Low Light, handheld, with a lens that's wide open at F 7.1. A recipe for disaster or can I get some decent images?
Can the advantages of the Canon RF 100-500 outweigh it's flaws or is it unusable and overpriced?
Let me help YOU to take YOUR IMAGES to the NEXT LEVEL!

Jan, after shooting with a Sigma 150-500mm f/6.3 for over 15 years. I have been using the rf 100-500 mm f/7.1 for half a year now. And I have to say, a whole new world has opened up for me. The RF100-500 is lighter in weight, short focus distance, faster and delivers endlessly beautiful and sharp images. What a happy person I am!

I decided to keep my 100-400 f 4.5-5.6 ii. It's heavier and doesn't have as much reach, but it's built like a tank and is usable in relatively low light. It works great with the EF to RF adapter and both the 1.4 and 2x. The plastic scared me, but the 7.1 was a deal killer.

Hi Jan, I now use this lens with the Canon EOS R7 which gives me an extra reach compared to R6 and R5. I very much agree with you that f/7.1 is not a big issue when you consider all the advantages that this lens offer: lightness, compactness, well built, very short focus distance and great image quality. Excellent for bird photography. Well done Canon! Jacques (Mauritius).

That setup combination (r5 +rf 100-500) is everything i wished for. I was using the sony a7riii with the 200-600mm and i was getting good results… i waited and waited for an available a1 in the market and nothing appeared, so i pulled the trigger with the r5 and the 100-500, and man… best decision i ever made. In result of that i sold all the sony equipment and i now only have Canon:)). This lens is super super sharp, even croping a lot. Truly remarkable!

Hi Jan, I have a Canon 500mm f4 that I love, but my shoulders are no longer able to do handheld photography. I decided with some fear to try the RF 100-500, to replace my 500mm. What a surprise it was to see the great image quality of the RF100-500! I never thought that one day I would replace my 500mm with this zoom.

Hi Jan Great video as usual. I have been using the R5 with the 100-500 over 4 months and it is my go to combination. I bought the lense primarily for shooting flying seabirds on the local cliffs and I can handhold all day. 7.1 aperture is fine for me. My hide at home is positioned to allow a good distance between the subject and the background. When shooting on the move you just need to be aware of your background as usual to avoid distractions Bob

Great video again Jan, I agree that the 100-500mm is a great and highly versatile lens. Apart from wildlife photography, I also use this lens for landscapes as it is light enough to carry around on hikes. I was toying with the idea of getting a 70-200mm for landscapes and birds in the environment, but I've decided that there is no need as the 100-500mm does the same job. By the way, I love your latest videos from TNQ as I've been lucky enough to visit there several times and have photographed many of the same birds that you show.

Thanks for all of your amazing videos! I give lessons on the R5 in particular, and a customer kindly loaned me this fabulous 100-500. I am used to other brands, an experience of more than 30 years in photography. I find that this combination even at 7.1 aperture remains so effective and the stabilization coupled with the sensor downright stunning! This telephoto lens has no equal even in other brands if we take into account its modest weight. I thought the price of this zoom would increase given the crisis but it is still so low. Clearly, its price is undervalued and so much the better for all bird lovers :)

Heavy gear was starting to hurt my neck and back. I love shooting birds. I was slow to move to mirrorless as the DSLR is still a very good instrument. I went for the R5 and 100-500mm. It's much lighter than what I was carrying. 500mm is very handy (as birds I shoot are small). Eye tracking is good on the R5(its far from perfect). It works better when something has a clear background. A cluttered background can still easily fool focusing (spot or eye). F7.1 really hasn't bothered me so far. I think 500mm and the high MP makes up for the high ISO. I think its a great lens, sharp and flexible. I love my 600mm F4II but really it's not a flexible lens to be moving around with. A 100-500 is far more usable, flexible and portable.

Hi Jan, thanks for showing some new awesome little birds!! This way of shooting looks a lot like how we shoot in any nature reserve in Belgium. And it's why I opted (while still using DSLR) for the 100-400Lii and not the much heavier Sigma 150-600 Sports for example. Interesting to see your non-safety approach .. and it can indeed sometimes makes good sense to get the shot before the bird is fully aware it's drawing attention. I should try it out next time .. but not too often because my wife will not like it when I spoil any chance for her to shoot the same bird ;-) Suddenly, my local German photo shop is offering the combo of R5 and 100-500 with a rebate of almost the R7 price .. tempting offer, but still requiring to add a significant amount on top of the unknow resale value of R6, 100-400Lii and both EF extenders ..

