Face blindness is a cognitive disorder characterized by the inability to recognize or differentiate faces.
• In face blindness, other aspects of visual processing (e.g, object discrimination) and intellectual functioning (e.g decision making) remain contact.
• Depending on the severity of the impairment, some people with the condition may only have difficulty recognizing a familiar face including family members, partners, and even friend, some may struggle to differentiate or identify unknown faces or people they don’t know too well, and others may have problems even recognizing their own faces in the mirror or in the photos.
• Also known as prosopagnosia, face blindness can have a severe impact on everyday life. A person with the condition may avoid social interactions, have difficulty forming relationships both in personal and professional setting, and develop a social anxiety disorder.
• There are two types of prosopagnosia: developmental (congenital) and acquired.
• Face blindness is sometimes associated with developmental disorders, such as autistic spectrum disorder, Turner syndrome and Williams syndrome
CAUSES
Developmental (congenital) prosopagnosia is a congenital disorder present at birth. Most people with congenital prosopagnosia may fail to develop the ability to recognize faces. It appears to run in the families, which makes it likely to be the result of a genetic mutation or deletion. Many people with the condition have reported at least a parent or sibling who has problems recognizing faces.
Acquired prosopagnosia is rare and it is thought to be caused by impairment, abnormalities, or damage of the right fusiform gyrus, a fold in the brain. This area in the brain is responsible for coordinating the neural system that affects facial memory and perception.

I've heard that facial blindness can also accompany Dyscalculia, a math learning disability. Your sense of direction can be affected, as well. The good news is that you may be brilliant with words, singing, creativity, logic, and critical thinking. So, it all balances out.

I think it's common to have multiple forms of neurodiversity. I am autistic and have face blindness, synaesthesia, dyspraxia, "perfect pitch" and hyperglossia I think it's called? I speak seven languages and can learn them like a child.

Hard for me to recognize actors/actresses in different movies without reading the cast list. My wife spots them in a heartbeat no matter how they had their make up or how they've aged. Unfortunately she can't remember their names to save her life, but I can zing them out in a snap. We can't function w/out one another haha.

I am probably one of the worst people to watch movies with, every time a character goes off screen or especially if they change hair styles I will forget who they are and ask. This happens probably 10 times per movie.

I had no problem in recognizing faces, but yesterday when my neighbor gave me a lift, I mistook him for my milkman and traveled with him. Another such incident that happened to me, I met my close friend after a while and I did not recognize him. 😢

I would walk the dog and only know other dog walkers by their dog breed . Following characters on TV 📺 was hard especially if 2 had blonde hair and were males . 4 daughters I was delayed telling them apart if they poked head around the door 🚪. I blamed my meds but it could have been my functional neurological disorder.

I can tell people apart by their shoes D: Or their voices. Honestly, I thought this was normal until I read that it was an actual medical diagnosis.

After living in China for 8 years, I came back to Canada, and noticed I couldn't recognize white faces very well anymore. Especially when out of context. In China, my brain seemed to rewire itself to really recognize the differences in Asian faces and didn't bounce back when I returned.

Adapting to new environments can reshape our perceptual biases. Your experience reflects the brain's remarkable plasticity in tuning to the prevalent facial features, which may persist even upon returning to familiar settings.
