According to the Maasai culture, having many wives and children is an indication of wealth. Young girls from as little as 15 years old are married off by their fathers.
In this episode, "Faces of Africa" follows the story of an 11 year old girl, Eunice Mitao, as she's being married off as a second wife to a young Maasai man.

i understand what your saying, i am a woman and i was a kid when i was 11, a child, but maybe, ...just maybe puberty works different there ? I mean i live in Europe and people here are fairly healthy until they are 60 years old, then they start becoming "old " so maybe puberty begins later here in my culture ? maybe life is just different for the Masaai, to call another culture wrong, when it has its own pace and curves, also doesnt seem right .... there shoulde be freedom and nature for evolution of culture also and maybe sometimes well meant moral from not the same place is also abit wrong, a power position. I admire the Masaai also.

My elder sister adopted a child from the Samburu community whose got brain damage because her biological mother (14yrs) couldn't handle pushing the baby during labour and as a result the child's brain got damaged. No one is against polygamy if the people involved consent but get wives that are old enough, what does an 11 yr old know about love or taking care of a home??

Honestly, aspects of the cultures should change like child marriage and FGM and bridal kidnappings, arranged marriages... however, the rest of it isn't so bad. I love the cheery nature of most Africans that I've seen in these documentaries and goodness, if I ever have the money to travel, I'm visiting Africa for sure because I want to meet these peoples and see their culture, join in their lifestyle for a time before coming home to America. I think it would be amazing to go to many parts of Africa. I want to see South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tanzania, maybe Zimbobwe, and I have no idea where else but dang, I would love to practicaly go from one end of Africa to the other. Maybe start in South Africa and go from there to wherever else?

I was small and watched a documentary on massai people half way. i don't even remember what I saw but I was so attracted by this community and these peoples. They're awesome and I want to meet them. growing up I had forgotten this childhood dream till I saw this video and I'm finally seeing beyond the colours. See there are practical reasons for getting many wives. Many wives many labourers both in form of these hardworking women folk and in the progeny they reproduce. Bloody groom talking about love is just finding labour. Father's love is important and yet father's giving away a baby just 11 year old . And then there's women who have completely internalised this system and their relegated position within the system. 11 years old. She is a baby. And apparently that 23 year old also doesn't seem too mature to me. I'm quite an immature person myself people tell me it's time to grow up. I just couldn't but now seeing this boy I have learnt this lesson with such force. You can't be a like a kid when you're old and in a power of position. You could ruin someone's life.

This is yet another example of the black woman giving more respect than she is recieving. Also as usual the men don't see the need to change this or even make sure there is running.water.and electricity in the house before worrying about getting a 2nd wife.

What has this to do with the tone of their skin ? If people in Africa would have been purple with pink dots would it have made a difference to what they are now ? Stop being so racist by mentioning skin colour, it has nothing to do with the situation on the ground.

As a KENYAN who has grown up here, with knowledge of the cultural variations but intellectually enabled, here is my perspective. 1. Polygamy is historical for us. Would I want to be a Co-wife? I do not know for now but no judgement to those who subscribe. 2. Child marriage is an issue that has been getting a lot of resistance lately from the government and other institutions. In truth, these girls are under age and suffer complications during child birth like fistula and even death. There are sanctuaries that have been set up in some parts of the country to school and house child brides who ran away or were rescued from early marriage and female circumcision (not featured in the docu- also illegal). The legal marital age is 18 years. But some of my people don't care much for legalities. If this docu would have been aired on our national broadcast, that groom and his entire clan, plus the local administration would have been arrested so fast, they wouldn't know what struck them. Also watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9ieoKV9p5O5iGg.html to see women of similar cultural influence but are trying to change the script but still holding on to some aspects of their culture. 3. The mean comments are very unnecessary. All of us cannot have the same origin and the same story so respect the different cultures, with it's strengths and weaknesses. Everyone is aaaaalllll about WAKANDA right now, this right here is the REAL Wakanda, UNSCRIPTED, UNEDITED and we are hella proud.

@@ilhanhassan9813 No it's not okay to have sex at age 9 in the West. The legal age for intercourse is usually around 16 years. Moreover, Western culture does not permit grown adults to marry children as the latter is considered incapable of informed consent. This is a typically savage tribal culture that needs to be civilised by Western efforts or by the efforts of other civilised folk.
