Inspired by this video I tried it out for myself as I have both cloth and plastic containers. Here are my results from SE Michigan Ambient temp 85° Temp of plastic pots between 80 and 90 Fabric pots between 70 and 74. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's just too small of a sample size but holy cow what a difference! Always best to do your own research even when the video is a trusted source of information.

I think if heat really is a concern you can just buy a roll of reflectix and insulate whatever material. Different cloth bags are going to be a different material and have differing insulating properties where as the plastic used in pots are a lot more predictable just because the materials are more standardized.

The humidity is very low where I live and we get a very strong afternoon breeze. Fabric pots loose a lot of water under these circumstances, even with 4 inches of shredded fall leaves on top. This situation gets much worse when it gets over 85F. I found wrapping them with corrugated cardboard helps. For me, it was a failed experiment. This year I planted everything in beds or nursery pots ranging from 5 to 32 gallons.

I’ve had these same growbags going on four years in all different sizes and absolutely love them. They hold up really well here in the hot Florida sun and the soil doesn’t dry out as much. Handles are great to move them around. The black plastic pots end up cracking and last maybe a year here.

@@shortari5543 Ok, that might be it... I live in a winter-rainfall area, so the only water my pots get during summer is what I give them. And on top of that our summers are hot (most days 85-90 F) and also breezy. So the straw mulch I use doesn't help one bit to stop them from drying out within a couple of days!

Btw - my fabric pots are all 14 gallon. My herbs are all planted in smaller terracotta pots, and they did not dry out as quickly (and completely) as my fabric pots. I think fabric pots will be fine in areas where you receive weekly rain. If you don't, they take up too much water and time.

One of the main proponents of using cloth pots is cannabis growers, especially for indoor grows. From what I've seen and read, because of the root pruning, you can supposedly grow a bigger plant in a smaller cloth pot than a plastic pot. I don't know if this is scientifically the case but it's what they say. I picked up some 5 gal Smart Pots (one of the first companies to make fabric pots) on clearance from Home Depot about 4 years ago. Someone gave me 3 cannabis cuttings (legal to grow here) and I decided to try rooting them and I grew them in the fabric pots. They grew very good and very big outside during that summer but since I didn't plant any in plastic pots I don't know if they grew any different than if they were in plastic pots. The Smart Pots are made much better than those cheaper Amazon pots. They are thicker material made from recycled soda bottles and they are made in the USA. I've heard that some of these cheaper cloth pots from China can leach chemicals that can kill the plants so I would stick with a name brand like Smart Pot or other US made brand. I wound up giving the harvested plants to my cousin who is a cannabis user and he said they produced very good cannabis but I have no idea if it was better than a plastic pot.

The video was informative! I wasn't aware of the some of the other claims, so it was interesting to watch you address them. I'm using fabric pots on plants that will stay potted for a long time. The self pruning feature is the main reason I started using them, so I'm glad that you mentioned that in your video. I made several pots from weed barrier fabric last year. (The fabric is rated for 30 years.) They're holding up pretty well. A roll of fabric is relatively inexpensive especially when you take into account the price of larger pots! My pots are kept on shallow trays filled with water, so I don't have to water it often.

Shipping space and the handles are the primary benefit of bags. Ease of movement will encourage gardeners to take advantage of micro climates around their property. Bags aren't rigid though so every time you move the plant you are breaking the roots and some plants aren't going to like being moved around. Others will appreciate it. You can also fluff the soil in a bag to prevent compaction so that's a good thing for drainage. S You can get a lot of bags in a truck and they really are easy to move around. The disadvantage is they rot in the desert sun very quickly. Pots will also shatter in the desert sun, but it takes longer. Another advantage of bags is you can fold the edges back or in and pin them so you can use less soil for smaller plants without shading the base of the plant. So I'd say for short term grows bags are probably better as long as you don't move the plant all that often. For long term pots are better.

I've used bags for two years and last year I added a few plastic pots into the mix. The first thing I noticed with the plastic compared to bags was I had to water WAY less with the plastic pots. I have several bags and I'll continue to use them but as they wear out I'll be replacing with plastic. For me the only draw back to plastic is the cost. I want to start growing potatoes in containers and have decided to go with at least 10 gallon containers. 10 gallon or larger plastic containers are A LOT more expensive than grow bags of the same size. Thanks again for sharing such useful info.

