F Zero 99 - Fire Field lap4 in Power Down

Only gets the last 30 seconds because that's all I could capture.
A mile ahead because I got a skyway on the final lap, tons of boost to burn before the finish line, a point lead to secure a win in the Grand Prix... but it wasn't the final lap, it was the third lap, and Fire Field is such a long track that the fourth lap starts when other tracks would be ending! I had barely enough distance that nobody could catch up and ruin me; someone almost did at 0:13 but crashed in their pursuit. This is the most stressful thing I've ever done in this game and I am going to try my best never to put myself in this position again...
Normally I play Falcon, but I have a soft spot for Stingray too.

yeah the point difference between us was tiny iirc and it all came down to this race; I was so hyper-focused on getting in front that I didn't realize it was only lap 3 lol Even after I got through the hard sections I was very afraid you'd hoarded skyway and were about to land on top of me even if I made it to the magnets

Provided you make no mistakes, it isn’t faster than playing the course normally (thank goodness, can you imagine?) unless you can avoid EVERY lucky bumper and skywayer, but there’s some unmistakable agility; I’d absolutely go for this after major blunders if it were just a single race outside of a GP.

my mistakes almost caught up to me, yeah - it was really hard to tread the line between going as fast as possible and still having controllable turns. I don't think I would have survived if everyone else in the race played perfectly...

Wow, actually a valid strategy for front running in lap 4. I never thought about it but it might be worth practicing powered down laps for rare instances like this when you need to keep the lead at all costs since Skyway is super strong in Fire Field.

as I wrote in another reply, yeah absolutely; the bumpers can force you into a "boost at both turns or lose all of your speed" situation in lap 3/4... but the third option is to go for broke and intentionally power down so you only lose SOME speed while having some agility around the bumpers. If it's already an all-or-nothing situation point-wise, there's no real difference between hobbling along at 375 speed in 6th place and crashing out. I just can't claim I planned this out lol, I had plenty of boost going into lap 4 and would've been able to boost twice without going into power down at all, but I was so focused I forgot what lap I was on!

Truly an F-Zero Moment! Considering we're constantly balancing our energy against gaining an edge through boosting, being put in this position is somewhat common, still being able to keep in the race completely out of juice sure is one heck of a rush, let alone WIN THE RACE! 🤩

The spectating eye can be a somewhat nervewrecking on moments like this but if you can pull this off with them watching it becomes so satisfying!

i had a huge lead going into the final lap and I managed to keep it long enough that the only time anyone got close was during the hardest section to boost in, but it would have been all over if anyone got a skyway

yeah, you can hear them dry boosting and they disappear on the minimap afterward. Very scary for me since I couldn't tell whether it was a full boost or not in the moment; all I saw was the overtake symbol! Situations like that are tough judgement calls because dry boosts cancel your spin like normal, but spinning is the only way to protect yourself. You either keep going and use it for the perfect fraction of a second or you crash out from them catching up naturally... I was saving it until the final stretch since I didn't want to hit the bumpers in the process and it almost cost me

For some reason the game never explains it, not even in a loading screen tip, but you can perform these weak boosts when at 0 energy by continuing to attempt to boost - it takes away what tiny bit of remaining health you might've had, so it's a last-ditch effort!

there were so many points where if I turned just a little worse or if I boosted one extra time I'd have scraped the wall and it'd be all over, between the turn on the gravel almost not clearing it and being forced to boost recklessly afterwards so I could dodge the guy behind me. Reaching the magnet section is such a huge relief because of how much easier it is from that point onward but even then I still had the fear that someone would come out of nowhere from a skyway and clothesline me

It is, but you get infinite boost in Power Down state. The boost isn't as strong as a normal boost, but its something to keep you from driving around at sub-400 speeds. If players are around in non-Power down though, you're basically dead if they target you.

You can boost at any time, but in power down the boost is much weaker, but chainable as you can see in this clip. You won't die at 0% until you take damage from any source other than boosting.

I've only really played the original F-Zero, so I'm used to low power decreasing speed. Does being in power down give you unlimited boost or something? I can't really tell what's going on

Your speed is crippled but you're allowed to perform weaker, stacking boosts that push you to around the same average speed as the machine's natural peak. It's very difficult to control because it restricts your turning like actual boosts do. It typically isn't faster than normal driving, but if you're dumb like me and start the entire final lap while out of power, the warped rules for acceleration end up pretty strong where sharp turns and hordes of bumpers are involved. I would have been KO'd immediately if I wasn't using these so-called "dry boosts".

It would be nice if the game mentioned this was possible. It does not make intuitive sense that your normal boost cuts off at 1hp but you can actually keep on boosting. Finding out this late feels like certain people have had an easy ride with an exploit few other people knew.

when you're out of energy, your natural top speed is gutted, but you can periodically perform mini-boosts that only last for a moment but can stack up in momentum. It's erratic and extremely hard to control compared to normal turning, but you can move at around your natural top speed (or faster than normal in Fox's case).

when in Power Down, you can do short, weak, but stacking boosts. In most situations, it isn't faster than driving normally (or survivable because getting sneezed on will KO you). Very difficult to control; I also used the brakes extensively here

Infinite Boost yes, but the boost lasts much shorter than normal and you have to spam it to keep up. In Power Down mode, you move much slower if you aren't boosting so the game kind of forces you to boost so that other players won't catch up to you, which can also cause you to boost into a bumper car or a wall.

blew everything i had entering lap 3 thinking it was the final lap, so I was a couple seconds ahead. Someone nearly caught up to me, though! I was frames away from getting KO'd by whoever it was behind me
