I had the extreme privilege of meeting the great Pearl Bailey. It was 1968 and I was ten years-old. My grandfather who was in show business introduced me to her and I was just thrilled! I knew who she was and imagine my joy in meeting this legendary actress and singer. She was so sweet and couldn’t have been nicer. Great memories. ❤

Can't think of any other performer who radiated such a feeling of sweetness and warmth.

My partner saw Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway on Broadway in Hello Dolly. We’re both theater snobs and have seen a lot of plays. He still says this is the best show he’s ever seen.

I met Pearl Bailey in a May Company department store when I worked there in the 1970s. She was talking to a girlfriend on their way out of the beauty shop on the second floor. Not wishing to interrupt her, I just gave her a small wave, and she did the same, still talking with her friend. So glad I didn't act the pushy guy.

I’m heartbroken and sorry that this great, talented lovely lady and the loves of her life ended more or less when she did. A legend never dies but continues with each new generation that are lucky enough to find her star.

A true legend with the most beautiful smile and countenance. Her inner light brightened the lives of many including many military personnel when she was part of the USO.. Her eyes even twinkled when she smiled.

A beautiful voice her, Etta James, and Ella Fitzgerald really put such feeling and emotion into what they sing and they always sound just as good live as they do recorded.

Hard start to her life that didn't discourage her , cause her to stumble in reaching her goals or make her embittered. Good also to hear that she didn't succumb to drug or alcohol addiction like so many entertainers and movie stars do. Had a happier and better life once she found the right partner. She was an icon and a good example of a well-grounded, healthy outlook personality.

Pearl was absolutely BEAUTIFUL --- especially during her 'youth'. Absolute STUNNER of a woman.

We are so proud of our Newport News native Mrs Pearl Bailey we have a wonderful Library in her name and we also have the pleasure of being the birth place of Mrs Ella Fitzgerald and Allen Iverson and Aaron Brooks and Michael Vick.

Pearl Bailey, her first name says, she was definitely a black pearl very unique and precious. She definitely had one hell of a life and I am so happy that things worked out well for her and she found happiness in the end. She was a very strong black woman the circumstances she had gone through would be enough to crush anyone's dreams and spirit. I had the good fortune to see her perform "Hello Dolly" live on stage in Boston. She was phenomenal. During her performance, she spotted a Jewish family sitting in a box off to the side of the stage. Because of the age of the young boy with them, she correctly guessed he was celebrating his bar mitzvah. She asked him if he wanted to come onstage and do a number with "Ol' Pearl." Grinning from ear to ear, he nodded Yes. He was escorted down onto the stage with her, and they did a soft shoe routine, while his family members had their cameras clicking away. Then he got to make a bow to the audience which was cheering and clapping madly. There was a baseball game going on in Boston that Saturday, and there were men in the audience who had their transistor radios up to their ears, but kept their eyes on Pearl's performance. The impression was that their wives had probably dragged them to the performance and they were trying to comply while keeping their attention on the game simultaneously. Pearl was at the top of a stage staircase and descended singing the show's title song. But when she got to the bottom of the staircase, she signaled to the orchestra in the pit below to stop playing. She turned to the audience and said, "I might as well put you out of your misery. The score is (whatever it was between the Boston Red Sox and whomever they were playing)... All bases are loaded. Let's bring the Sox onto home plate." The audience SCREAMED with delight, stamping their feet and clapping. She showed them that she was aware of the importance of the game to the men, and they LOVED her giving them her attention. Then she said, "Now I am going to go back up the staircase and start all over again." She walked back up the long staircase and re-started singing "Hello Dolly" song, descending the staircase with their FULL attention this time. The audience was still screaming with delight and clapping. This was a genius move on her part. There she had been standing at the top of the stars making her grand entrance, and men were leaning forward in their seats with radios up against their ears. Their attention was OBVIOUSLY divided. She wasn't going to have a PARTIALLY-attentive audience, so she took the time to acknowledge their dilemma and gain an even MORE rousing response to her singing the title song. She was using the song as a way to pay tribute to the Red Sox, so the audience's fervor was their way of cheering for BOTH their home team and PEARL. Brilliant move. I don't remember who won the ball game though, and I didn't care. Pearl was pure magic, though.

I saw this amazing beautiful singer on TV and fell in love. I had such a crush on Pearl Bailey that anything she was in I watched. I loved and adore her smile. She was gorgeous and I was thrown by her voice. May she continue to rest in peace.

