Portland-Hillsboro (HIO) is a busy general aviation airport located 15 miles west of the larger Portland International in Hillsboro, Oregon. There is extensive flight training at the airport, a large number of based aircraft, and business and corporate aviation services that utilize the airport. The mix of pilot experience and aircraft capabilities makes HIO an interesting and challenging environment.
Visit www.faa.gov/hio for supplemental "pilot handbook" information on this airport including airport-specific cautions, information local controllers want pilots to know, airport communications, airspace details and other preflight planning resources.
0:56 - The airport configuration. Extra attention needs to be paid to runway assignment when arriving or departing HIO, as the runway numbering has been the source of confusion for pilots. As with any airport with parallel runways and staggered thresholds, the opportunity for wrong surface landings exists at HIO.
2:23 - A hotspot is located near the approach end of runway 31 left and taxiway Alpha 8.
3:50 - Another issue concerns aircraft taxiing southbound on Alpha and instructed to hold-short of runway 2-20. The hold-short line is located immediately after crossing taxiway Charlie, and seems to be confusing for some pilots.
4:30 - Another area for increased attention concerns aircraft taxiing from the Northeast T-hangars.
To address wrong surface events where an aircraft lines up to or lands on the incorrect runway, taxiway, or airport, the FAA released Arrival Alert Notices (AAN) at various airports with a history of misalignment risk. View the HIO Arrival Alert Notice here: www.faa.gov/airports/runway_s...
The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines them with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at www.faa.gov/FromTheFlightDeck