I like plastic pots for a reason I recently discovered -- Measurement. When I'm sifting and mixing soil with compost I have to average how much soil I'm going to need to lay down on the tarp. I can tell right now that 1 5-gallon white paint bucket = 1 5-gallon black pot after mixing out the rocks and sticks (Fox Farms Happy Frog). I just helps to look at soil and ask "how many buckets is that?" They're also not floppy so I can place my sieve right on top. I did just order some 3-gallon cloth bags for my mint and basil and such just for a change to see how it works though. Thanks for posting!

Good info, some things to consider. If you live in a hot climate or in a tropical/subtropical zone and have a long growing season, veggies may be in the containers for 7,8 or 9 months. If you use larger grow bags and grow 2 or more plants in a single grow bag, then their roots can certainly consume the soil mass in the bag and air pruning can be beneficial. Plastic pots do not do well if they are exposed to sun and 90-100 degree days for 3-4 months out of the year - they will bake and when you go to move that pot a big piece of plastic will break off - has happened to me here in Texas many times. So in my situation grow pots are a better choice in some ways. They are more convenient to move around with the handles, and while moving 2-5 gallon plastic pots are not much of an issue, if you have to move 10, 15 or 20 gallon pots, that is an issue - you can fairly easily move a larger grow bag even if it is just dragging it by the handle. I have grown in plastic pots and fabric grow bags both, and now I have a container garden with 70 grow bags - predominantly 7 gallon to help align the watering schedules. As far as being biodegradable? Probably would break down in the same amount of time as that egg shell you put in the planting hole....

Hello and good day. I like your advice alright I have watched you on maritime gardening many times. I have been using those fabric reusable grocery bags from the dollar store with .25 cents each. They work good but only last one year because of deteriorating from the sun I guess. So I started to put one inside the other or bunching them up together and putting mulch and cards around the outside so the sun dong dry them out. But I’m still not happy. So this year I am putting those used bags in plastic pots to see the good from both worlds. I put small sticks on the bottom and sides between the plastic and bag. Let’s see how that works out. The air pruning works good in the cloth but they dry out easy. I bought the same fabric pots you got there and I could not find what they are made of. Usually they are made of recycled water bottles. I guess to promote how safe the material is. Walmart bags last longer but are more money like 1.50$ each. They hold about 20 litres of soil. I also use them inside old laundry baskets. I picked up all my plastic pots from the recycling bins.

So for house plants, the cloth bags will prevent root circling. However as another commenter pointed out, roots will avoid growing to the sides of the cloth pot because the soil is too dry there due to evaporation. I also thought the increased oxygen entering through the bag would help plants grow faster.

Thank you once again for a very helpful, evidence-based video! I bought 35 fabric pots for my tomatoes and NEVER AGAIN... They dry out so quickly you have to use a huge amount of water over the summer... it's a daily commitment to prevent the container from drying out. And all this water left my tomatoes flavourless. Then they dried out once in a heatwave and I could never get them fully moist again - the container soil formed a dry block with a few channels where all the water ran through, and my tomatoes suffered as a result.

The dry block and channelling more of an issue with peat moss soil than that cloth pots...
@jayduplessis7698
@jayduplessis7698 2 жыл бұрын
@@kendallmallon1763 I didn't use any peat moss in my soil mix. I can't remember the exact ratios, but the mix equated to about 50% compost (made up of regular compost, chicken manure and cow manure) and 50% inorganic (made up of sandy potting soil, clay garden soil and coco coir). The dry blocks that formed was because the container dried out completely - and they dried out completely because fabric pots dry out far quicker than non-fabric pots... especially when temperatures go over 90 or you have windy days. You can't miss a day or two of watering in that weather - the top and sides of your soil become bone dry and the water runs down the sides.

Did you use any top dressing? I don’t use mine for tomato’s I use grow boxes for those. You can put the bags on a long tray that will hold water underneath like a drip tray. I do that for some flowering plants that need more moisture. My fruit trees grow very well in them.
@jayduplessis7698
@jayduplessis7698 2 жыл бұрын
@@shortari5543 I used a thick layer of straw. But that does not help at all, because the sides dry out first and contract, leaving a gap between the sides of the pot and the soil block - and that speeds up the drying. I placed all my pots on top of bare clay soil, so their bottoms remained moist (and their roots could grow through to find more moisture), which is the only reason they survived. But they weren't thriving. The smaller crops that I planted in these pots after the tomatoes seem to LOVE them though - I've never had basil this big and lush! And my salad is also looking happy (I placed the pots in a shady area). So I think in areas with hot, dry summers like mine they're not a good idea for large, thirsty crops (unless you use very large pots).

