coming down and I had to scramble. I looked aft and saw Cdr. Winton blowing down the deck and over the fantail. I remember he did not want us to try and grab him as he knew there was no stopping him with the deck wind. A very sad day. Wow, that's one of those moments that will live forever in your memory. Dad told me of a time when he was a signalman on the Antietam during a hurricane. The waves were breaking upon the signal bridge. And once they reached Pensacola they crashed into the dock. I want to thank you for your service to this great nation. And as I always say: FLATTOP SAILORS, THE BEST IN THE WORLD 🌎!!!

My name is John Morgan and I was a member of VF151 from 1964 to 1965. I can remember losing an F4 Phantom on the second shake down cruise. It failed on the catapult takeoff and went into the sea. I will never forget what happened. The pilot was Lt. MacIntyre. His RIO officer was ENS Day and was lost at sea. Some memories you will never forget.

WestPac 79-80 we lost an F-4 crew. I was taking a class just below the flight deck when we heard the explosion on the flight deck. Took photos of burned aircraft the next day.

I got onboard her on my Birthday waited for her arrival in the PI. 12/21/1979, upon leaving Subic Bay we lost 2 aircraft 1 was a A-7 in the first few days out. I was already seasick within a few hours then, 4 yrs later 2 west-pacs & a world cruise, Salty!

my name is ted welfelt I was in vf-151 under a f-4 wing on the round down when this happened both pilot and rio hit left wing of my plane.lcdr keating was easy to talk to and was very respected by the enlisted men. working maitance you would come in contact with him. this was his last take off from a carrier as he was being given a desk job. I picked up the accident video as a duty driver and was allowed to see it before giving it to the squad. the pilot of my plane was so unsettled that my plane was not launched.
