The F59PHI is definitely my favorite diesel locomotive. I really like the shape of them as well as the fact they look good in so many liveries. I also like them because I grew up around Los Angeles so I always saw them on both the Pacific Surfliner and metrolink when I was a kid.

As of mid-2022, most of the last remaining F59PHI now live new lives with Chicago's commuter rail service, Metra.

Thank you, Mike! I’ve always loved the f59phi. Especially the 15 surfliner engines. They look so sleek and nice in the blue and silver. Especially they way the blue lines wrap around the headlights. They all look fantastic. I am with these trains 24-7. I live in lake forest and am 500ft from the tracks. I see them go by out my window. Then there’s my work which is in Dana Point. My stall (I’m a autobody tech) is about 150 ft from the tracks, on a calm day a can feel the breeze of them go by, and catch the smell. I’m going to cry when these engines leave, probably literally. 453, 455, and 459 are my 3 favorites. Oh how I wish a could purchase one someday. I’m riding from Irvine to San Diego tomorrow morning and back. I’m down for a surfliner/coaster club if anyone else is? Or maybe something already exists? -Zac

Thanks, Zac! The Surfliner paint scheme has long been one of my favorites, and the F59's sleek look really makes the trains look nice. I don't know of a Surfliner or Coaster club, but that would be neat if one existed. I'd join!

CoasterFan2105 Cool! Well Oceanside was the last stop going south today due to track work. However I good a cool catch. Right after Oceanside few miles up a northbound surfliner broke down, they were 1 hour ahead of us. We passed them on our way down. It was engine 454, and my train was engine 453. When we turned around we met them and coupled up! 453 pushed our normal 6 surfliner cars AND pulled the other train with 6 cars and engine 454 in the back in neutral! I can’t believe she did it. I got a really lame video with my phone but I’ll upload it!

When I was little, I used to to going to the Alviso County park (First Clip of the video). I wish I still lived there so I could see those Aces and Amtrak California f59phi’s. I still visit there but all I see are sc-44 chargers. (I still love sc-44s). Thank you Mike.

I love the F59PHI and how EMD/GM collaborated to come up with a stunning look. The Surfliner sets were by far the most attractive train sets made since Amtrak began. I'm sad that they are being replaced. In fact their replacement is by far the ugliest passenger option they could have chosen. I love the style of the new F125s but the Caterpillar built units have been inoperable for Metrolink. The SC44 would be ok if they reworked the front end. Via has an attractive alternative to what has been delivered to Amtrak. Maybe with a new administration a larger investment could be made and a better solution could be found.

To us in the UK, the F59PHI pleasing to look at. We like our locos sculptured. One question; why are American locomotives so tall? Is it just historic convention, or something else?

There is no question that a lot of the passenger locomotives in particular are very tall and the F59 is one of (if not the) tallest. I think part of the reason for the F59PHI being so tall is so that it matches the height of the bilevel Superliner and Surfliner cars it pulls. Amtrak's P42DC locomotives aren't nearly as tall.

Passenger locomotives are usually built to make full use of available clearance (UK: loading gauge), especially in the US, since they are required by law to have a very strong body. By making them taller, some parts can be distributed vertically (such as dynamic brake located right over the engine) and the locomotive can be made shorter (hence, lighter). The F59PH/F59PHI is designed to run in all passenger lines except for a few old tunnels in the Northeast, especially New York. That allows it to be that tall. That allows it to have a body-on-frame construction that makes it much easier to service and repair (for a diesel), and also allows it to have a second diesel engine just to power the HEP (UK:ETS). The GE Genesis family, on the other hand, is designed to run on ALL Amtrak lines, so it has a lower roof. But its design required some compromises like a monocoque body, that makes it lighter for the same length (so it can be longer) but it's more difficult to service and repair.

Taller locomotives are by design generally safer in the event of an accident as well. Unlike many European places, often objects end up on the tracks that shouldn't be there, like cars and trucks. I've heard stories about Via Rail's sleek LRC units, and crews generally disliked them as they knew in an accident they were screwed. One near-miss with one had the engineer jumping right out of the cab even though it was evident a hard collision was unlikely to occur. GO trains were still run by CN and CP crews in the late 80s. Believe it or not the PHI sleek nose design was actually considered, but because crews didn't want it, the Canadian cab design was used instead. I believe the F40 cab design was considered as well, but was rejected due to their relatively poor safety aspects in collisions and no walkway. A number of safety and space related issues with the SC-44 units were addressed but were ignored. Much better for sleekness, but the odds are not in favor of the crew if something unfortunate happens.

The EMD F59PH is essentially just a shorter version of the EMD SDP40F, but instead of C-C wheel arrangement, it has the B-B wheel arrangement, and it also doesn't have the same issues the SDP40F had. For example, the SDP40F were equipped with Steam Generators for older inherited equipment, and also the tracks weren't maintained well then which led to accidents. If only the SDP40F's were equipped with Head End power generators, then they could have been the SDP40FH, and more of them could have been preserved.

Fun Fact: Most of GO's F59's have been sold from 2007-2014 due to the MP40's replacing them. Only 8 remain on the GO Roster. Most of the sold units are in service. Even some were sold to Metrolink.

I never knew until watching yours and AmtrakGuy365's videos on the PHI that the design was initially tendered by Caltrans, and the intent of the streamlined shape. I'm a Montrealer, so I'm familiar with exo's (previously AMT) units, and now have a much bigger appreciation for them. Also, our ex-GO PHs were rebuilt a few years ago at Juniata. The two types make up the bulk of exo's locomotive fleet, alongside Bombardier ALP-45DP that I expect could be sold at some point since their electric mode is basically useless now (see the REM project).

I love the F59I! I grew up with them on the Surfliners and Metrolinks and always thought they look iconic. Plus they pair perfectly with the superliner cars. Frankly the new charger locomotives are hideous and look very out of place.

Well, they’re gone. Amtrak has retired all of there f59phis from surfliner service. Most were sold to metra. God knows how long they’ll be there. It’s only a matter of time before metra buys sc44s and f125s. It won’t be the same without them. It will never be the same. Only a handful remain on Amtrak on the ncdot trains. Many computer railroads have them, but they will probably be gone soon, too. Rest In Peace, f59phi We all miss you.

Amtrak sold two F59PHI locomotives to Metra not to long ago. I've started noticing more P42s being used for Surfliner duties, must be acting as a filler locomotive until the SC-44s take over.
