Goku always had that plot armor which solved every issue. It wasn't really inspiring to watch a warrior fight when you already knew he will end up winning somehow. But Vegeta does not have that. So when he actually does win, it felt much more rewarding. It made you thought "Damn, when I am losing, I can still get days when I am winning" So as a Kid, I always picked Vegeta over Goku.
