2:15 -- Excellent job from Jester calling the correct callout of "Canopy down, lights out, stripes are aligned." Now, some additional callouts from the real F-4 days (these are USAF calls...I don't know about the Navy's callouts). - When the ABs light, the exhaust nozzles swing back to about 1/2-2/3 open, and the engine RPM drops slightly (I saw the nozzle gauges swing back, but no RPM movement). In any case, when the WSO sees the RPM swing with the AB lightoff, he calls "Two good swings." - When the airspeed indicator needle starts moving (roughly above 30 KIAS), the WSO calls "Off the peg." - There was no "80 knots" call. - At 100 KIAS, the WSO calls "100 knots, go for tires". Above 100 KIAS, of you blow a tire, you're committed to taking off. Below 100 KIAS, you aborted for a blown tire. - After liftoff, the pilot raises the gear and retracts the flaps and slats right away. The WSO will call, "3 up, in and up". That means all 3 gear are up, slats are in and the flaps are up. BTW, F-4 takeoffs start with the stick full aft. When the nose raises, the pilot then holds that attitude and lets the jet fly off. There is no rotate speed, but we did always compute our Nosewheel Liftoff and Takeoff speeds. With the stick full aft, the nosewheel usually unstuck around 133 KIAS. Liftoff was usually around 165-170 KIAS. This was consistent between F-4Es, Fs, and Gs.

The F-4 was such a beast, but it also wasn't fuel consumption friendly. Between internal and external tanks, the Phantom could hold about 3000 gallons of fuel, roughly enough to fuel the family station wagon for 10 years. In full AB, you could burn though rather quickly, so pilots made sure to monitor their fuel gauges carefully throughout the flight. The programmers did an amazing job with this model.
@timonsolus
@timonsolus 20 күн бұрын
That's why there were a lot of tankers around back then - even in Vietnam, the F-4's often needed tankers to make it home (especially flying from Ubon in Thailand).

My recollection from reading old stories about the F-4 is that you'd release brakes before lighting the AB. Otherwise you'd risk skidding the tires across the runway, or possibly even having the tires rotate around the wheel rims.
@becauseifly3440

Rocket's correct. Per the Dash-1, you ran power up to (but not beyond) 85%, checked pressures/temps/nozzles, then released brakes while stroking the burners.

To navigate, you can use the TACAN method. Choose any airport you want to use as a beacon and then see what's the bearing and distance from that TACAN beacon to your target and tune your TACAN to it. Then just fly so you cross into the heading from TACAN to target and follow it til you reach the target distance. It's super accurate and you only ever need to use the map for initial planning. Even if you have to deviate from your planned flight path to fight some bandits, you can always use that TACAN info to get to where your target is. And it works with any weather and any time of day

Heat Blur Using AIM-9L/M and AIM-7F/M on a supposedly hyper-detailed aircraft model when the real phantoms used AIM-9B/E/J during Vietnam and AIM-9P thereafter is really kind've low balling their own stock in trade. AIM-7E have an entirely different body duct antenna set and are slight shorter as well as all white. No gunmetal/black fins. AIM-9J/P is the one with the swept, cranked arrow, canards and longer GCS nose. The only long-nose Phantom users I know who got the new LAU-114 rails for the AIM-9L/M were the F-4G and RF-4C in the USAF and the F-4E (IDFAF) and F-4F (Luftwaffe). I'm not sure about the JASDF, they may have also gotten them when they upgrade to the F-4EJ-Kai. As the others have noted, the TISEO is well known as the Target Identification System Electro Optical which, in combination with the ARN-101 LORAN, was an excellent means of updating waypoints, aligning Maverick seekers with early acquisition (daylight) and _taking passive shots_ (radar OFF, CW on) with the AIM-7. The TISEO is aligned with the APQ-120 radar dish which gives you angle off and the CW is your launch+X timing signal for lead pursuit. Camp New Amsterdam (Soesterburg) F-4E used to regularly smoke Bitburg F-15As with this snapup-to-Fox-1 mode, back in the day (when the early ALR-56 could not detect CW). So the ASX-1 system really needs to be on the jet, for a lot of reasons, not least that the F-4E turns like a truck and has the energy retention of a whale on stilts with those draggy slats. So do some combination of ALQ-87/101 (Vietnam) and 119/131 (70s-80s) jammer pods. And AVQ-23 Pave Spike (late Vietnam) and AVQ-26 Pave Tack (80s, FLIR). You take off without a TJS pod and you're gonna get tagged because no matter how many times you press it, the Chaff/Flare panic switch only accomplishes so much. Similarly, you fly OCA airbase without Shrikes and Mavericks to suppress and LGBs (as Spike laser designator pods or AXQ-14 datalinks for the GBU-15) to bomb through the concrete from medium altitudes, and you will be lucky if you don't lose half your squadron on the very first mission. Post Vietnam, the F-4 community migrated almost entirely to precision strike so the F-teens could have their day in the sun as OCA/DCA 'Air Superiority' ferraris (though an F-4E will humiliate any F-16 on the planet, before AMRAAM). This meant a lot of heavy weight loads which is more or less why you have a Blk.48 slatted jet. But without LORAN and all the other Strike Goodies, you are not going to be really survivable. For a community used to the F-15/16, this is important or you will get a LOT of buyer's remorse. Going with the F-4F ICE would also get you early AIM-120 AMRAAM and some schnazzy paint schemes, enabling Su-27/MiG-29 fights without complete embarrassment. Finally, though it wasn't really prevalent in any way (a few test airframes in the Guard/Res), consider allowing the single-piece windscreen. As staring out of those jail bars is gonna get old, mighty fast, for a lot of players.

Have you got a key binding or HOTAS binding to get Jester to go back to a regular scan?

Longshot, is there a possibility of a WSO or backseater tutorial on this aircraft in the future? I'd like to learn to be a backseater but I really need a tutorial....

Good mission. Could use a primer maybe GS and you could pull that off. Not an idiots but an honest tutorial.

Do we know if there is any bombing system on this plane? At least like the LABS on the A-4? Cause' I sure don't appreciate having to aim bombs like a WW2 fighter if ya know what I mean.
