Live long and prosper? Nichelle Nichols sure has. At the height of the American civil rights movement, she played “Star Trek’s” Lieutenant Uhura-then one of television’s few confident, strong Black female characters. It was a trailblazing role she nearly walked away from-until a certain legendary activist and super fan intervened. Who knew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Trekkie?

Star Trek is the gold standard for Inclusivity done right with casting, they had a cast that was more diverse than many shows today in a time that was far more conservative than today and the show became a cultural institution, mostly because Star Trek did it in a matter of fact way and did not draw attention to the diversity and make it feel forced. The characters acted like it was normal for them and the audience accepted it.

Exactly. This is why SJWs are having resistance because what they are trying to do is force diversity where it's not needed. Instead of creating new stories and relying on the story to be driven by a diverse cast that is warranted, people want to force diversity in areas where it shouldn't be.

Who would’ve thought that casting through qualifications is better than casting through ethnic diversity. Nichelle Nichols was qualified for her role, and race was not involved at all.

Oh how we have fallen, as a long time fan, it was never brought attention to the diverse cast in anyway, they were just characters like any other, gene Roddenberry knew we'd be past all this bullshit in the future.....but Jesus these days it's s nightmare ! They literally ruined STD with it.

@@hanniffydinn6019 This is one of the things I love about The Orville. The character interactions, despite the comedic tone, seem so genuine. Everyone celebrates their differences without focusing on them. Differences are approached with curiosity, rather than swept under the rug in an attempt to make everybody the same.

I think it's often forgotten how progressive chekov and sulu were as well as uhura. Integrating a Russian character into the crew during the cold war was a bold statement about hope for the future. Meanwhile Japanese Americans were not exactly accepted in America either post ww2. George Takei, the actor playing sulu, was himself placed in an internment camp as a child for the crime of being Japanese American.
@mirror-images
@mirror-images 5 жыл бұрын
also, the show's producers were aware of Takei's sexuality before casting and went ahead with it. major.

There is some blooper in which Mr. Spock asks her to open frequencies (or the like) and she purrs back: "aye, aye, Mr. Spock, sugar." Everybody laughs. Leonard Nimoy was so in character that didn't even smile. 😁

I was inspired by Uhura and "the kiss" so much that I made a song imagining Uhura singing to Kirk. The song is entitled "Cosmic Space Machine (Uhura Sings)" featuring Zenobia Salik on vocals. You can listen at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gshjbJp8qODYZWQ.html
