I mean at that point the north was on fire to get them & keeping ned alive was the best bargaining game they had. Giving joffrey power was the worst decision they ever made & it blows my mind that none of these fools saw it coming with all the intelligence & wisdom they all had...
@ColCaffran
@ColCaffran Жыл бұрын
You will notice all the councillors (bar one) are surprised by Joffrey's order. When he says "Bring me his head" Pycelle looks shocked, Varys runs over and Cersei is obviously trying to convince her son not to do it. Only one of the councillors seems unperturbed by Joffrey's choice. I've always thought that off screen a small council meeting happens where they decide, and the king agrees, for Eddard to be held prisoner and later take the black; but Littlefinger speaks to the king later and changes his mind.
@Talisguy
@Talisguy 4 ай бұрын
@@ColCaffran That's a cool idea, but I'm not sure, because of one thing: Cersei could have stopped the execution and didn't. She's Queen Regent. All she had to do was order Ser Ilyn not to execute Ned and he would have been able to take the Black as planned. As Regent, she rules for Joffrey until he's a legal adult. She effectively _outranks_ him. Ned only dies because she either fumbled the ball horribly or was so unwilling to discipline Joffrey in any way that she just let him screw up all their plans with his moronic sadism (I don't think this is ever spelled out in the show, but it does give those scenes where Tyrion and Tywin chew Cersei out for not stopping the execution more bite - she could have stopped it with _one sentence,_ but didn't.) Did Littlefinger know that Cersei would fail to stop the execution? It seems like that would be a hell of a gamble. ...Though I guess it's possible that he'd take the damage that the Crown would suffer if Joffrey was seen giving a pointlessly cruel, stupid order in public for the hell of it and then being overruled by his mother as a consolation prize if the execution didn't go ahead.
@Talisguy
@Talisguy 4 ай бұрын
@@zegdapitra5937 On the one hand, Cersei is Queen Regent and can overrule him when he does something stupid (since she's legally ruling for him and wields the power of the throne) so they do have a safeguard in place. On the other hand, Cersei is either too stupid, too ignorant of her legal power over Joffrey or just too unwilling to discipline him to actually be a safeguard. So they did see it coming and put in a failsafe, but their failsafe was utterly unfit for the task, so it went horribly wrong anyway.

Interesting irony... in episode 1, Ned executes a deserter for leaving the night's watch but truthfully warned them about the white walkers. At the moment, Ned judged the deserter as a liar and a coward. In episode 9, Ned is killed the same way but doesn't give a truthful account of what went on. He dies "dishonored" to save his family. The same blade used to execute ned was the blade that he used to execute the honest deserter. Moral of the story: human justice doesn't always reward the truth and rightfulness

I have to admit that killing off the main character at the beginning of the tale is a badass move by the author George R.R. Martin. I can remember reading Lord Edward Starks' execution was just as shocking in print. I had to read it a few times to truly grasp it. The show did a good job of portraying it. And even knowing that it was coming still stirred the same emotion as did all those years earlier. It natural to say screw it and stop at this point in the story but it would be a huge mistake and plus curiosity is force that cannot be denied. All I can say strap in and hold tight because this is going to be one hell of a ride.

The reason the Ned Stark thing has gone down as an iconic television moment which people still talk about to this day is cause back then in 2010 a TV show killing off its main character, no, THE main character who had top billing on the credits, was pretty much an unheard of thing. You might see it once in a blue moon now, but it almost never happend a decade ago. And he died in the 1st season! That still doesn't happen today!Oh well buckle up, it's going to get a lot darker from here. 🙃

The amazing thing is conversation that Jon had with the Targaryen at the Nights Watch. He told Jon, that love is death of duty. What is honor, compared to holding your (newborn) child in your hands? Eddard Stark is an honorable man, always was known for that... but what is honor, compared to holding his children in his hands again. Ned chose love instead honor, and sadly it cost him everything. Not condemning his actions, just pointing out the parallel that fit so amazingly.

Great show and loved your reaction. Ned's story is so well written, because although viewers will feel like his decisions were foolish, the correct answer was always violent and cruel. He knew that telling Cersei was not the wisest play, but he doesn't want children to be murdered by his choices, and I don't want to characterise such a noble motivation as stupid. Did Ned not realise that he could be endangered by doing this? Or did he resent the idea of taking actions that might result in killing innocent children just to save himself? It'd be one thing if Ned was portrayed as a simpleton who got outmanuvered by Cersei's superior intellect, but I think the writing made it very clear that Ned squandered his opportunities for noble reasons, and that we viewers only reveal ourselves to be not as good as he is when we say that he should have acted in a way that prioritised himself, without regard for who else gets hurt as a consequence. Such a well written masterpiece this season was.

re: Ned's false confession and why he did it. It wasn't to save his own life or in hope of saving his life. He accepts his death, even asks Varys to kill him in the dungeon. He explicitly tells Varys he'd happily choose his honor over his life. What does Varys say? "But what of your daughter's life, my lord?" This is the last we hear from Ned prior to his confession. The Maester Aemon/Jon Snow convo also touches on this (it also touches on other things later on which I will not go into). "If the day should ever come when your lord father was forced to choose between honor on the one hand and those he loves on the other, what would he do?" Basically, Varys tells Ned that if he doesn't confess, Sansa will be harmed. Ned gives up his honor and does the false confession to prevent that, not to save his own life.

He remembered the jest the King had shared in the crypts of Winterfell, as the Kings of Winter looked on with cold stone eyes. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒔, Robert had said, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒕. How he had laughed. Yet he had gotten it wrong. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔, Ned Stark thought, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅.

You think it'd be Ned wouldn't say that stuff. But the worse thing is he does and still dies, cementing Joffrey's position as king by Ned's dying words. If you think for a second he didn't want to say the truth by the look on his face. He wanted to protect his family and not cause any more war or conflict. He just wanted everything resolved peacefully. :( And that's exactly why he died. Good people don't live long generally in GoT

The thing about this show is that you will feel every motion to a higher degree than with any other show you’ve ever watched. You never know what’s coming, and that’s one of the great things about the show is the unpredictability. Buckle up!

I'm sure u already know this D & D couldn't portray battles earlier on the season due to low budget but its said in the books That Jaime was absolutely slaughtering Robs men and once Jaime saw that his men were losing the battle he charged right to Rob himself Killing dozens of men that were in his way and came close to killing Rob aswell if only his sword didn't get stuck in someone's skull

Ned Stark is an important character in the story, both in the book as well as the series, but he is not the main one. You will see in time why. Remember Tywin Lannister's words about the importance of family. His family may be one of conspirers and usurpers, excepting one adorable halfman, but they also have their roles to play. In every place in Westeros,a s well as across the Narrow Sea, each main character has a story that will slowly unveil. With time you will realize who they all are and who are the ones that are just there to help them evolve and mature.