Jan, this is hugely encouraging for all of us who use any brand of zoom lens. Sony's long zooms are also expensive but can provide high-quality images in less than ideal conditions; while you are only talking about your Canon lens here, your experience and methods apply equally to my equipment. Thanks for this and all the videos on your channel. You're a great teacher and motivator!

@@jan_wegener I appreciate your demonstration and thoughts on using a mid-range zoom lens. I use a Sony 70-400mm GII f/4-5.6 lens and I am forced to shoot at 5.6 to 8 at higher ISO but as long as the background is not too dark and I don't let the ISO go too high (I have ISO maximum set to 12,800), keep a high enough shutter speed and keep camera shake to a minimum, I can get incredible images. However, I disagree that Sony's IS is less effective. I only use Sony A-mount equipment. IS is in the camera NOT in the lens and I find it incredibly effective. Do you offer any discounts for your Masterclass + Perched video?

To comment on the f-stop vs tstop. I actually tested this with the Rf100-500 and the Tamron 150-600G2 on my R6. What I did was setup the same shot with controlled lighting and then used auto ISO to see how different the ISO keeping all other settings constant. I found the RF allowed 1/3 stop more light at 500mm. With the 1.4 teleconverter I think it was about a stop less light at 700mm than the Tamron at 600mm. That eased any concerns I had and I ultimately sold the Tamron to keep the RF.

I have both the 100-500 and a 600m F4. I find these days that I almost always take my 100-500 for the reasons you mentioned in your video: low weight (can be hand-held easily and I cannot hand-hold the 600mm for any length of time), zoom capability (with the 600 I can be too close to get the shot I want), yet still get sharpe images, etc.

It was Mk 1 lens. You make a good point, however I very seldom used my 500 at f 4 as DoF was often too narrow particularly for more than one bird, bigger birds and certainly animals where the eye must be sharp and the body mostly in focus. Living and shooting wildlife in southern Africa I found f 5.6 to f 6.3 to be better able to keep the whole subject in sharp focus while maintaining a soft background.

I do love this lens, it’s so versatile for sure. I do wish it had been a 100-600 or 200-600 (like the excellent Sony lens) My go to lens in the past was the 100-400L Ver1, It was really good for just about everything. So when I do shoot now in low light situations with the 100-500, I’m a bit surprised at having to bump up my ISO so much. However with all the great noise reduction software out there it’s not really a problem. I guess it’s just adjusting to the new normal of high ISOs, I remember when shooting at 1600 was just a crazy thing to do. Good to get your thoughts in the video Jan, thanks.

When the R5 first came out, the RF 100-500 was my very first lens. Incredibly versatile from "macro" to tele. Super high quality images. But . . . birds seem to know when f7.1 isn't enough. Our perches get crowded just after the sun drops behind the horizon. I figure an f4 lens would get me an extra half hour to an hour of good shooting each day (morning and evening combined). The 100-500 will stay because of its versatility, mobility, and ability to follow birds in forest / jungle. But a 400 f2.8 or 600 f4 is in my future. Some images only come from those wide apertures.

Great video Jan. Where is the mangrove boardwalk? Anyway, I use the same outfit, and find DxO solves the noise issue, and IS solves the low shutter speed. I've got sharp hand held of a rufous owl at 1/64 sec. shooting electronic and picking the winners. Mate, its a far cry from the days when I bought a roll of Kodachrome 64! I love the lens and the R5.

I have this lens and I love it. Like most Canon RF glass it is certainly a bit overpriced. But, if you can swing it, I don't think you will be disappointed. It is a very strong lens in every way. Of course, every lens has its place. This lens functions well in a wide range of conditions and photography genres.

It's a great lens for the size and weight. I recently traveled and didn't want to carry the 600f4 as it was not primarily a photography trip. The R5 and 100-500 easily fit in my carry on luggage and in the field, with 1.4x TC and stopped down a bit it works quite well even with more distant birds.