I had the honor and privilege to meet Ms. Bailey face to face. Talked and received great words of wisdom from Ms. Bailey. She loved the Lord and raised her children in the Lord as well. I have in my possession her signature in my pocket Bible. She wrote to seal the Godly wisdom she took to share with me that day. She was my mom's favorite singer. Mom said she sang from the heart. She took my grandmother and me to see Pearl perform at some fancy club in Los Angeles. Wish I would have asked mom where it was when I got older but didn't think of it. She died a long time ago. It had to have been a dinner and then the show because I remember all the people sat at tables with white tablecloths. I was a little girl and was fascinated with her fancy cocktail dress that changed colors to pinks and oranges from the stage lights. Then, my mom managed to take us backstage to meet her. Pearl was in a pretty robe. Was in the early/mid 60's. Have any of you seen the movie 'That Certain Feeling' with Bob Hope and Eva Marie Saint? Well, the real stars of the movie are Pearl Bailey and Jerry Mathers from Leave It To Beaver. Pearl plays a maid but is actually an operations manager. She wears THE most glamorous maid dress that's more like a cocktail dress, and she wears high heels to go with her beautiful dress. She is sexy, sophisticated and sings the song 'Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart' which is a very special part of the movie. It's a fun movie and it's Miss Bailey at her very finest. It's a must-see.

I worked in a Russian gift shop at the 1967 World’s Fair in Montreal. Pear Bailey came into the shop and created quite the stir! She was flamboyant and larger than life, at least to my teenage eyes. Couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family about it.

Pearl Bailey was born in Newport News, Virginia, not Newport, Virginia. I am from West Virginia, but I lived in Newport News for a while and worked for Denbigh Animal Hospital.

I'm surprised that they didn't know she had congestive heart failure in 1990 before she had her knee surgery.

What a beautiful brightly lovely star 🌟 I'm so happy to know her story now. It's very unfortunate that she died after a common surgery, in today's world she would have recovered at a rehab where her vitals would have been monitored. It sounds like she had heart and possibly blood pressure issues. The passing of her entire family is very sad, and surprising especially her children who would be young enough to be alive today.

I grew up with Tony & Deedee. Louie would take us to school functions (elementary) and to fairs. Tony & I were best friends thru high school.

This story is so interesting. I am a white man married to a black woman for the past 35 years. And I heard the Ellington band with Louis Bellson perform his sacre suite at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s

I met both Pearl Bailey, and Louie Bellson in either 1980 or 81, Louie was very approachable Bailey not so much, but now that I have learned about her struggles in life, I can't blame her.

Whenever pearl baily was on a show I would be in front of the tv with my mother, I loved watching her sing, dance , and her humorous attitude, along with her beauty. It was sad too hear of her passing.

I can no longer find it on KZfaq, but she and Johnny Carson did a number together on The Tonight Show, probably in the 60s, and she was absolutely hilarious! I believe it was, "Our Love Is Here to Stay". His reactions were funny, too. She acted like she was going to run and jump into his arms at one point. 😂 What a dame!!! ❤

She debuted on stage with her brother "William" ... the "Bill Bailey" of that famous song?

Pearl recorded a gospel music album with her father's church choir. A friend had a copy of it in Ohio. Since her original father was not around after her childhood, I'm not sure which father had a church choir. I have been looking for this LP but there is no mention of it anywhere. It may have been a private pressing or on a small regional label. She used to live in Orlando, Florida and she was on a book tour in Atlanta, but I talked with her about other things. She was also promoting her three cookbooks and lived in Arizona. At one time she did some work with the United Nations. Everyone that knew her spoke highly of her. When she was in Chicago she would attend First Church of Deliverance and also a Christian Science church. Articles in Ebony magazine confirm this. Sad her two kids died young. There'll never be another Pearlie Mae! (:

I purchased Tony Bellson's house. Tony was Louie's brother. They were both drummers. Pearl and Louie came here many times and the brothers would jam in the living room.

Back in the 1970s on a beautiful spring evening, I saw Pearl and Louie Bellson strolling down the street in New York City arm in arm . It was obvious that they were deeply in love from the way they looked into each others eyes, and as they held on to one another. That night, they were the most gorgeous couple on the Upper Eastside.

I has the pleasure of meeting her as a teen . Her sister lived in my neneighborhood and she pulled up.in a limo and asked me for directions . My friend gopoed in and took them to the house . Ahe was lovely and gracious . And she was visiting her sister to meet a schoolmate of mine , Lydia Jackson . Lydia went on to be an opera singer , with Pearl as a mentor .
