Am I drawing with graphite these days? Nah... Do I even have time for drawing or painting in general? Nope! Am I really that good in drawing anyway? Not really! Do I still need these? Yeah! Was this an awesome review! Hell yeah!!!!

Pretty much my attitude as well. I think I draw well but hardly have the time to do it. Yet, a part of me really desires a pencil set like these.

@@renzo6490 its more like: i need to have them in case i need them and the company doesnt produce them anymore or i dont have the money then. its a also about mini collections of things that dont expire. i wouldnt for example get it if it was a a set of watercolours as these once opened ( even when not) have a limited lifespan whereas graphite pencils or some rollerball pens can outlive us.

Interesting. They are looking good. That said, graphite shine never bothered me. If the final piece is too shiny, a workable fixative or matt acrylic varnish and a piece of sandpaper will do the trick.

Older artists tend to be more deliberate on their presentation, and I prefer it.

@@beatrixpendragon I think you're misunderstanding 'modern' art content. Actually, I'd consider it to be far more 'deliberate' than this video. KZfaq art content creators study trends and audiences to maximise their views and reach and earnings. It's all extremely deliberate, in an attempt to make a career out of content creation and to continue to make lots of money. This guy on the other hand is making videos to inform actual artists. Its more deliberate in that his video has a clear goal, but I doubt he considered how each part of his video could make him go viral. That being said, I prefer this type of video a lot, lot more. It's just unfortunate that KZfaq these days caters to general audiences rather than niches so video creators like this don't have as much chance to get exposure :(

Hello, I started with pencils, I didn't mind the shine, but the lack of real blackness. When I saw the contrast that can be achieved with carbon and learned how to apply it for smooth transitions or lighter shades, I rarely go back to pencils since then. You could try applying charcoal powder with brushes (I mainly use filbert brushes and flat brushes, small and large, and tortillon / blending stump, I even draw small parts like leaves with them). But I use them mainly where there are shadows, which is most of the drawing. I also use Staedler Mars Lumograph Black for more precise parts, such as eyes or individual hairs, because they are easier to sharpen than carbons.
@eddiemcgrath8536

I'd add Pierre Noir charcoal pencils to that, a much richer black than carbon pencils and faber pitt charcoal pencils very good for sharpening.

I've been intrigued by charcoal powders with brushes, but.. Do you find that you need to wear a mask when working with charcoal powders over a period of time in a single sitting? Just curious about potential health hazards over time, inhalation of the powders as they are left to open air and brushed about since you'd be in close proximity.
@renzo6490
@renzo6490 2 жыл бұрын
@@strandedinseattle9931 ...When working with charcoal, you do need to be aware that it does create a lot of dust. Don't blow the dust off by mouth, as you can inhale the fine particles, which may cause lung irritation. In general, drawing charcoal is not toxic. Charcoal is made from willow or vine (typically grape vine), and this natural stick is the purest form. Most compressed charcoals use natural gums as binders, so they are also generally safe. A sharp tap of the drawing board will encourage particles to drop from the page. Use a wet cloth or mop to clean surfaces, never sweep it up.
@celticwinter
@celticwinter 2 жыл бұрын
@@strandedinseattle9931 BASF did studies on possible health implications of carbon black pigments on workers a while back. These pigments have a lot smaller medians/means in their size distributions in comparison to most other usual pigments. They managed to be allowed to do autopsies on some workers that were around these pigments for extended periods of time. Believe it or not, they are actually small enough to pass the blood/brain barrier, which is the reason they found accumulated carbon in those brains. That being said, the carbon black you're using is very unlikely to have that sort of size distribution and the "potentially cancerous" in those black pigments is more of a safety precaution - as far as I know. So I actually wouldn't worry. Even in those workers there wasn't any implication beyond that it did accumulate.

Graphite was always trouble when scanning or photographing linework. I switched to the General's no. 555 layout pencil which is pure black, erases pretty well and isn't waxy. But of course once I change my workflow over to 100% digital painting and get rid of a lot of my supplies, they bring this one out... Now I have to try it.

Smooth surfaces are more reflective eg Bristol Board. The trouble with graphite shine is the way it builds up, which is hard to predict. These Fabers may be useful for more intensive, darker, moody areas. I’m going to give them a try! My go to graphite’s are Tombow and Mitsubishi which are so consistent and a pleasure to use. I like the thoroughness of your approach.

Excellent review as always Jon mate. I have this set to review as well but when I have tried to reach out to Faber Castell UK and US and of course their HQ, I can’t get anyone to say one way or the other if there is Carbon in the mixture. Of course I know they have to be careful when divulging ingredients to the public, but I think it’s important we know what it is making them so dark, especially from the perspective of a reviewer. I’ve had this problem before when a company says their product is highly lightfast and when I ask them if they have used Blue Wool or ASTM, I get sent all over the place being avoided like the plague 😂😂, which speaks louder than a direct answer I think. Wonderful video as always my friend, hope you are well and talk to you soon.

I’ve always enjoyed the Lumograph pencils i tend to press to hard when trying for darker tones and they really helped me to use a lighter hand. These look great though and have a very good gradation between their tones, something that is expected of FC their wax colored pencils have great tone gradation between the hues and each hues values. I do love a good 9H pencil though, and neutral F; something I just don’t get from artist sets. This of course comes from my family background in technical drafting and blueprinting.

E aqui no Brasil eles custam $1,50. Gostei muito do video. O Sr é sempre fantástico, parabéns professor, desejo sucesso sempre, grande abraço.

I've had my Worison pencils with 14b before even heard of Faber Castel' 14b. It is now second to my FC matt set. The FC matt still shines but noticeably less. Warison is bit softer, feels better, but tends not to fill the tooth of the paper as much as FC matt. From a front view, Warison matches the darkness, but as said, shines more from an angle.

@@smoothie77drawingpainting i haven't been able to at least until the end ofvthe month. Why don't you do a drawing using these and do a second drawing using the carbon pencils for comparison.

Instead of using the side of the pencil or a stump to blend, use the sharp tip to work between the weave of the paper. Roll the pencil a little with your fingers as you work to help maintain a sharp tip. Use an F pencil. It’s a very slow process but with careful control you can get very dark with no shine out of pure graphite. Work around micro-particles of dark if you want an area darker. Pick the particles out with a sharp tip on your kneaded eraser if you want to maintain your tone level. Truly beautiful drawings can be achieved this way. Using a good paper helps this process as well.

I have used Mars Lumigraph by Staedler and it is matte graphite. They have been out for quite awhile.They have about 4 pencils in a tin and since I use FC products the source I use would also carry these. The comparison would be interesting cause I really love the Lumigraph because of that reason. Technically they were first but who cares right? Enjoy your pencils and future projects.

I was the first person to review the Lumograph black on youtube when they first came out, yes they are dark and Matt, but they don't look right with graphite, whereas the Faber matt does, there is a huge difference

@@smoothie77drawingpainting Your review comes at the right time! And with the exact info I was looking for, thank you! Was trying to justify getting these pencils considering how little I use regular graphite pencils (mainly mechanical pencils for me these days). I have Steadtler black but those have carbon in and they're pretty hard to work with and don't mix well with normal graphite, unless you don't mind the look.

@@smoothie77drawingpainting good thing then because I do multimedia and don’t want the shine with the work that I do. It ‘s great for someone else though and I don’t need the whole set of many pencils so it’s all good.

As far as I know, there's no way to change physical properties of graphite without changing the material itself. It's a crystaline formation after all.

Come on Faber, cut the cellophane. A thin cardboard covering to prevent the tin opening or the tin getting marked would be better. Personally I didn’t think either are necessary.
