Absolutely true info. As an example when we first started in to SPL comps, we had a Chevy Astro van with 12, 15" JL w0 each pair in a 9 cubic foot sealed box. (Suggested by JL) Went to a comp in Vegas and hit in the mid 140's. It hit low and mean setting alarms off for blocks. After that comp we went to a ported enclosure with a single MTX RFL in a Yugo and did constant 160s tuned at 63hz. The Yugo sounded like crap bur was loud, the astro van sounded clean and mean. Each box design serves a purpose. As Ive aged I tend to like sq and sealed boxes myself. But still like a well designed ported also.

been in the subwoofer game 20 years I'd consider myself very well educated with all things car audio. you did a excellent job explaining this. anyone watching pay close attention he's droppin info that most ppl do not understand and will set your audio system above other ppls systems. it's not all about power its about the correctly built box for your application. typically ported run very well in suv or a car with a back seat that goes down typically they don't perform as well in a sealed trunk environment use your time and energy building out what's best for your application that's the key not haveing a powerful sub or amp. additionally I see way to many people running CCA power and ground wires... don't do this if your serious about your system you should be running oversized high quality OFC copper wire with high quality terminals. and please stop grounding onto a painted surface it will never work correctly always bare metal then protect that connection with a sealant to prevent future issues. no matter what how big your power wire is your always limited by the smallest power or ground wire in your system. upgrade them all for optimal power flow. all these things will put you on the next lvl

@MBEnchlosures LLC one thing I was expecting you to say, sealed typically is smaller volume versus ported. That can be a real consideration at times. It's a different conversation, but I don't hear people talk much about passive radiator setups. I really really like it. You can get the tighter higher frequency response of a sealed box, and the added efficiency at lower frequency of a ported box. I've got a 10" that plays lower 20 Hz area with authority. Very musical box design.

I have three stereo integrity SQL 12s and ready to run them sealed in my car. I know that loading a surface always gains a little bit of output ( like facing your subs upward toward the glass and a hatchback for example). What are your favorite ways to improve the sound of a sealed install? I can either wall them directly up to where my rear seats are and seal off from trunk to eliminate the back wave or I can put the subs all the way in the back of the car and fire them into a chamber that comes all the way up to the opening and then seal that off from trunk. Iron law states that more space equal more bass and it also helps with the subs being further back from the driver's seat as it allows the wave of bass to develop further. I have seen diagrams from professionals stating there's always decibels to be gained when loading surfaces with sealed enclosures. With the subs facing each other and loading onto the boundaries and the air mass in the chamber I can't help but think it will be a significant gain over just walling them up flush against the trunk opening. Ideas, opinions, it's basically three 12s in the back of the car firing into a v shaped megaphone( with a MDF floor and ceiling on top of the three enclosures) that's mouth opens up into the listening area. I can't help but think it's going to sound good as it will take advantage of the horn loading effect like a hatchback. I don't want to slam 3K of legit power directly into my back window in a coupe lol!

It really depends on the ported box every box is not the same I've heard guys using pre fab enclosures and they sound like garbage you absolutely have to have the correct volume with the correct Port area and Port velocity and you want at least 10 DB of rise and should have a decent frequency band for instance my average enclosure that I build will play down to the low 20s high teens and up to 70 to 90 HZ with 10 to 15 DB of rise

I like sealed boxes with shyt tons of power and alot of woofers over a ported box with less power and less woofers. I can feel sealed bass more and its meaner and cleaner and just is so earthquake, however, i cant ever buy the best subs cause those mega subs with like rediculous insaine xmaxx want a ported box... So im stuck with mid grade subs usually, but they good.. People hear me forever away still.. I think that clean bass note travels better than the ported even though its louder.. not sure , just seems.

I have a good question for you. I’ll be getting the Kicker Q class 12” 42CWQ142 sub in my 08 Colorado extended cab. BUT my question is if I would be okay running it in a wider flat box that would span the width of the back wall with the seats removed so I can have space to put groceries in behind the seats and still be good. So can a speaker box be not as deep and wider than normal and be the same as a more cubed shaped box an still play 30 hertz and be good.

In regards to ported vs sealed, I think it all depends on where the box will be installed. I had a ported box in the trunk of my vehicle, and it sounded nice. Yet, when I took the same setup, and moved it to the back of a Tahoe, it didn't sound as nice. Going back to the ported box in the trunk to my car, it sounded nice, yet when I would lower the back seat (acces into trunk), it would hit harder. So I guess it all depends on where you'll install the box; I guess if the box and subs have more air. But in regards to having more air, the subs and box had plenty of air in the back if my Tahoe, yet they didn't sound good. It's still all a mystery. LOL

Basically, in a 4th order bandpass you're using the sealed box to change the properties of the subwoofer to make it better for the ported side. Now, imo outside of shear spl and giant walled builds, a standard ported box is gonna be better. But 4th orders definitely have great applications in certain areas.

@blakebrockhaus347
@blakebrockhaus347 3 жыл бұрын
Ik this is an old comment. But hopefully thisll be helpful. Motorforce plays a big role. A sub that can move far, but doesn't, won't get loud. The other, is that xmax is just linear excursion. You can push well past xmax, but it won't sound as good, and it'll be less efficient. DD tends to have reasonable xmax, but extremely high xmech. The DD USA line also has really fucking strong motorforce.

A ported box do roll off after tuning. But it will still be louder then a sealed enclosure about 3/4 of an octave below tuning. A correctly designd ported box i almost always superior. In my opinion a sealed enclosure is only better when space is limited, or you want your subwoofer to play below 20Hz. It is also much easier to build and design then a ported box.

sealed is better but these box makers make money selling ported because anyone can build a sealed box. ported sounds bad. Large sealed is best. my go to is two 15s sealed . a box designer has nothing to say to make a sale but with ported they talk endlessly bout tuning most say a box is tuned to 32 but its rob more like 55 hertz

i have an old sony hifi system from the early 90s that uses a quasie-sixth order series tuned bandpass. I didnt know what that type of enclosure is until now. the original sony woofer rotted so now its just a cheap lanzar sub. who ever designed that back in the day must have know a thing or two about tuning enclosures.

What is the formula to tune a sealed section of a 4th order to lower my drop off frequency?
@M.B.Enclosures
@M.B.Enclosures 4 жыл бұрын
Jermaine Crutchfield that is sub dependent...not all subs do well in a 4th. A 4th can only play as low as the subwoofer can only its sealed section

@@M.B.Enclosures I just hooked up 1 of my new SA12V2s last night in a sealed box a little smaller than spec and it's not smashin quite like I'd like. Would getting the full 1ft³ that it asks for really make a world of difference or could it be something else?
