How long do facial transplants last?
They lost, on average, close to 20 percent of their volume within three years of the transplant, Pomahac said.
Is it possible to have a face transplant?
A face transplant is a challenging procedure. It's fairly new and very complex. Since the first face transplant in 2005, more than 40 people are known to have undergone the surgery, ranging in age from 19 to 60.
- Time-Stamp -

00:20 | Donor tissue harvesting
01:34 | Blood Vessels Division
02:08 | Recipient 's Face Preparation

What happens to the donor of a face transplant?
Generally, the donor is brain-dead but still has heart function. The face transplant recipient arrives at the hospital where the donor is being kept and prepares for the surgery. Any planned organ harvesting (including the face donation) is performed at the same time, and the face is preserved in a cold solution.
How long does it take to recover from a face transplant?
Face transplant patients should be prepared for extensive rehabilitation, which can last from four to six months. Some parts of rehabilitation may be required for life. The goal for rehabilitation is for the patient to regain function and movement so that he or she can participate confidently in daily activities.
How many face transplants have failed?
Nine face transplant patients have died, and two faces have been rejected, but there are few examples of long term, holistic follow-up.

Probably worth noting that facial replacement surgeries don't give you a 100% identical face to the donor's, as your skull structures are different. The face will change slightly.

well, they wouldn’t really look like them since the persons facial bones would be different, which has a lot to do with how someone looks. but i think for them to be willing to donate, they would see it as a good thing. not only is their loved one literally living on, they are doing so by greatly helping another person as well as helping to advance medicine. i would definitely be okay with my face being transplanted when i die. also, the donor has probably already elected to give their body to science if it is being used in a face transplant. anyways, this technology is amazing. incredibly that it’s even possible for it to be sucessful. sorry for the rant, hope you have a great day!
@jennifer9740
@jennifer9740 Жыл бұрын
It’s not exactly that per se! Although it’s a face transplant, the recipient’s face after the procedure likely looks nothing much like the donors face. Most people go through this procedure after a very traumatic accident like a gunshot to the face etc, so their very bone structure is also damaged. When doing a face transplant, at times the cartilage may also be transplanted, but not all. So while the recipient definitely has a much higher quality of life after the procedure, if you search up pictures online their faces do not look like a conventional persons face either. It might still be described by some as unusual since it’s very much affected by the bone structure underneath it… as bone structure determines a large part of how you look. That’s why this procedure is really for people whose features maybe melted off in a fire, have very severe deformities and inflammations etc. Not a copy and paste on the slightest !!

gotta love how 2:10 the recipient's face isn't even cut, it just comes clean off the recipient's face is fucked up for no reason whatsoever the surgeons don't give a shit about the contrast between his new and beautiful face and his horribly burned body
@ZSmith-yy4lv
@ZSmith-yy4lv Жыл бұрын
1. there’s obviously cutting involved, but it’s just connective tissue under the skin. It will come off without taking bone or muscle. 2. Burn victim 3. The face is the most important part of the body visually. The rest can be covered by clothes.
