Incredible moderate off-road Jeep trail to 13,186'. This was the first time I have been on Mosquito Pass. It was an interesting day wheeling with the Burro Races headed to the top of the pass. This is a cool trail worth running. It took me just about 2 hours to complete it. I started in Alma and headed over the pass down into Leadville. There are no real obstacles on this trail to speak of. It is bumpy but not terribly bad. No off-camber spots exist. The trail on the west side of the pass is most of a shelf road than the east side. Just make sure that you pay attention and keep your eye out for oncoming traffic. Thanks for watching!

Some people don't know the rules of the road! Vehicle going uphill has the right of way just like you pulled over on your way down. 👍

I know Earle. I assumed he had a spot picked out to pull over so I kept on going up. It’s kind of hard to hear in the video, but he still had some room between his passenger tire and the edge of the road. I could see that from where I was sitting. He then was saying that the edge of the road is soft (which it isn’t) and the funny part is his wife was yelling at him too. I was a little perturbed with this interaction and actually filmed myself ranting but didn’t put that in the video. I want to stay positive 👍🏻. Thanks for watching! - Geoff

During the summer of 1977 I lived in Alma. One day a group of us went to ski a snow field near the London mine, part way up the pass. While there, among the string of jeeps, down came a hippie in a VW bug. I also owned a VW, and I asked if he had crossed the pass. ""Oh yeah, and you can do it too' he said. So,, a couple of weeks later, I decided to try it myself . One of my old roommates from CSU, who lived in Leadville, invited me over to do a "hike" up La Plata Peak. I got up before sunrise and left my cabin, figuring that if I was going to have a chance of making it, I needed to do it without traffic. It was hell, but I made it to the top. What that VW lacked in power it gained with fairly high clearance and a short wheelbase. There were some pretty serious spots where the oil light would flicker, suggesting I was about to stall or blow the engine. But I kept going and I was fortunate to only meet one jeep coming down. Once on top, I stopped and let that engine cool for a good half hour while I hiked and enjoyed the view. From the pass I could see La Plata Peak with the morning sun on it. The Mosquito Range cast a long shadow down towards Leadville. On the way down the Leadville side, I encountered a lot of loose shale, and I was not sure I would have made it up from that side spinning wheels on some of that stuff (though obviously that hippie had done so). I was definitely worried about my brakes getting down. Anyway, I made it and met my friend for the climb. He, having grown up in Leadville, decided that the marked trail would be too easy, so we climbed the peak via Ellingwood Ridge. After about six hours to traverse 1.5 miles along that knife-edged ridge, and in a snow squall, we reached the top of La Plata Peak. The constant, near-death experience of Ellingwood Ridge erased the terror I had experienced driving my VW up Mosquito Pass. Your video refreshed my memory just a bit. If I don't sleep tonight, hopefully it will be because the Nuggets won the NBA championship, and not because of the re-emergence of repressed terror of driving up the pass, initiated by your video. Thanks for posting! God bless.

I just use the GoPro mount that has the 3M sticky tape on it and it’s on the top of my front windshield. Just make sure the windshield wipers won’t hit it if you put it there 🤣

I do agree with the rule that those going uphill have the right of way; however some discretion should be applied. If the one going downhill needs to reverse then who is going uphill? It's much easier to go uphill while driving forward. IMHO some give and take should always rule.
@Colorado4x4
@Colorado4x4 16 күн бұрын
It is always give and take, and I haven't had many problems with experienced off-roaders. Before I travel downhill, I always look for pull-outs and plan ahead in case if I run into oncoming traffic. Many times, I have been traveling uphill and see downhill traffic and I find a good pullout and wait for them to come down because I can see that they don't have a place to pull out, and they are always gracious and thank me for pulling out. There is no reason to create a train wreck if it can be avoided by anyone. When I am traveling uphill and downhill, I always take note of pull outs that I pass, so I have an idea of where I need to back up to in order to let traffic pass. Often times it is easier for a rig traveling uphill to find a pull-out and just wait for downhill traffic, but the general wheeling public understands that uphill traffic has the right of way and that is Colorado state law.

@@Colorado4x4 I totally agree, however the key word here is "experienced." I've found in my years the trails more enjoyable after the first wk in September after schools start. I like your attitude. I wish the trails were all marked by waypoints marking suitable pull overs so one might know which way to jump next. 🤔

I hear you. I plan to do more weekday wheeling this summer anyways. It is always better with less people! That is a great idea about marking pull-out waypoints! I never thought about that, but it would help people prepare more. That is fabulous. - Geoff

@@Colorado4x4 Yeah my father in law has a house in Silverthorn, and I have done a moderate amount of 4 wheeling in the area. One thing I would say is that the trails in general are quite bumpy, even if the trail is not particularly difficult. Given that, I was pretty impressed with how smooth your video was. I was thinking of doing Mosquito pass. Now that I have seen this video, I probably will, although I think I will start in Leadville.
@Colorado4x4

Heck yea. Yea, they have gotten way more bumpy over the years. The GoPro stabilization is really amazing. It is hard to believe that it doesn't have a mechanical gimble on it. I would start in Leadville as it will make the shelf road portion less intimidating as you are going uphill and will have the right of way. Enjoy it! - Geoff