Yes, it has become a handy alternative. Just annoying to having to take off the Tc all the time to fit it into the bag

Hello Jan, Thank you for your videos! They are very informative. I am curious have you ever tried using high sync flash of maybe 1/1000 or 1/2000 at full power with a better Beamer attachment? This may allow you to use lower ISO and still have a bit of catch light

I had to get a Canon lens because of the problems with AIAF with Sigma lenses, I picked up a mint 100-400L ii for £1200, no way could I justify £2900, even second hand they are £2500. I think Canon are playing games too, they recent jacked up the new price for the 100-400Lii to £2400, presumably so more people bought the RF lens. Apart from the extra 100mm I don't think there is that much difference [apart from f5.6]. Keep making these videos, cheers. Derek

Some of my best wildlife shots from before I upgraded were taken on a 16mp Micro 4/3 camera (Panasonic G85) with a $600 Olympus 70-300 f/5-6.7, equivalent to a full frame 600mm f/13. Most people would scoff at the idea of an f/13 max aperture full frame lens, but it worked great for me. Sure, in low light it wasn't good, but the stabilization on the G85 allowed me to handhold shots at 1/100 and 1/50 of a second. Sure, better gear can remove limitations and allow a skilled photographer to create better results, but a skilled photographer should also be able to create good results with the most limited gear.

Hi Jan, Another lovely video and inspiring video! I'm in the UK and we simply dont have the dazzling colours in our the bird life that you have in Australia so just love seeing what you can find in Australia! With the R5 do you modify your autofocus settings at all when working in a dark environment like this? Do you find eye tracking is still successful for you most of the time? BTW have you altered the af settings at all from those that you showed in the original R5 set up video? best regards Chris

I've held back on getting this lens from my current ef 100-400 ii. My biggest dislike is being limited to f5.6 at full length, so f7.1 doesn't interest me. I want to upgrade to a lens for softer backgrounds. But the price jump to a 400 f2.8 or a 500 f4 is massive. I'm hoping the rf 400 or 500 DO lens will be the answer, as I'm also a hand held shooter

I would say it is underrated. Great lens. I also have the 800 mm lens which actually is lighter and also amazing for the price. F 11 isn’t great, but as you said the R5 and R6 handle noise well at higher ISOs. I use it more as it is lighter and gives me more reach. But love them both. I have the R6 body.

I agree with everything you said. This lens is expensive but not overpriced. It replaces three other lenses in my opinion (macro, mid range and long range). I carry this lens only and no tripod in the field with my R5. A dream combo. The 7,1 aperture is not a problem, especially if you want more of your subject in focus. In bright sunlight you even need a ND filter for video at 24-30 fps (less so at 60 or 120 fps).

Jan I do not want to argue against using the excellent 100-500 handheld, I love it (IQ, weight, versatility, ...)! Regarding shooting on a walk with a 600 4.0: Did you ever try to support its weight with a monopod while not loosing flexibility and speed of use? Put a little head between the lens and the monopod (my preference these days Sirui L-20 or similar).

I am planning on buying this lens. The reviews, yours included, show it to be a great lens. Do I wish it was cheaper, of course. So I will either wait for a sale or buy one when Canon has a refurbished one available again. Your quick comment about f stop vs t stop is 100% true and goes largely unstated. Since f stop is just a ratio it does not tell us how much light actually gets to the sensor.

I find the background bokeh on the 100-500 very good. I haven't done any side by side comparison but I'm sure an F4 would be better but I haven't been disappointed, no distracting unsmoothness. I really can't complain about the lens.

Beautiful images Jan! I have the rf100-400mm and so far since I also have the Sony A7iv and the 200-600mm lens I have resisted buying the RF100-500mm lens. I really think it's the right way to go since with my R7 I'll be getting 800mm! Even the RF100-400mm is giving me 640mm on the R7 and seems to have made my Sony 200-600mm lens sort of heavy and almost obsolete. It's a tough call and I'm still trying to figure out what to do! If I sell the Sony lens I won't have to put much money with it in order to get that Canon lens. I think I would probably carry it more often and get a lot more use out of it than with the Sony on a full frame getting only 600mm.
