I have completed the two facades on the old Town Hall. One is now a cheap-and-cheerful bed shop, whilst the other is a cheesy nightclub called Club Passion. In this video I show how I used card and simple materials to complete the facades, including adding advertising in the windows, a lovely shop entrance, and the elegant quoins on the side of the building.

Michael, I am VERY grateful for the information and tips you have shared because I have been attempting most of these effects for ten years. Thank you for sharing this goldmine of tips! I don't have the time to experiment or search out information constantly, so THANK YOU!!!! Your work is exceptional and exactly the effects I am trying to achieve. Kits are not even an option because of the scale with which I work (S), and the design styles generally available (American or Continental). Cheers!!! I hope to meet you one day to thank you in person!

It all looks fantastic, Michael. You must be an exceptionally observant person to take in all the details and distill them into Chandwell. The doorway to Ben's Beds is a tour de force - so many grotty shops in old premises, selling beds, or sofas, carpets or whatever, had those kind of entries. But I never really took in the way they looked until seeing your N-guage version. Thanks. Tom

Michael Liking how both the front side of High St is coming on. soon you’ll have a complete view along High St under the Viaduct to the back wall. You’ll also have the two different full towers either side of the Viaduct. Linking Chandwell Grand Victorian Vision to the Post War Hope of a Bright Future for All together. The Old Town Hall is coming along well, I wonder what the final building on High St will be. Perhaps the small road alongside the Viaduct and crossing the beck is Viaduct Lane. Ian

At 11:41 a.m. the Club Passion cleaners have knocked off for a cuppa, exhausted after yet another cleaning attempt on the sticky fake Axminster carpets in the bar area. Meanwhile, Ben, of Ben's Beds is planning yet another advertising campaign to try and shift a few more of those dodgy matresses. I wonder what next for Chandwell? Maybe a skate park, or a derelict building that the council have plans for? Superb, Michael, a world in miniature.

This is really getting nicer every passing day. The effect of the brick and stone texture and the slight relief of the quoins gives it even more realism, and you can't nearly tell it's only printed paper. Also, love the Commercial you've made as introduction. the way you added the classic "le roi du matelas" line (cheaper would be illegal) is spot on !

Cutting that beveled edge: Find a cheap matte cutter for picture frames. You should get a sweet 45 degree every time. I've had one on my list for a couple years. I THINK some have adjustable angels as well. Even better.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
That’s good advice and I did consider it. However, the cheapest one I found was about £30. I’ve only needed to do an angled cut twice in three years and I couldn’t justify a cost-per-cut of £15! My scalpel technique is far from perfect but the result was acceptable. I’d be keen to hear your thoughts/advice on the dome in last Friday’s episode. I’m happy with the result but I bet you have a more effective technique of getting to it… 👍

I do not know if you had this in the UK, but: In Germany there is the bed/mattress store ("Matratzen Concord"), some kind of a running joke: It is everywhere, but you never see any customer in there. So many stories, what they really do. Good to see "Ben's Beds" is a honourable store, no mafia, special smokable plants or secret world domination organisation involved. I really like your advice how to cut those ancles to fit perfectly. My fingers are still well, too. Have a relaxed holiday time, Michael. All the best Valentin

Hi Michael, fab video as usual. I see you used Matt varnish - would you suggest I do this to protect card buildings and structures where they are likely to be next areas that will be ballasted (with 50/50 water and PVA). Keep up the great work. Jeff
@Chandwell
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! I added four coats of varnish in the areas where I may accidentally spray water, and six coats along the bottoms of walls that have the ballast sitting against them. I didn't get any problems when ballasting.

Hello! I've been doing a lot of card building lately and I've found a slight problem with my card fraying and expanding when it gets damp was painting, even doing very thin coats with an airbrush. Do you have any tips for avoiding this? Painting the edges with a matte varnish or something first to seal it all?
@Chandwell
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
Hello! I have never had that problem. I sometimes get card fraying if my blade is not sharp enough, but I've not encountered card expanding before, even when I brush on paint or varnish. I have heard that some people seal the edges of their components with a layer of PVA glue to stop fraying -- maybe try that?

Haha, yes. However, considering everything else about Chandwell is dreary and old and dirty and broken, I took the decision to have every single clock telling exactly the same time - "Chandwell Time" is 11:41 (AM). It is a matter of great civic pride in Chandwell. :)

why not make it period to victorian times rather than a victorian pound shop? that would never happen
@Chandwell
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean by “Victorian pound shop” because I’ve made it a 1990s bed shop, architect’s office and night club. I’ve not made it it’s original Victorian Town Hall because it is 1993 in Chandwell and the council moved to more modern accommodation sometime in the late 1970s, leaving the building unoccupied until Club Passion, Ben’s Beds, and the architect moved in. If you take a walk around Bradford, Halifax, Shipley, or anywhere else, you will see that at this does happen, all the time. The original town hall in Sowerby Bridge became Lloyds Bank before they too moved out. Ben’s Beds is based on a famous Leeds carpet shop that in the 1990s made a beautiful old church look almost exactly like I have made Ben’s Beds here in Chandwell’s old town hall.
