This is a loose guide to replacing your factory 10 Bolt rear end in most 1982-2002 F-Body Camaro and Firebirds. WS6, Trans AM (TA), SS and Z28's.
My car is a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 - LS1/T56 car.
The rear end in this video is from Strange Engineering, and features a 3.91 gear ratio, a Yukon Dura-Grip Posi, 1350 Chromoly Yoke, 1/2" x 2" screw in wheel studs, 33 spline axles, LPW cover, and 4 Channel backing plate that retain the factory ABS/Traction Control.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This 2000 Pontiac Trans AM WS6 had the following mods at the time of filming this video:
Brian Tooley (BTR) Stage 4 Camshaft and supporting modifications, 10% Underdrive Pulley, Speed Engineering Longtube Headers into a Borla Catback. UMI Rear LCA's/PHB/LCARB's/SFC's and Bilstein B6 Pro Shocks. MGW short throw shifter, Tick Master Cylinder/Ram Slave Cylinder, Lightweight Flywheel and a Grip Force Stage 2 clutch, TB coolant bypass, Midwest Chassis Front & Rear Tubular Bumper Supports, Hawks 5.0 Pads, StopTech Slotted Rotors, Strano Master Cylinder Brace, Strange Engineering 12 Bolt Rear End.

Great video with a lot of info. I am surprised you didn't add a BMR adjustable torque arm bar when you did the install and some 4.11 gears instead of the 3.92. When ever I get around to having a 12 bolt installed in my 01 WS6 I will also add a stronger driveshaft, but I don't know if I will go with an aluminum or a carbon fiber. I love my T/A, but for now it is on the back burner while I have fun with my challenger redeye.
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 4 жыл бұрын
I will add a torque arm down the road. Leaning towards the UMI or MWC unit when the time comes. The 3.91 gear is a really happy medium for a car that you'll use on the highway a lot. I dont want it to be a one trick pony! When you do your car, consider a steel driveshaft. Mine is good for around 800hp.

I hope you plan on replacing that Stamped Steel Garbage TRQ Arm...lol. I went with the BMR Adj one plus the M6 Cross Member that relocates the TRQ Arm Mounting off the tail shaft of the Trans. Dont no regrets spending the money there. Im running a Moser 12 Bolt with larger Axles, C-Clip Eliminator 4:10 through a Detroit Trutrack. I did have a full spool for a while. But I'm not much of a drag race guy so I took it out. Nice Vids man. I eliminated TC on my car as well. EDIT: I really like those wheels

@@Greenlightfilming No, I made sure my Pinion Angle was good. I noticed on my car at least with a 2in drop that even when I adjust my lca in the back up or down a hole in my brackets my PA is stays within spec. I did have like a rubbing sound going over bumps and it took me a while to find out where it was. With the BMR T56 cross member with TRQ Arm relocation you have to trim part of the mounting bracket at the rear end for it to mount into the 2nd set of holes on the Moser 12 Bolt. I have an older Moser 12 bolt so I'm not sure if it's still that way or not. It cured its rubbing immediately. LoL.althought not long after I started getting a vibration in 5th-6th gear from 65-85mph. Discovered that the 5-6 cluster which is pressed on had worked lose. TDP has a great repair service for this and has never had a come back. I'm out of state visiting family so if theres massive spelling and grammar errors I'm on my phone...lol

Nice vid! But question...you got aftermarket lca's and panhard bar and a dam fine rear setup...but still a stock torque arm? What gives? That should the first or at least included with the other bars you have. Your losing torque traction time and reliability keeping that stamped piece of metal.
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 4 жыл бұрын
Replacing the torque arm adds quite a bit of cost to what was already spending a decent chunk on the car. I totally agree with you that the factory one isn't up to par with most aftermarket torque arms. Just doing it all a step at a time.

Well I enjoyed that, you're a patient mechanic, I would never attempt that by myself. I have a 2000 W68 V6 Firebird that is equipped from the factory with G80 and GU6, the latter being the 3.42 final drive, the car does not have traction control. I am a bit skeptical about the use those tubular lower control arms, how can you know for sure that the additional torsional loads applied to the stamped steel mounting brackets are not too much for them. Plus the whole suspension is tuned for the flexing of the 3-sided stamped steel LCAs. What are you going to do with the aluminum driveshaft, how much is it worth?
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 4 жыл бұрын
What you didnt see was all of the cursing and lying on my back with my eyes shut making it all go away. Lol. I'm not sure anyone had had problems with the LCA mounts tearing away from the subframe. @Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 5 ай бұрын
The traction control and speedometer are probably two separate issues. Your rear end will have sensors for ABS/TCC or it won't. The speedometer reads the output shaft of the transmission. You can set the speedometer in HP Tuners to compensate for non-factory rear tire height and a swapped rear gear.

Probably luck of the draw. If yours was driven in the winter/rain constantly it will be more corroded. This one was pretty well kept.

Very informative video. You were explaining when the reluctor wheel spins the magnetic pick up reads a sine wave. Sine wave as I know it is a/c voltage and cars are d/c. Am I missunderstanding something? Let me know so I can understand this better. Great video.
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 4 жыл бұрын
The best of my understanding is that the way these sensors function is is like a sine wave because of the inductance of the reluctor wheel as it passes the magnetic pickup. Cars do run on nominal 12vDC charging systems, yes. However, a subsystem could definitely utilize a signal like this that the ECU would be able to interpret, much like a crank trigger. Some components of late model cars also use serial/data links to make modules communicate. Its not all entirely archaic DC electronics.

* BIG QUESTION & HELP* What other differentials will fit like the 12 bolt that will connect to stock wiring? My 10 bolt is broken down as expected.
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 3 жыл бұрын
Strange makes a great direct fit 12 bolt. You can also find a fabricated 9" style from places like Strange, Moser, Midwest Chassis, Quick Performance etc. You can also rebuild the 10 bolt.

Hi, does it seem faster or slower with the added weight? And did you upgrade to a strange steal drive shaft, or are you still running a stock aluminum one? I heard with any aftermarket power increase they can have a tendency to twist off..?
@Greenlightfilming
@Greenlightfilming 4 жыл бұрын
It definitely seems like its quicker with the new gear ratio. I have a steel driveshaft in there too with Spicer joints and a billet yoke. You are right about the factory parts twisting like a pop can.

I would recommend keeping the brakes/backing plates from your car. They aren't super cheap to replace and OEM backing plates are tough to find.

Going to upgrade the rear in my built 2002 Collector Edition Trans Am WS6 Manual eventually. Do you think the Strange steel driveshaft is a necessity ? I'll probably go with 3.91's too.

I would highly recommend it. The factory aluminum ones are known to twist up and shred like a pop can with hard launches. My steel one is good for around 800hp.

@@Greenlightfilming this is my 3rd 4th generation I've owned...and built... But this trans am needs alot of love... I bought the car from a kid in his 20s. And he was into radio and subwoofers and neon lights underneath the car. So when I bought this car I knew it was going to be a project. From front to back.... I need to do Minor body work and then a complete new paint job. The kid painted the car Black with way tooooo much metal flake..... I'm a proud owner of a 07 Z06 it's my baby... But I'm into building 4th generation f Body's... And this project trans am I bought is going to be just that... A complete remake over... It's going to take a couple years to complete. But she's going to look awesome. I'm installing a four point cage and keeping the back seats in... It's going to be mild engine build. Cam heads header's catback system. It's going to be a show car when complete...