I have question I hope you will answer. In another video you mentioned how organic fertilizers take a long time to release their nutrients (NPK) to the plants , especially in container gardening. So a chemical fertilizer is best for quick results. My question is is it better then to amend your container mix with organics After the growing season, to have it ready for the following year? Or does the soil need the plant to help it break down the fertilizer? Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Grew 3 medical plants last year. Two were plastic one was in a fabric pot.. Grew 1 indeterminate tomato in a plastic pot. I drilled lots of small holes in the plastic pot sides to simulate air pruning. I got all 3 plastic pots free from a neighbour. The one fabric pot was lent to me by a neighbour. In my opinion the claim of air pruning seemed to demonstrate exceptional root development in all 4 containers. No roots circled the pot in all 4. Plant growth albeit subjective was excellent. I solved the handle issue by attaching a rope under the lips of the plastic pots. The cloth pot seemed to cause the water to run through the fabric vs into the soil. This didn't happen with the plastic. In my opinion watering was a bit less in the plastic pots but that may have been due to the strains vs the pots themselves. When I dumped the plant roots out from the pots the fabric pot was a bit more difficult due to roots growing into the bag but it didn't damage the bag. I washed and cleaned it and it seemed none the worse for wear. I'm very attentive to the plants and tend to notice subtle differences. I'll be using my plastic pots this year given the ease of use, plant and root development and clean up in the fall. I use straw for mulch on all the plants for water retention, weed control, pests etc.

People claiming evaporation keeps the soil cooler are ignoring the fact that the amount of cooling it based on a surface area to volume ratio. That ratio is too small for even fabric pots to have a significant difference. I got some to try doing potatoes in. One thing to try in keeping pot soil cool is to wrap the pot in tin foil. Something I've been meaning to try, as I live at 6000ft and the sun is awfully strong. BTW, craigslist is a good source for cheap / free plastic pots.

You should try the best. The root trapper bags by root maker. They are white so they are cooler. They do a great job of making a fibrous root system so they take up fertilizer & water more efficiently and they last many years. I have some that are ten years old and are still holding together just fine. They do however need water more often because they are well aerated. I agree with you that in many cases they aren't needed outside the nursery industry where the root system is important for rapid establishment of trees and shrubs or other plants that are to be transplanted.

There is a channel called Allotment Diary. He gets excellent yields of potatoes from large plastic pots of 35ltrs, I think. They have large holes around the edge, and he drills a few more in the bottom. Once the pots have been filled, and seed potatoes planted. He rakes out a shallow trough a little wider than the pots. Then places the pots, and rakes the surrounding soil back round the base. I'm sure the same thing would work well for tomatoes outside, in at least a 30 cm (12in) pot. If you get a decent enough summer to make growing tomatoes outside worthwhile.

Everybody should do their own experiments, results will vary widely depending on type of plant, growing medium, location etc.

The reason the roots are not circling is because the around the edge of the cloth pot is that it's generally wetter in the centre because of evaporation at the edges. Roots tend to grow towards damper soil.

What about the benefits of root aeration?
@jayduplessis7698
@jayduplessis7698 2 жыл бұрын
If you have the right soil mix you won't need extra root aeration in a container. I think the whole point is that this "aeration" in fabric pots is too much - they dry out too quickly. It helps to prevent plants getting rootbound, but this is not so important with annuals like vegetables. It's more important to not have the soil dry out / water less.
@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 2 жыл бұрын
If the roots needed more air, they would grow next to the pot, like in plastic pots. Most people using pots grow in very loose soil where aeration is not an issue.

I think this May be a good foundation to make a decision. However, you’re not comparing the same plants. Also, at the end of the day, the benefit one looks for is vegetable yield, size, quality etc. That is the experiment that really should be done. There is one video by cookingfordads that did it with tomato. Results were more yield with plastic, but significantly larger size tomatoes in fabric. A side note on that video is that he had jalapeños that never did much but when grown in fabric, big jalapeños and a whole bunch. So I think this video lacks the big question, how well do veggies grow in each type of pot

Agreed. Bottom line is how productive either type of container is. This comparison doesn’t address it at all.

I bought 35 of them last year for my tomatoes - and now I'm regretting it! They just dry out too quickly in summer. However, they do work fine for other, smaller crops - especially if you can reduce the amount of sun hitting the pots, or grow in the cooler seasons.

Another corporate scam. Thanks for doing the test and comparing all the variables. I'm sticking with plastic. I save all my 5 and 2 gallon paint pails and drill a few holes in the bottom after giving them a complete cleaning. I've never had to replace one. More money for seeds ! One more thing, if I put a pot outside in direct sun I like to go with a white pot over a black one so it doesn't cook the plant.
