Mississippi firefighter Patrick Hardison's life changed in 2001 when the roof of a burning house collapsed on him. For 14 years, he battled pain, stares and a loss of hope -- until he got a face transplant in August of 2015. Dr. Jon LaPook spoke with Hardison about how his life has changed since then.

Saving/ me Just say no to becoming a donor when you get your license or specifically tell your family that you want to keep external features intact(I've only been to open-casket funerals so it makes sense, you just gotta prepare with your family first if you still want to donate other organs). Life isn't built uppon only to appreciate the "small" things, usually everything could call themself "small things" - some things happen for a reason. A melted face objectivly is connected with a tragedy, it's not like people hate or don't like the person it's just the appearance that tells story. In that case, medicine did a good job there, healed a big mental dissorder. They sealed the deal.

This is so amazing - He legit looks like his former self, the donor and his children .Absolutely amazing . I can not stress how important it is for us to wake up every day and be thankful for what we have . That surgeon deserves the highest accolades - period !!! He is a rockstar ! I am a nurse and have watched this story step by step and let me tell you - many surgeons would not be as honest with patients as to tell them - "you may die, we may do worse than where you are starting from, we may not meet your expectations etc.." This is what you call ethics and morals in terms of medicine
