Did that Tara woman at 0:42 say she has 280,000 in debt for a degree in Chinese Medicine? What the hell is that? Who has such a degree? Mister mood There is no way for me to respond to this. P.S. I was not quite certain how to formulate my response, I was not trying to be condescending; I was actually rewriting it to avoid sounding horrid.

Tbh a big part of this is that people have to do their research and get degrees that will return the investment of money such as engineering, nursing, accounting, or computer science. There is no point in going to college and spending 10s of thousands of dollars on an arts degree because they are of very little economic value due to the fact that so many people have them and almost all employers are not looking for those specific skills.

well it depends on what type of art degree.. if you go to school for Fine Arts, Illustration, Painting, Art History, Comic Art, Sculpting, well than good luck because there are little to no jobs doing that plus they don't pay good, unless you're that 5% that's the best of the best to land a Hollywood type of job. I would say Graphic design, Web design/programming, interactive media, Interior design, Arcatech etc are all Safer Art degrees to get.

If student debt were forgiven it would cause a massive loss of confidence in the US government. It would send a signal to businesses and investors that the government is hopelessly corrupt and incompetent. It could even trigger the end of the US dollar as the world reserve currency. Simply forgiving the debt is an extremely bad idea. The way that it would likely be forgiven is that the Fed would create a trillion dollars and bail everyone out. This is a bad idea.

I think the key issues here that a lot of people are too focused on the type of degrees one gets are missing, is 1. The fact the money being put into student loan debt is money that's not being put back into the economy 2. The lack of an investment in creating a skilled workforce that would help us compete globally with other developed countries 3. The fact that many job markets are oversaturated - as seen by the example of the man who has a law degree and isn't using it. Even engineers are finding it difficult to find work. There are other things I could point out like the fact that many people (teachers, parents, ect.) tell their kids or students to "get a degree, it doesn't matter what you get it in, just get a degree", and so much more. It's not an individual at fault here, it's the misguidance from our culture and an economic problem that needs to be addressed. I personally couldn't care less what degrees these people have. What's important is that $1.2 trillion dollars are not going into the economy and the fact that job markets are oversaturated. These are the facts. Stop talking shit about things that aren't important, and look at the problem objectively and at large.

Whenever I watch these videos about student loan debt I see people who have made very poor choices. Whether it was a poor choice in major, private school over public, out of state over in ultimately you have to be accountable for your decisions. Do your research before mindlessly signing away on loans. I dont think student loans should be discharged with a bankruptcy. That will further open the floodgates of irresponsible borrowing and ultimately the taxpayers foot the bill. However there definitley needs to be changes to ease some of the burden. I know it will probably never happen but why not things like capping interest rates to like 3%. Or reward consistent payers with lower interest rates over the life of the loan. I know there are programs like loan forgiveness for public workers but do something across the board.

Never had to step foot on a campus, NO debt, no wasted time! It works for adults wanting to get their degree, high school students who want to earn a few credits to transfer in to their choice school or the way my son did it! I went to a state university having made a financial decision this was a school I could afford while working during my studies. I never borrowed a penny and graduated debt-free. My acquaintances scoffed at a state university education and instead went to expensive colleges, ending up with a load of debt. TBH, I am sick and tired of listening to people whining about their student loan debt. First of all, they lack basic math skills if they cannot calculate $50K x 4 years of loans, and they lack imagination, if they cannot envision what this means repayment-wise. Most of all, taking loans thinking university education guarantees anything in life is dull and irresponsible and it should not be excused. You make decisions in life and then suffer consequences of your decisions, period. When you take loans you are in debt, those loans don’t magically disappear

Huh? The financial aid office was so 'crisp' and 'cleanly' that you couldn't think of what you were doing? What do you want, a run down decrepit financial aid office? Maybe that would have been good - would have saved you from getting a useless fine arts degree

I'm sorry but so many people are in debt, so the hell is ashamed? This is crazy and unfortunate but why would people choose such a risky and redundant major when they're using LOANS?

I went to college(a state school) and had debt when I got out. Knowing I had this debt I worked 2 full time jobs each of them paying just above minimum wage. I did what ever I had to do to survive. My point is this...... If you make the decision to take on ANY debt YOU must find a way to get it off it. IT'S CALLED RESPONSIBILITY. I feel that this should be called "the bad decision crisis. YOU make the decision to take on a stupid major (communications, history, art, philosophy). YOU make the decision to go to university of Phoenix, devry, ITT. Shame in your parents for not educating you about money and responsibility. And shame on you for not thinking ahead as to how this debt would affect you later on. Banks, just like casinos are open for a reason and it's to make money.....

I mean, the problem is not much about the student debt. It is the interest. In my country the government controls the student loan, with only 1% interest per year.

Trades can't always land you a job afterwards either. Default if necessary, I mean it's not like you want another loan for a house or car.

I can't believe no one told that law school graduate, with the flamboyant pocket square, that you have to graduate at the top of your class from a top ten law school, in order to get a well paying job as an attorney. Poor guy is now probably doing commercial real estate, where there are tons of JDs, and that investors are often biased against those who wear flamboyant pocket squares.

Wooof. At 10% too most likely. That's $1,000 interest for every $10,000. Most of them seem close to $50,000 which is $5,000 a year interest payments. That's, what....... $420 a month just to maintain principal.

Found this link in an article written by someone who believes too many people are unecessarily going to college. "According to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, there are over 30 million jobs that pay an average of $55,000 a year and do not require a bachelor’s degree. The healthcare industry alone is creating millions of high-paying jobs that don’t require students to study for four years. Despite the benefits of vocational education, it has yet to appeal to American students on a broad scale..." www.cnbc.com/2017/09/15/why-california-is-investing-over-200-million-in-vocational-education.html
