I asked a curtain making business in a strip mall near me if they could make up some cushions and pillow slips/covers for me using their scrap curtain materials. Next time I went in there, they had a whole range of pillow covers, cushion covers etc. using their own scraps. This was back in the early 80's. It kind of surprised me at the time they weren't using those quarter yard scrap bits and pieces from curtains. The lacy sheer curtain scraps made some pretty ruffles or "faux" covers for pillows, for example.

That’s awesome, it’s great way to use up all your resources and save money, I don’t get why people/companies think it’s better to just throw them away, you’re basically throwing money away.

ok, thing to remember when making a pillow with scraps is that it will also make it VERY lumpy, so if you don't mind that go on ahead. IF you do, i suggest that you put a low loft batting cut about 1/4" smaller that your cloth all the way around ( or more depending on how much seam allowance you want), this will help with the "lumpy" factor. i do make these just as described, with the dimentions pf 19"x 14.5" & 24" x 19" and 3-4" gaps and don't use a batting sew them up with and invisible ladder stitch, and give them to my local vet. dogs/cats don't care if they are lumpy.

Thank you for the tip, I realized after that I does make the pillow lumpy I made a couple for my lining room and I have to adjust the insides all the time but the next time I make them I’m gonna try your method, thank you!

I agree. Also I prefer scrap fabric projects that show off my fabric rather than hiding it inside something. I know some people cut up their tiny scraps so small that it's almost down-like and use it to stuff toys, pin cushions etc.

Hi: you are great, like all of this, I'm a 72 year old sewer but can still learn from people like you. Those jeans are awesome. One thing I came up with was making throw pillows out of clean, almost new place mats from the thrift store, I also make cloth handbags with them. God Bless.

Very good ideas to reduce waste. I especially LOVE the jeans. Another use of scraps that I do is to make bias tapes of multi-colors and patterns, looks great on throw pillows, placemats, etc.

I run a small zero waste business called Reincarnated Crafts and also keep all my offcuts! Thin strips work really well to make scrappy bunting, just cut into a pieces about 2cm x 8-10cm, no not to be precise at all. The the pieces to a length of string or cord, 2m is good to use around the home or on a Christmas tree! The smallest scraps I just chop up and use to fill hanging ornaments much like with your cushion stuffing. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I keep all of my bigger scraps to one day make a big "memory quilt". The really small pieces I collect in a bag and whenever it is full I give it to a friend who is a kindergarden teacher so she can put it in the creative room for the children to use in their creativitiy when crafting etc. I feel that's a win win, because nothing gets wasted and the children have more different materials to use and experiment. And also: crafting materials are expensive!

In my village in India they use old saree to make quilts. Earlier all the teaching used to be done by hand by womenfolk in the house. Then someone commercialized and these women would go home to home, the household used to give them all their old used clothes+ sarees and the would take a small fees and make a quilt by hand for you in a day. Nowadays they use sewing machines to stitch it up. One of the most softesr and breathable quilts that can be

I just started sewing, mostly because I see so many cool fabrics in thrift shops and yard sales and want to turn them into something else, or Frankenstein pieces of otherwise ruined cloths into something cool. I think I'll start saving my scraps and eventually use them to make a bed for my dog! Do you know if there's any way to add volume or "fluff up" bits of fabric? Great video!

What are you using for fabric weights? I've not started sewing yet other than for testing stitch specs when I can find a spec. to compare with. I've only been learning the sewing machine restore to rescue some free machines... that turned into investing in a few treadle machines (and one hand crank grinder for a DIY hand crank conversion) for off the grid use, now totaling 45 machines. Seems neat and I'm looking forward to sewing some projects with fabric I've purchased and sourced from the Goodwill Stores to re-purpose. Getting closer to sewing some projects at least. Thanks for sharing!

Do you know easy ways to save scraps from the landfills? I've been able to get unsellably small pieces of fabric from charity shops when I needed them for a charity project (for free) but after that I was denied any, and was told they sell it on to fashion industry folks. Who presumably still bin some of it.

I just save my own scraps or ask friends, family and followers if they ever want to donate anything. But I know of fab scrap in NY where their whole business is saving scraps from brands and reselling it by the pound they have an online shop aswell.
