My second visit to Utah presented some unique challenges, and gave me a different perspective as to what backpacking can be. Coyote Gulch is an absolutely wild place! One of the more difficult backpacking adventures I’ve ever taken. Miles of traversing frigid river water, steep sand stone obstacles, and so much more. SO grateful to have been able to spend this time with with my friend Devin (@Backcountryexposure). Be sure to watch his video from this trip as well!!

Me too! I just took it and my 30° together on an over night snow trip. They worked great together down in to the 20° s.

I’m glad to hear that! One of my main goals with this channel is to help break down barriers that may hold new hikers back. I tube it’s important to share the scary bits along side the triumphs.

Congratulations! Thank you for sharing as it brought back great memories of my time in Coyote Gulch and going through Crack in the Wall! I did in my seventies and while I still hike that hike is now off my list. Glad you made it safe and sound!😀👍

I love that you faced your fear! It isn't magic, like lots of movies portray it. Your fear doesn't just go away, but if you choose to do it again, it might be 5% easier. Thank you for sharing this.

It’s been my theme this year. Trying to chip away at them one at a time. I had a really bad accident on trail a few years back and it caused a bunch of new anxiety to manifest. Trying my best to wrk past them and stay on trail!

Your captures of such a glorious area reminds me of my time there on the Hayduke. The arch at your second site is so iconic! I didn’t get a good look at it in person when I was there because there were 15+ campers there & I didn’t want to bother them. I didn’t realize where I was, either. Guess I’ll have to go back one day ;)

There was large group on the other side of the arch when we were there, but we had our campsite all to ourselves.

Great video, Jim, yikes! That would make me nervous. I struggle with heights. Sometimes when Janet and I hike I just have to face the mountain. Beautiful terrain.

This video is one of your best! I really felt the fear, but also the exhilaration of overcoming that fear. It’s really authentic and you can tell that you and Devin had a wonderful time. Well done my friend. And Devin, I’m going to need to have one of those waymark hats! 😂

Thanks so much for sharing this adventure! Facing fears is no light matter! Your “beep”, “beep”, “beep” as you navigated that crack did make me smile though. Can you talk about why you couldn’t filter and drink the water? Also, did you have two pairs of shoes? Or just hike in the wet ones?

The water was too silty to filter. It would have clogged up the filters, and it’s such a popular area, the risk of human contamination was pretty high. I did carry camp shoes so my feet dry out.

Great video. I feel like it shows how most people would likely feel about facing some of these fears many people have. I just took a group of 19 people through there and they had to face these fears too. But they all made it through. There is an alternative to the slick rock slope by the river called the worm hole that goes though a triangular shaped hole in the boulders. The risk of injury is still there as you have to stair step you way down logs and 4-5ft boulders once inside but the risk of serious injury is very small compared to the higher rock slope. Although you would have to face the initial fear of tight places. Once you drop down the first triangular hole it’s not really tight anymore.

Adding Neoprene socks will make a huge difference with the cold water of the creek. Love my EE 20-degree quilt. Great Video.

Way to conquer your fears Jim! Have you thought about a pair of seal skinz (or cheaper knock off)? Wondering if it would've helped with all the water walking. How is it trying to stick to a trail? Was there a trail? Or did Devin just guide the way?

I haven’t really looked into anything like that because water walking is so rare in my adventuring. Maybe if I plan another trip like this I’ll give them a shot. There isn’t an established trail, but there were enough use and social trails that it was pretty clear were to go. And for most of it we were down in a wash, so there were only really two choices. Go forward or go back the way we came.
